<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>

FOLDING RADAR REFLECTOR
Priority of the patent application filed in France on
SEPTEMBER 22, 1975 under the n [deg.] 75 28907 and of the certificate of addition deposited in France on March 31, 1976 under the n [deg.] 76 09275, in the name
by JOUANNO René-Jean.
The present invention relates to a radar reflector intended to serve as a target within the framework of meteorological surveys.
These devices are made up of a juxtaposition of similar tetrahedra. Each tetrahedron comprises three equal faces, in the form of an isosceles right triangle, orthogonal to each other and made of a reflective material. The fourth face, or base, is not materialized.
This juxtaposition of tetrahedra constitutes a volume whose central point is occupied by the set of vertices of all the tetrahedra; the latter having two by two a common face.
In the current state of the art, these reflectors can be classified into two categories:
- those which are delivered in spare parts and assembled as and when required by the user. This tedious assembly must be carried out near the place of the launch and in good installation conditions; it is impossible to do in the dark or in strong winds.
- those which, already assembled during manufacture, have been stored, folded and only have to be deployed and locked to be able to be used.
They take the general shape of an umbrella.
The complexity of the systems currently on the market is such that the weight and the price of these devices are too high and that, despite their undeniable advantages, their use is currently reserved for special cases.
The reflector, object of the present invention, is of the "umbrella" type; its originality lies in its airfoil and in the design of a light, fully foldable frame, which makes the ridges coming from the apex common to all the tetrahedra formed by the reflecting elements rigid, said reinforcement stiffening said airfoil.
More precisely, the folding radar reflector forming the subject of the present invention, of the type consisting of eight rectangular tetrahedra adjacent to each other and having a common vertex, the bases of said tetrahedra not being materialized and forming a regular octahedron the center of which is said common vertex, is notably remarkable in that it comprises a blade formed before assembly of three squares of flexible and reflective material, cut along a half-diagonal, that is to say along a line joining the center of the square at one of the corners of said square, and assembled to each other at said half-diagonals so as to form a spiral, said wing being kept taut after deployment of said reflector by a rigid frame.
According to one characteristic of the invention, said frame is integral with a central nut forming a joint.
According to another characteristic of the invention, said frame is formed by six pairs of rods articulated on the central nut, parallel when the reflector is folded up and orthogonal two by two when the reflector is deployed.
In one embodiment, a package protects the folded reflector and keeps it in a minimum of space; in this case, the opening of the reflector is controlled by traction on an opening ring which causes the tearing of the protective sheath and allows the reflector to open out.
With this particular device, the commissioning of the reflector requires - between the moment when it is still packed and the moment when it can be released - only a very short time; moreover, this operation can be carried out in all conditions.
Other advantages and characteristics will emerge better on reading the description which will follow, given with reference to the figures given by way of indication and in no way limiting, among which:
- Figure 1 schematically shows the frame of the reflector with a first type of central nut,
- Figure 2 illustrates an example of winding of the airfoil around the frame of Figure 1, - Figure 3 is a detail of Figure 2,
- Figure 4 shows one of the three squares constituting the airfoil,
- Figure 5 is a sectional view along the line A-A of Figure 4 when the three squares are assembled according to the present invention.
- Figure 6 shows a detail of the deployed reflector.
- Figure 7 illustrates the reflector partially deployed.
- figure 8 shows the reflector fully deployed,
- Figures 9 and 10 relate to another method of mounting the airfoil,
- Figure 11 illustrates another type of central nut that can be used,
- Figure 12 shows the nut of Figure 11, in the position it has when the reflector is deployed, and
- figure 13 shows the reflector, fitted with the nut of figures 11 and
12, partially deployed.
In FIG. 1 devoted to the frame, the central nut 1 receives the six branches of the frame: each of these branches consists of two adjoining rods. In the position of use of the reflector, all these branches are orthogonal, while in the folded position, they are grouped and substantially parallel to the upper branch consisting of the rods 6
and 6 '.
In the presently described embodiment, this upper branch is fixed, while the four horizontal branches, respectively constituted by the rods 2 and 2 ', 3 and 3', 4 and 4 ', 5 and 5' are articulated on the nut 1 and can describe upwards an arc of a circle substantially equal to 90 [deg.] intended to put them parallel to the upper branch, that is to say to the rods 6 and 6 '. As for the lower branch, each of the two rods 7 and 7 'constituting it describes an arc of a circle close to 180 [deg.], Which allows it to come and join the other rods already bent. In FIG. 1, we see in dotted position 7 "occupied by branch 7 '; once folded.
In the embodiment chosen for example, the fixed rods
<EMI ID = 1.1>
and 8 'intended to suspend the reflector.
Likewise, the rods 7 and 7 ', in their lower part, are machined in the form of hooks 9 and 9'. These hooks are locked using
<EMI ID = 2.1>
any other way.
Whether these hooks are directed towards the center (fig. 1) or outwards (fig. 8) does not change this type of locking.
Before describing the preparation of the canopy, it is essential to
<EMI ID = 3.1>
numbered arrows on the ribbon showing the canopy, one of the many possible routes. We see that the canopy can wrap around the rods by bending every quarter of turns at 90 [deg.] Without ever going back to the same place. Figure 3 shows in detail this winding around each
stems constituting one of the branches.
The canopy (fig. 4) is made from three squares of flexible reflective surface strictly superimposed in all their elements, each with 13 each, in which it is possible, if it is deemed useful, to provide holes 14 intended for:
1 [deg.]) - to facilitate the markings during assembly, 2 [deg.]) - to allow the passage of a ring 15 (fig. 6) which secures the two
stems from the same branch (except for the lower stems 7 and 7 ').
<EMI ID = 4.1>
born at the passage of the nut 1; during assembly, the rods of the reinforcement will be lodged in the half-diagonals 17 - 18 - 19 and 20. The half-diagonals 20 have the particularity that they are split and assembled in pairs. spiral (fig. 5) around an axis formed by the superposition of the centers of the three squares. Said spiral can also be obtained by cutting said squares, not only half a diagonal, but along a line, straight or not, joining the center of each square to one of its edges.
Each square mounted separately can also be used in another mode of construction, but it is necessary to make the three joints when mounting on the frame. It is also possible to use twelve isosceles right triangles each representing a quarter of one of the three squares, but then it is necessary to ensure the assembly in all the diagonals on each of the twelve rods.
Likewise, without departing from the scope of the invention, it may prove to be advantageous to reinforce the corners of the squares of the airfoil to cover the end of the horizontal rods, for example, and to reinforce the central hole possibly by leaving this reinforcement of the guides serving to facilitate the installation of the rods.
Figure 7 shows the reflector being deployed; it is only by making the hooks 9 and 9 'coincide by a pressure Pl towards P2
(the angle being reduced to 0 [deg.]), that the canopy will take its perfect and taut shape. The locking of these two hooks is done by introducing the ring
As shown in Figure 1. Figure 8 illustrates the reflector fully extended and tensioned; for simplification of the drawing, the holes 14, as well as the articulation of the rods in the nut 1, have not been shown in FIG. 8.
A variant of the assembly of the airfoil appears in FIGS. 9 and 10, using a frame with branches each comprising only one rod 21; the blade in this case must be notched in the manner of a hinge on each of its diagonals.
Other variations are also possible in the reflector; this is how at the level of the central nut where the various branches are articulated, it is preferable to use rather than the nut 1 made up of rigid parts, the nut which will now be described and which, thanks to a shape particular, allows by bending in certain places, to pass from
the folded form to the unfolded form, without using rigid pivot pins.
According to Figure 11, the nut 22 consists of a veil in the form of a cross; on the top, it has in its center a block 23 pierced with a pair of vertical blind holes, intended to receive the upper vertical rods. In the example chosen, this block is crossed by two small holes, also vertical 24 for the passage of the rope 25. Adjacent to the square base of this central block 23 and connected to it by the veil forming a hinge 26 are four other blocks 27 each comprising a pair of blind holes intended to receive the rods of the horizontal branches of the frame, after folding at 90 [deg.] of each portion of the veil connecting it to the central block 23.
On either side of one of the branches of the cross are sitvés two half-blocks 28 connected to it by the veil forming a hinge 29; these half-blocks 28, each provided with its rod, after rotation of 180 [deg.], constitute the lower vertical branch; under the central block 23 is a cubic stop 30 intended to limit to 90 [deg.] the folding of the web connecting the blocks 27 to the central block 23 which remains fixed.
On the rope 25 slide, symmetrically to the nut 22, two double end pieces 31 and 32 therefore each comprising two blind holes intended to secure the vertical rods: the upper end piece 31 is delivered mounted on the end of the upper vertical rods; the lower end piece 32 is put in place by the user.
On the upper end of the rope is fixed, in this embodiment, a triangular eye 33 intended for the suspension of the reflector; on the lower end of this same rope 25 is fixed a ring 34 for commissioning the reflector. It is also used to hang the radio-probe under the reflector.
FIG. 12 shows the nut 22 deformed, as it appears when the reflector is fully deployed, thus presenting six pairs of orthogonal holes. Figure 13 shows the apparatus deployed, but not yet tensioned; it is by making the two dihedrons of the lower wing, materialized by the rods 35 and 36 touch, that the entire reflector is stretched; the user brings together the lower rods 35 and 36 using the double end piece 32 by sliding it up and down on the rope 25: the reflector is then ready to be used.
According to a particular embodiment, the folded reflector is delivered in a sheath, made of plastic for example, easily tearable, thanks to the ropes 11 or 25 by pulling on the loops 10 and 34.
