On connaît plusieurs procédés permettant de préparer

<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

# Preparation process for l-acetoxy-l.l-dic1ano-thane.
Several processes are known for preparing
EMI1.2
1-acetox'-1.1-dicyano-ethane corresponding to the formula
EMI1.3
This is how this compound is obtained by reacting 2 moles. of
EMI1.4
ketene with 2 moles of hydrocyanic acid, or by reaction of 1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mole of acetic anhydride with 2 moles of hydrocyanic acid with formation of 1 mole of water. In addition, pure acetyl chloride can be transformed with copper cyanide into nitrile of pyruvic acid and this nitrile will then be subjected to long-term dimerization (up to 3 days) during which it dimerizes into 1-acetoxy-1.1-dicyano-ethane.
All of these processes, however, have the drawback of requiring hydrocyanic acid or copper cyanide as raw materials, which makes them quite expensive.
Now, the applicant has found that 1-acetoxy-1.1-dicyano-ethane can be prepared in a simple manner and without using hydrocyanic acid or cyanides, if the oximico-acetone is reactivated with approximately equimolecular amounts of a dehydrating agent and with a basic catalyst, and the 1-acetoxu-1.1-dicyano-ethane formed is isolated, preferably by distillation under reduced pressure. In this reaction, the oximino-acetone, which is easily accessible industrially by the action of nitrous vapors on acetone, loses one mole of water and the intermediate dehydration product dimerizes under the action of the basic catalyst. in 1-acetoxy-ll-dicyano-ethane.
As dehydrating agents there can be used in principle a whole series of different substances such as phosphorus oxides, thionyl chloride, acetyl chloride, ketene and single or mixed anhydrides, preferably. 4 low molecular weight aliphatic carboxylic acids. It is particularly recommended to use acetic anhydride since in this case the formation of unwanted side products can be greatly limited. The favorable action of acetic anhydride is due to the fact that it fixes the water initially removed from the oximino-acetone, this at a rate such that this water does not have time to liberate hydrocyanic acid
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
by hydrolysis of the intermediate product.
Studies on the mode of action of acetic anhydride show that oximino-acetone is first acetylated. and that the acetylated oximino-acetono then decomposes into pyruvic acid nitrile and acetic acid, according to the following reaction scheme:
EMI3.1
In this reaction no free water is formed. Acetyl-oximino-aoetone is a new compound which can be isolated from the reaction mixture in pure form by distillation under reduced pressure.
It is recommended that the dehydrating agents be used in approximately equimolecular amounts, relative to the oximin-acetone used. In principle, it is also possible for the agent to operate with an excess or a deficiency of the desiccant, but of course such a procedure is not very economical.
As catalysts, weakly basic compounds will be used, preferably organic compounds, for example tertiary amines in which the nitrogen atom of the amino group is acyclic or is part of a ring. Suitable amines including the nitrogen atom of group6. amino is acyclic derived from primary, linear or branched alkylamines, preferably comprising 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or for example benzylamine, cyclohexylamine, aniline, α-naphthylamine, ss-naphthyl-smine and lower homologs of these compounds.
The hydrogen atoms of the amino group are then

These compounds can carry, in addition to the tertiary amino group, other functional groups.
We can thus use 2-acetamino-etha-

nol, N-dinethyl- and N-diethylamino-acetic acids and their salts. Suitable amines in which the nitrogen atom of the amino group is bonded as a heteroatom in a ring are, for example, pyridine and α-, ss-and # -picolines. In addition, the triphenylphosphine and other alkylated and arylated phosphines, ammonium salts, for example ammonium acetate, and other salts of acetic acid, especially the acetates of metals, can be used. alkalinn. Mixtures of the mentioned substances can also be used. It is particularly
EMI4.3
advantageous to use n-diethyl-a-naphthylamine, N-diethyl-p-naphthylajcine, pyridine and triphenylphosphine.
The catalysts are used in an amount of between 0.1 and 10%, preferably between 1 and 5%, relative to the weight of the oximinoacetone used.
The reaction is carried out at atmospheric pressure at a temperature between 50 ° C. and the boiling point of the solution. The Applicant has found that the temperature decisively influences the rate of dimerization. The dimerization of acetyl cyanide, considered as an inter-
EMI4.4
medial, in 1-acetoxy-1.1-dicyano-cthane is all the slower as the temperature is kept lower. At room temperature, a good yield of 1-acetoxy-1.1-diacyano-ethane is obtained only after dimerization of acetyl cyanide.

pure for about three days. On the other hand, if one operates at a temperature of approximately 70 ° C., a better performance is obtained already after 45 minutes.
It is surprising that at high temperature, a higher formation of secondary products is not observed, contrary to what one might expect.
Although it is recommended to work under atmospheric pressure, the process according to the invention can be carried out at moderately high pressures, for example up to 10 atmospheres. In these cases too it is sufficient '. to apply reaction temperatures of between 50 and 130 C approximately.
The process according to the invention can be carried out as follows: reflux is carried out for at least 5 minutes, advantageously for 30 to 90 minutes and more

finally, the 1-acetox7-1.1-dieyano-ettLane obtained by distillation under reduced pressure is separated. surprisingly, the desired dimerization already takes place in the very dilute acetic acid solution which is then obtained.

1.1-dicyano-acetane formed by distillation, advantageously under reduced pressure.
More precisely, roughly equimolecular amounts of oximinoacetone and acetic anhydride are heated, the products then formed are continuously listed during heating, ie acetyl cyanide, acetic acid and hydrocyanic acid. , and collected in a first vessel heated to 30-50 ° C. Heating of this vessel causes the hydrocyanic acid to separate immediately from the distillate and can be condensed separately in a second vessel.
After the distillation of the hydrocyanic acid is complete, the catalyst is added to the distillate in the first vessel and the mixture is heated for 30-90 minutes and preferably for about 45 minutes at about 60-120% and preferably at about. 70 C. The liquid in the first vessel is then subjected to distillation under reduced pressure. In addition to acetic acid, l-acetoxy-1.1-dicyano-ethane is thus obtained in yields of 60 to 70%, relative to the oxiaino-acetone used.
1-Acetoxy-1.1-dicyano-ethane is an important base product for the preparation of 1.1-dicyano-ethylene (vinylidene cyanide), an easily polymerizable substance which is used in polymer form for the manufacture of synthetic fibers and resins. industrial scale.
The following examples illustrate the present invention without however limiting it.
EXAMPLE 1:
50 g of 90% oximinoacetone and 60 g of acetic anhydride are refluxed for 60 minutes. 4 g of N-diethyl-Ó-naphthylamine are added, the mixture is further heated for 50 minutes at 80 ° C. and the mixture is distilled under reduced pressure. The 1-acetoxy-1.1-dicyano-ethane passes to 65 C under 2 mm of mercury. We obtain 19.6 6, or 55 5 of the theoretical quantity, relative to the or

ximinoacetone. The product has a melting point of 67 C.
When the oximino-acetone and acetic anhydride are reacted at about 65 ° C. and the reaction mixture is distilled off under reduced pressure, one obtains, after a head of acetic acid, acetone (boiling point at 6 mm Hg 65 C) which is purified by fractional distillation.

50 g of 90% oximino-acetone and 60 g of acetic anhydride are heated and the reaction products formed (acetic acid and ketyl cyanide) are continuously sent into a first vessel heated to 500C. This vessel is connected by a distillation bridge to a second cooled vessel in which the hydrocyanic acid is condensed. One obtains 3.4 g of pure hydrocyanic acid corresponding to 23% of the theoretical amount, relative to the oximinoacetone used.
The container is then removed with hydrocyanic acid and 4 g of N-diethyl-Ó-naphthylamine are added to the distillate from the first container, consisting of acetic acid and acetyl cyanide. The mixture is heated for 45 minutes at 70 ° C. and it is distilled under reduced pressure. 24.5 g of 1-acetoxy-1.1-dicyanoethane are obtained, which corresponds to 69% of the theoretical amount, relative to the oximino-acetone used.
