<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"THE OLD DELFT".
The invention relates to a method for photographing and / or filming the screen of a television receiver with constant black control.
Constant black attenuation is here understood to mean the use of means by which the black level in the video signal supplied to the video tube is always kept at the same ptental value. This implies, therefore, that the control voltages to be applied to the picture tube are continuously brought to such a potential level that the absolute black, e.g. given by
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the front and back porch of the horizontal synchronizing pulses correspond to one specific voltage at the grid of the picture tube. A certain onset is associated with this grid voltage. brightness of the display.
This initial brightness is therefore a constant in a television receiver with constant black control.
In photography or cinematography of the screen of a television receiver, the exposure dose is determined by the brightness and persistence of the screen in addition to the aperture of the lens used. Since the brightness of the screen can be influenced easily and without inertia by means of the video amplifier, it will generally be adjusted to obtain a correct exposure of the film.
For this purpose one can e.g. determine the brightness of the screen integrally by means of a photoelectric cell and compare the output signal of this cell with a standard, the value of which is determined by the opening of the camera lens and the film used. Any differences can be used to adjust the brightness of the screen. A drawback of this method is that the average brightness of the screen image is measured and not its contrast range. There is thus a danger that despite the control, this range of contrast differs from that which the film could handle in a particular development method.
A control system which does not have this drawback makes use of the fact that the maximum amplitude of the video signal determines the contrast range of the television picture to be written. In this system, therefore, the incoming video signal is compared by an amplitude sensitive detector with a standard signal, which represents the maximum contrast that can be processed and any differences between them are used to control the video amplifier.
In this known system the receiving tube is thus supplied with video signals in which the maximum amplitude, corresponding
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
with the highest light on the screen, is at a constant distance from the fixed black level; the range of contrast occurring on the screen is therefore also constant. However, this contrast magnitude will generally not coincide with the substantially straight portion of the film's gradation curve, but will be offset from it.
The method according to the invention, which does not have this drawback, is characterized in that on the one hand the brightness of the screen, which corresponds to the black level in the video signal, is set to a value which is sufficient to give the film a blackening. give, those on the nearly straight part, by for.
a peak located just above the foot of the gradation curve, while on the other hand the brightness of a small portion of the screen as desired, which portion does not have to coincide with the highest light occurring on the screen, is measured and the amplitude of the video signal is controlled so that the resulting brightness of the selected solar portion causes a heaviness on the film, which is located on the substantially straight portion, preferably just below the shoulder of the gradation curve of the film.
By this method it is achieved in the first place that the deepest black that can occur in the screen image (the initial brightness) never corresponds to a point in the base of the density curve, so that the contrasts occurring in the image in the image. low brightness area could be lost. Furthermore, in order to determine the required amplitude of the video signal, not the maximum amplitude of this signal is compared with a standard, but the brightness of a certain part of the screen, optionally, measured and the video signal is adjusted until this brightness gives a blackening on the film, which is below the shoulder of the gradation curve, preferably as little below as possible.
Since the part of the screen selected for exposure control does not in many cases represent the highest light occurring in the image, as will be explained below, this means that not the entire but
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.1
only part of the contract size of the screen image can be processed by the film, i.e. the part located between the ab-
EMI4.2
colute black level and the brightness of the selected rear area. Larger brightnesses occurring elsewhere on the screen will produce blackings on the film which fall into the shoulder of the gradation curve and thus contrasts in the range of these brightnesses will be compressed.
On the other hand, however ... contrasts in the interesting range, between the black level and the brightness of the selected screen area, are shown as clearly as possible on the film.
A very favorable application example can be pointed out

It should be noted here that it is known by the direct X-ray photography law to determine the exposure time required for the recording by means of one or more measuring chambers placed in the X-ray image smaller than the image size. It is therefore desirable to set the video amplifier to a suitable fixed value, so that, according to experience, in normal cases a screen image with a permissible singall-to-noise ratio can be obtained. If the amplitude of the video signal is now to be amplified for a certain object in order to obtain a correct exposure of the film, the current in the X-ray tube is adjusted accordingly, whereby the signal-to-noise ratio is improved.
For other objects, the current in the X-ray tube will be reduced. Although the signal-to-noise ratio becomes worse as a result, the noise in absolute magnitude also decreases, so that it does not appear on the screen in a disturbing manner. In this way an optimal dosage of the patient is thus obtained.

This pick-up tube is provided with the necessary magnetic coils 19 for the purpose of focusing and deflecting the electrons.
The pick-up tube 11 forms with a television receiver 14 a closed television chain, in which a controllable video amplifier 13 is accommodated and on which other receivers (monitors) can be installed.

A typical gradation curve 3 shown in Fig. 3, This curve shows the gradient of the density. or density D of the developed film as a function of the exposure ratio s It, ie the product of the illuminance and the duration of the exposure. As usual, along the horizontal axis is the

WE see that the first part of the curve, after initially having a flat course (the so-called veil), rises super-proportionally to the point P, then over a large area, is straight or almost straight, and

finally after the point Q starts to bend again. The part of the kr01O. & To the left of the point P is called the foot, the part to the right of the point Q the shoulder of the gxdatteauxve. In the method according to the invention, the absolute black on the screen produces a blackening of the film which is situated to the right of the point ±, but preferably as close to it as possible.
This ensures that even the darkest parts of the image are on the

However, close to the element 20, a mask 21 is placed in the beam path, which mask is provided with an opening 22 and is slidable such that the opening 22 can be covered with selectively different parts of the element 20. Thus, the light from another part of the display screen 15, for example 22 ', is each time thrown onto the photoelectric cell. The dimensions and shape of the opening
22 may be controllable, e.g., by using a number of interchangeable plates with different openings.
The signal supplied by the photoelectric cell is after amplification by a sense amplifier 23 applied to a comparison circuit 24, which also receives a signal from the

After all, the photoelectric cell follows the light spot formed by the electron beam on the screen 15 whenever this spot passes the small dung field 22P while writing an image line. As long as 4.4 flare within the measuring field Is., the output signal of the photo-cell follows the intensity of 4th l.ohtv3sk determined by the video signal.
Of course, this only applies if the afterglow time of the screen is not too long, which, however, is almost always the case with those discussed here.

the signal. The standard signal, which will preferably be an electrical voltage but can also take other forms, is set to such a value that, with the same value of the peak of the output signal of the amplifier 23, the brightness of the output signal associated with this peak. screen 15 results in a blackening of the film, which in the gradation curve of Fig. 3 is located to the left of the point Q, but preferably as close as possible to that point.
This means namely that the blackening caused by the highest light within the selected measuring field still falls just within the almost straight part of the gradation curve, so that all contrasts in the measuring field are proportionally processed by the film and displayed as well as possible.
The comparison circuit 24 is coupled in the example drawn to the power supply 2 in such a way that an even tuee? The difference between the standard signal and the peak value of the measuring signal leads to an adjustment of the current in the X-ray tube 1. As a result, the video signal and thus the screen brightness is adjusted until the said difference is canceled.
Of course, it is also possible to replace the comparison circuit 24 with a display instrument and to manually control the current in the X-ray tube. *
It should be noted that a small afterglow effect of the screen 15 in combination with a limitation of the bandwidth of the measuring amplifier 23 has a favorable effect on the control, because there is. Also addressing the control on small, but very bright disturbances in the image can be prevented.
In fact, with the bandwidth of amplifier 23, one has a means of varying the resolution of the measurement system. In particular, it is recommended to make this resolving power smaller than that corresponding to the smallest image detail that one would still wish to distinguish.
