CORDON, Stabilization of synthetic high Polymers, Israel Program for ScientJfic Translations, jerusalem, 1964, p. 131).
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Stabilized compost based on 221yolefins
The present invention relates to stabilized compositions based on polyolefins and containing carbon black as filler.
It is known that articles manufactured with compositions based on polyolefins are sensitive to sunlight. In fact, the ultraviolet part of solar radiation induces oxidation reactions by oxygen in the air which degrade the polymer. For many applications, it is possible to incorporate carbon black into the polyolefin which, thanks to the eoran which it forms, protects the products.

finished against ultraviolet radiation. In addition, carbon black exerts an effect. inhibitor on the oxidation reaction of polyolefin (G.Y. CORDON, Stabilization of synthetic high Polymers, Israel Program for ScientJfic Translations, Jerusalem, 1964, p. 131).
In addition, polyolefins can also be degraded by oxidation due to an increase in temperature. This temperature rise occurs singularly during the processing of the resin but may result, in electrical applications in particular., From normal use. Carbon black added to polyolefins to protect them from ultraviolet rays also exerts a protective action against thermal oxidation (ibid. P. 127). Carbon black is, however, only a moderately active antioxidant and the protection it confers is often insufficient.
Polyolefins in which carbon black cannot be incorporated are normally stabilized against thermal oxidation using a variety of compounds, including amino compounds and alkylphenols (ibid. P. 126). Attempts have been made to increase the resistance to thermal oxidation of polyolefins to which carbon black is incorporated by adding these same compounds to them. In most cases these have been found to be incompatible with carbon black. Their addition leads to a decrease in resistance to thermal oxidation (Journal of appl. Pol. Sci., 1959, 1, p. 37 to 42). Only phenolic antioxidant agents containing S in their molecule have so far been shown to be compatible with carbon black and capable of improving the protection conferred by the latter (Journal of appl. Pol.
Sci., 1959, 1, p. 43 to 49).
It has now been found that certain phenolic antioxidant agents not containing S in their molecule are compatible with the black of

carbon and improve the protection given by the latter.
The invention relates to stabilized polyolefin-based compositions containing carbon black and compounds of general formula:
EMI4.1
where R1 to R2 are alkyl groups, where A is straight or branched chain alkylene, where m is 0 or 1, where R is straight or branched alkyl and where n is an integer between 1 and 4.
Preference is given to using phenolic compounds as defined above, where R1 and R2 are alkyl groups comprising from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
Among others, particularly suitable phenolic compounds are those where R1 and R2 are tert.butyl groups, where A is an ethylene group and where m is 1. As examples of these compounds, there is
EMI4.2
there may be mentioned the esters of 3.5 ditert.butyl-4-hydroxyhydrooinnamlque acid and in particular 3,5 clitert.butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamate, octadecyl.
Among the polyolefins used in the compositions in accordance with the invention, there are polymers and copolymers containing ethyl.
EMI4.3
One, propylene, butene 1, 3 met3lpentene 1 and 4 methlipeutene 1. Mixtures containing these polyolefins are also suitable.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In addition to stabilizers in accordance with the invention, other additives can be added to the composition: mineral fillers, plasticizers, antistatic agents, lubricants, other antioxidants compatible with carbon black, etc.
The amount of carbon black to be incorporated into the composition to protect it against the oxidation induced by ultraviolet rays is of the order of 0.5 to 5% by weight based on the polymer.
The concentration of phenolic compound in accordance with the invention can vary between 0.001 and 5% by weight based on the polymer. In general, a concentration between 0.001 and 1% is sufficient. For compositions based on polyethylene, a concentration of between 0.01 and 0.1% is particularly suitable.
This stabilizer can be incorporated into a polymer according to any known methods. The polymer in powder or grains can for example be impregnated with a solution of the stabilizing compound. This impregnation can be carried out either in a mixer or a mill where the solvent is evaporated, or by mixing on heated rolls or by extrusion of a mixture of the polymer and the stabilizer.
The effectiveness of the stabilizer is examined by subjecting samples of stabilized composition to accelerated aging tests in which these samples are subjected to the action of heat. At regular time intervals, a significant mechanical property is measured, the evolution of which is thus recorded over time.
In the examples which follow, various compositions based on polyethylene manufactured according to a low pressure process are studied. It is not a polyethylene of commercial type, Eltex 54 001 of melt index 0.1 and specific weight of 0.95, manufactured by the applicant.

The carbon black used is Spheron 9 sold by Cabot Corp.
Calcium stearate which serves as a lubricant is also incorporated into the composition. The phenolic compound used is
EMI6.1
3 # 5 ditert.outyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinn & ootadecyl mte.
The various constituents of. composition are kneaded in an extruder and extruded in the form of ribbons in which test pieces intended for tensile tests are cut.
The samples are placed in an oven at 110 C where they are subjected to the action of air. From five in five days, 5 test pieces are taken which are subjected to a tensile impact test according to DIN 53 448 B. The resistance to oxidation of the various compositions studied is assessed by the time after which the resistance. to the shock in traction becomes less than half of its initial value.
The results of these tests show that the addition of
EMI6.2
3,5 ditert.butyl 4 octadecyl hydroxyhyàroainnamate not only does not in any way reduce the resistance to oxidation of the polyethylene charged with carbon black, but on the contrary considerably reinforces this resistance.
The tests which follow are given by way of example and in no way limit the invention.
