Polymaleic anhydride (I) is prepd by polymerising maleic anhydride in xylene as solvent, in the presence of di-t-butyl peroxide as polymsn-catalyst, the ortho isomer content of the xylene being 99% esp. 1-25%. (I) controls boiler scale, is a corrosion inhibitor for metal surfaces a and an additives for polymer systems.
