Abstract
A cell submerged by electrolyte, has a longitudinal channel parallel to flow of mercury and electrolyte, above the surface, to collect evolved gases, and prevent turbulent effects due to flow of gas along cell. Pref. the channel is at one side of cell, and comprises a flexible gas tight envelope of elastomer, permitting adjustment of cathode/anode gap, and accommodating pressure effects due to short-circuiting. The cell cover is pref. sloped to channel, and may be bolted between bus-bar and distributors at opposed wedge shaped transverse sections. The anode is perforated to allow gas flow, and the distributors may have orifices to permit electrolyte flow. The cell is esp. for production of halogens, e.g. Cl from brine.
