<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
A l'heure actuelle,

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Method and device for the rapid dosage of elements present in metals and alloys.
The present invention relates to a method and to a device for the rapid dosage of elements present in metals and alloys, more especially in liquid steel.
Among the elements capable of being measured by this procedure, mention may be made of oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen on the one hand, and carbon and sulfur on the other hand. In general, this process is applicable to all the elements liable to be released at high temperature in gaseous form (combined or not combined),
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Although in the text which follows, it will mainly be a question of liquid metals and alloys, it must be understood that the method and the analysis device which formed the subject of the present invention are also applicable to metals and solid alloys with a small modification which will be specified in the course of the text *
At present,
the determination according to conventional methods of these elements contained in liquid metals and alloys requires a series of consecutive operations: 1. taking a certain quantity of liquid metal (sampling), 2. solidifying and cooling this sample raw, 3.sending the sample to the laboratory, 4, machining one or more small samples (or even chips) from the raw sample, 5, extracting the gases contained in these samples or forming compounds gas from the elements present, 6, analysis of these extracted gases.
In general, the aforementioned operations do not pose significant problems but require a fairly significant time.
In addition, certain phases of the process such as. solidification are likely to give rise to chemical changes that affect the accuracy of subsequent assays. Finally) the problem of the representativeness of the samples submitted for analysis vis-à-vis all the metal sampled must be studied in particular in depth, in particular for the determination of oxygen.

According to another operating mode of the invention, the sample contained in the crucible is maintained under reducing melting conditions, if it is desired to know the oxygen (On) and / or hydrogen (H2) and / or nitrogen contents. (N2) of said liquid sample.
The conditions of reducing melting of the sample to be analyzed are advantageously carried out using a graphite crucible, the carbon of said crucible being intended to dissolve to saturation in said liquid metal and while maintaining in the chamber containing this. crucible an inert atmosphere, for example argon or helium, constantly renewed to ensure the release and evacuation of the gases given off from the liquid sample.
If we want to know the carbon (c) and sulfur (S) contents of the metal or alloy, the sample contained in the crucible is kept under oxidizing fusion conditions.
The conditions for oxidizing melting of the sample to be analyzed are advantageously carried out by using a crucible made of refractory material free of carbon and / or sulfur and by blowing an oxidizing gas, preferably oxygen, into the chamber.
When working under oxidative melting conditions it may be advantageous to ensure the tightness of the enclosure containing the crucible $ by using either the same gas for the formation of the two gas layers, in this case. oxygen, or two different gases, one an inert gas, preferably argon for the formation of the upper gas layer, the other 1-oxygen for the formation of the lower gas layer.

A subject of the present invention is also a device enabling the implementation of the method described above.
According to the diagram given in the appendix, such a device is essentially characterized in that it comprises a sealing part (1) and a metal enclosure (8), said part of etanoheity (1) being intended for 1 allow the sample to be introduced into the enclosure (8) while preventing any entry of air and any exit of gas, the metal enclosure (8) preferably having double walls between which a circulation of 'water by means of the inlet and outlet pipes (21), (22), (23) and (24), said enclosure (8) further comprising a device (9 - 10 - 11) in crucible shape intended on the one hand (9)

in the circuit of which is interposed a pump-suction-pushing (16).
In the case where the sample taken is in the liquid state, the sealing piece is surmounted by a funnel (18) intended to serve as a guide for the introduction of said sample.

power supply (12) into which they are screwed.
In the case of the dosage of oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, the two parts (10) and (11) are made of graphite so as to constitute a carbon resistance.
The electrical supply device (12) which at the same time serves as a support for the extraction chamber, can advantageously consist of two insulated copper plates, cooled by water and supplied at low voltage.
Still according to the invention, the funnel (18) is advantageously made of quartz or of mild steel sheet.
In particular, it has been verified that a quartz funnel heated to around 650 C supports a jet of liquid steel of 50 to 100 gr poured from a small foundry ladle,
Furthermore, in order to obtain sufficient precision in the analysis, it has proved advantageous to keep the gas flow rate passing through the analyzer constant throughout the duration of the degassing.
The pipe (13) for sucking the gases to be analyzed advantageously comprises a movable hollow part whose movement. This is intended to allow, on the one hand, the positioning of the suction end of the said mobile part at a short distance (of the order of approximately 10 millimeters) above the crucible during the release of the gases coming from the liquid sample, and on the other hand the withdrawal of said end to release the entrance to the crucible during the introduction of the sample to be analyzed,
Finally, in order to be able to quickly perform the analyzes near the processing equipment, it has proved to be very interesting to mount on a mobile frame (trolley)
all of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
apparatus comprising in particular the sealing part (1), the extraction chamber (8), the analyzer (17) and possibly the funnel (18 - 19 - 20).
It is understood that the attached diagram is given by way of non-limiting example because the present invention is not strictly limited to this single embodiment, accessory modifications being able to be made to the shape and the functioning of the various parts. of the assembly shown, without departing from the scope of said invention.
In this diagram, the funnel (18) is heated by means of a Kanthal resistor (19) embedded in a refractory material (20) contained in a sheet cylinder (25). This funnel has a diameter of between 150 millimeters and an outlet diameter of 15 millimeters. It has been observed that the quartz melts slightly on the surface at the point of impact of the jet of liquid steel, but it seems however that no quartz particles are entrained in the crucible by the jet of steel. It should be noted that under the conditions described above, a thin film of steel solidifies in the lower part of the funnel without, however, resulting in any difficulties for the correct continuation of the operations.
The sheet cylinder containing the refractory material (20), the resistance (19) and the funnel (18) can be placed on the sealing piece (1), either maintained at a distance of 2 to 3 millimeters at the above it. Furthermore, this same sealing part (1) is welded to the upper surface of the extraction chamber (8),
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The width of the slots (4) and (S) can be variable and provision must be made for adjustment to obtain the optimum sealing conditions. In the embodiment given by way of example, the part (1) has a height of about 50 millimeters and an internal diameter of about 30 millimeters, while the width of the slits is set between 0.5 millimeter and 1 millimeter4
As already said before, the oven (8)
is also provided with two pipes (13) and (14), one of which (13) allows the gases (CO, H2, N2, CO2, SO2) which are released from the metal contained in the crucible (9) to be sucked in ) and the other of which (14) blows an additional quantity of gas to sweep the lower part of the enclosure,
Each of the inlet pipes (6), (7) and (14) can be connected to an argon cylinder by passing through a flow meter and through a flow control valve.
The analyzes already carried out according to the method and with the device described above have shown that the total flow of gas blown through the slots of the sealing part (1) must be at least 5 liters. per minute in the case where the internal diameter of this part is 25 millimeters, In the case where said part (1) has an internal diameter of 45 millimeters, it is necessary that the blown flow rate is approximately 10 1 / minute (8 1 / minute for upper slit and 2 1 / minute for lower slit).
Moreover, it can easily be seen that the value of the gas flow rate necessary to prevent any re-entry of air into the chamber (8) and any exit of the gases contained therein depends on the value of the flow rate sucked in by the pump and delivered to through the analyzer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
To obtain a suitable precision of the analysis when this one is carried out by means of an infrared analyzer, it is necessary to keep constant, the gas flow through the analyzer during the whole degassing process. Such a requirement can be met by using a "Wösthoff" manufacture dosing pump whose flow rate can be set between 350 and 700 cc / minute.
