<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

which, by means of the semiconductor control electrode element, the circuit is interrupted. The essential elements of a periodic opening and closing circuit are a choke coil and a diode.
In the circuit which includes the use, the choke coil and the diode a current which decreases, according to the value of the choke, circulates during the time when the energy arrival coming from the source is blocked * The value of the choke can be lower the higher the frequency of opening and closing of the circuit. 0 is why, it is already possible to achieve a result using only the inductance of the armature of the electric motor, when the frequency of opening and closing of the circuit is sufficiently high. We can then do without a special choke coil.
The invention relates to a device for controlling a direct current machine by means of a circuit with periodic opening and closing. According to the invention, the passage from operation as a motor to operation as a generator is effected simply by means of a unipolar coupling member.
The drawing represents a schematic example of an embodiment of the invention, FIG. 1 represents a periodic opening and closing circuit of a type already proposed which visibly gives the possibility of switching from operation as a motor to operation as a generator.
We will first of all explain the circuit for operation as a motor. One can for example consider the traction circuit of a self-propelled trolley. Coming from an energy source 1 and passing through a coupling member 2, which for this operating mode is closed, a current flows in the armature of a machine 3 * direct current and in a choke coil 4 and during the time
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
opening of the semiconductor element 5 with control electrode, this current returns to the energy source 1.
The current is interrupted by means of a capacitor de-energizing circuit of a known type, which is indicated schematically by a second line on the semiconductor element 5 with control electrode. A current which is decreasing) then circulates in a circuit constituted by 'the elements 2, 3, 4 and the diode 6. In this way the direct current machine is controlled during operation as a motor. To switch to operation as a generator, the direction of rotation of the mach !. ne with direct current remaining the same, it is simply necessary to open the coupling member 2.
Assuming that, as is the rule in a direct current machine, the direction of the current in the excitation winding 8 is also reversed, the voltage at the terminals of the armature also changes direction and when l The semiconductor element 5 allows current to flow, the latter circulating in a circuit which is constituted by the armature of the DC machine 3, the choke 4, the controlled semiconductor element 5 and a diode 7 As the semiconductor element 5 interrupts this circuit, the DC machine 3 returns energy to the power source through the diode 6.
Fig. 2 shows a device in which the coupling member 2 of FIG. 1, instead of being a mechanical organ, is an electronic element. For this purpose, for example, a simple controlled semiconductor element can be used 9. Before switching to operation as a generator, that is to say, in the case of a self-propelled carriage, before switching to braking, one must be certain that the current which circulated during motor operation has fallen to zero. This can be done by controlling the voltage at the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
terminals of the controlled semiconductor element 9, or of the diode 6.
The circuit which has just been described is therefore suitable for being controlled entirely by electronic means, by eliminating all the moving contacts in the power circuit. Instead of a simple semiconductor element 9, it is possible to fulfill the role of the coupling member S of FIG. 1, also to use a semiconductor element with de-energization by the current peak of a capacitor.
In braking circuits which use series-wound motors, additional excitation must also be provided. As when the braking is switched off, there is still no current circulating, there is at the terminals of the direct current machine 3 only a voltage of a few volts, which comes from the remanence of the machine. With such a low voltage, there is no current flowing through the semiconductor elements <being controlled, although they are fired. An additional shunt excitation winding must therefore be placed on the direct current machine or the machine must be excited beforehand by means of an additional resistor. Fig. 3 represents a circuit of this kind. We see how to connect this resistor 10.
In motor operation, this resistor is short-circuited and therefore causes no loss. In fig. 3 we also see an inverter 11 intended for the excitation circuit 8.
