<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>

Method and device for sealing the hole
casting of a metallurgical vessel.
The present invention, due to Mr. H.
JACOBS, relates to a process and a device for
close the tap hole of a metallurgical vessel. This
process is particularly interesting in the case of
tap hole of a distributor basket for the continuous casting of a liquid metal, for example steel.
We know that the casting continues in the mold
is usually done through a shopping cart
distributor which receives the liquid metal from a receptacle such
as for example a steel mill pocket. The bottom of this distributor basket usually contains several nozzles, generally vertical, which must be closed to allow the basket to be filled and then released to start casting.
Apart from the plug which is used for the continuous casting of large gauge products, several different methods are used to seal these nozzles, but they all present, during unblocking, one or the other significant drawback which leaves the problem uncluttered. satisfactory solution.
These methods generally include the following operations: first the outer orifice of the nozzle is plugged by means of an asbestos bead and then the duct of the nozzle and its funnel are filled with a powdery material , such as for example silica, chromium, etc ... To release a tap hole thus sealed, the asbestos bead is extracted by pulling on its end which has been taken care to let protrude for this purpose and the filling material is discharged by gravity.
A major drawback presented by these methods results on the one hand from the fact that the transmission of heat to the nozzle is not well ensured and from the fact that, on the other hand, during unblocking, the pulverulent material is slowly evacuated. . These conditions therefore only allow relatively slow penetration of the steel into the nozzle which is at a temperature markedly lower than that of the liquid metal, despite the preheating of the basket. Under the action of such cooling, the metal can congeal and obstruct the passage. The unblocking of this nozzle can then only be done with an oxygen torch, which often leads to the deterioration of the nozzle to the point of rendering it unusable with the consequence of putting the casting line out of service and a costly loss of production.
These methods cannot, moreover, be used with baskets of the tilting type, that is to say their field of application is limited.
The object of the present invention is a method making it possible to remedy these drawbacks.
This method consists in using a stopper comprising a longitudinal body, each end of which is provided with a shoulder. One of these shoulders acts as a stopper head and takes place inside the container, while the other shoulder takes place outside the container and secures the stopper.
The method, object of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that one introduces a plug, preferably rigid, in the tap hole, in that one ensures the tightness of the closure by pressing the head. of the stopper on the inner wall of the container where the tap hole begins, this wall possibly being the inlet funnel of the tap hole, in that it is heated
both the inner wall of the tap hole and the wall in contact with the head of the plug by transmitting heat from the plug to said walls and in that the tap hole is released at the desired time, by separating the internal part the cap of the outer shoulder which holds it in place and by imparting to said inner part a movement from the outside to the inside of the container.
In the most frequent case of a tap hole with a vertical longitudinal axis, the movement of the internal part of the stopper from the outside to the inside of the container, that is, from the bottom to the top, is created. and advantageously accelerated, using a plug with a density lower than that of the liquid metal, this difference in density causing the internal part of the plug to rise rapidly in the liquid metal.
According to the invention, the head of the stopper is pressed on the inner wall of the container where the taphole begins, by exerting a traction on the part of the stopper which passes through the duct of the taphole, this part extending to take support on the outer wall of the container where the taphole ends.
The heat which is transmitted from the stopper to the inner wall of the taphole and to the wall in contact with the head of the stopper comes not only from the liquid metal, but also from the container which has been taken care to preheat.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the internal wall of the taphole and the wall in contact with the head of the stopper are heated, by transmitting additional heat created within the stopper, for example by using the stopper as electrical resistance.
The transmission of heat from the plug to the inner wall of the taphole and to the wall in contact with the head of the plug can be effected by radiation and / or conduction and / or convection.
Still according to the invention, the internal part of the plug is separated from the external shoulder which holds it in place, by breaking this external part under the action of a shock of sufficient force.
Thanks to this process, the penetration of the liquid metal into the tap hole during unblocking is significantly faster than usual and the temperature difference between the metal to be cast and the inner wall of the tap hole is less important, which virtually eliminates the danger of clogging by solidifying the metal in the taphole.
A subject of the present invention is also a device for implementing the method described above.
The device, object of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that it has the form of a plug, preferably rigid, composed of a longitudinal body intended to occupy the duct of the taphole, and two shoulders of diameter greater than that of
<EMI ID = 1.1>
one of these shoulders acting as a head and being intended to come into contact with the inner wall of the receptacle where the tap hole begins, the other being intended
to come into contact with the outer wall of the container
where the taphole ends, at least one of these shoulders bearing an internal screw thread in order to be able to move on the corresponding threaded end of the longitudinal body.
According to the invention, the face of the head of the stopper intended to come into contact with the interior wall of the container where the tap hole begins, this wall possibly being the inlet funnel of the tap hole, is machined to that the two surfaces thus brought together match each other as perfectly as possible and ensure a tight sealing of the taphole.
Also according to the invention, the diameter of the longitudinal body is advantageously less than the internal diameter of the tap hole, to facilitate the introduction of the stopper and especially its rapid extraction at the time of casting.
The whole of the head and of the longitudinal body of the stopper is advantageously lighter than the metal to be cast, to facilitate its rapid ascent into the metal bath.
It is also advantageous that the set of
the head and the longitudinal body of the plug is a better conductor of heat than the refractory surrounding the
<EMI ID = 2.1> from the plug to the inner wall of the taphole and to the wall in contact with the head of the plug.
The whole of the head and of the longitudinal body of the stopper is advantageously constructed of graphite.
In order to facilitate machining and reduce material loss, the stopper is advantageously composed of three distinct parts, the two shoulders bearing an internal screw thread to be able to move on the corresponding threaded ends of the longitudinal body. .
According to one embodiment of the device according to the invention, the stopper comprises a cylindrical longitudinal body and a cylindrical-conical head, the other shoulder having the shape of a threaded ring.
The appended figure is given by way of non-limiting example, in order to make the subject of the present invention clearly understood.
The distributor basket consisting of its metal frame (1) and its refractory lining (2) contains in its bottom a continuous casting nozzle (3) having a funnel (4) and a cylindrical vertical duct (5).
According to the present invention, in order to allow the basket to be filled, the nozzle (3) is closed by means of a rigid graphite plug comprising a cylindrical longitudinal body (6) whose two ends are threaded. At one of these ends is screwed a head
<EMI ID = 3.1>
at the other end is screwed a ring (8) intended to bear on the outer wall (9) of the nozzle (3) in order to press the head (7) on the funnel (4). The surface of the cap head intended to be in contact with the funnel
(4) is machined so that this contact is perfectly sealed.
The good thermal conductivity of the graphite of which the plug is made allows good transmission of heat to the walls of the nozzle, the temperature of which is thus close to that of the liquid metal.
To unblock the nozzle, the end of the stopper provided with the ring (8) is broken: therefore, the head (7) and the rest of the longitudinal body (6) are released, which quickly rise into the metal bath due to their lower density. The passage through the nozzle is thus quickly cleared. The liquid metal can then quickly enter the pouring nozzle, the inner wall of which is hot enough to prevent the metal from freezing as it passes.
