<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

IMPROVEMENTS TO CONTROL AND CONTROL DEVICES
SAFETY FOR BURNER SYSTEMS
The subject of the present invention is an electrical device ensuring the control, for example by room thermostat, of a burner installation and ensuring the safety of the latter against the various incidents likely to occur.
It is known that a burner installation generally comprises a motor driving the blower @ air and the pump or other fuel supply device, an ignition device, generally with an electric transformer and spark gap, possibly a electromagnetic valve for supplying fuel to the burner proper, and finally a control and safety device which, receiving the order from the room thermostat or
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
other device intended to start and stop the installation, carries out the various phases necessary for this purpose, such as starting the engine, opening the valve, temporarily activating the ignition device and it stops as soon as ignition is performed,
this device also ensures the monitoring of the operation so as to stop the installation if the flame does not ignite in a reasonable time or if it goes out during the operation of the burner. The most widespread means of detecting the flame is constituted by a photoelectric resistance cell, but thermal expansion devices, thermoelectric couples, etc. have also been used.
The device used must also ensure safety with regard to its own parts and determine, for example, the shutdown (or not allow the start-up) of the installation if the flame detector is switched off. service for one cause or another.
In known devices of the type in question, the motor of the installation, generally of the single-phase type with an auxiliary starting phase, is always controlled by means of an electromagnetic switch of the type called "contactor" on whose motor coils act. the various circuits of the device. The presence of this contactor has the drawback of increasing the cost price very appreciably, especially for small installations.
The present invention, due to Mr. Gaston BUFFAT, aims to avoid the above drawback and to make it possible to establish a control and safety device for burner installation, of simple construction and low cost price, and which rerplisse however all the conditions that one is entitled to direct from devices of this kind.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In accordance with the invention, the control device (room thermostat or other) directly closes the circuit for normal operation of the motor through a circuit breaker with delayed operation, while in parallel to the motor is connected the winding d. 'a relay which controls the circuit of the engine starting winding and preferably also the circuit of the ignition device, which relay is itself placed under the control of the flame detector so as to close the two aforementioned circuits when closing the control unit and then opening them when the flame is lit.
In addition, according to another characteristic of the invention, the flame detector, produced in the known manner by a photoelectric resistance cell. is connected in parallel with the relay winding, the whole of the winding and the cell being connected in series with a current limiting impedance, so that when the flame is ignited the cell short-circuits l winding to a sufficient extent to put it out of effect. This particular arrangement has the advantage that if the cell becomes damaged, which in practice results in a lowering of its resistance in the dark, the relay no longer operates, even momentarily, so that @ the motor cannot start and the burner cannot ignite.
The appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it possible to better understand the invention, the characteristics that it has and the advantages that it is likely to provide.
The single figure of this drawing represents the diagram of a control and safety device for a burner installation according to the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In this figure the single-phase motor M for driving the fan and the pump of a fuel burner. liquids has a normal running winding.
I1 and a starting winding Ia in series with a phase shifter D. The starting circuit (circuit of winding I2 and phase shifter D) is controlled by a working relay contact 1RF. at closing. This circuit is connected in parallel with the normal operating circuit (winding I1) and all of these two circuits are arranged in series between the line wires L1 and L2 with the driving part of a circuit breaker with delayed operation T ( for example with the heating element of a thermal circuit breaker), the TH control thermostat of the installation (room thermostat for example) and contact 1T of the circuit breaker T, contact which works, of course, on opening ,
The ignition device consists of a high voltage transformer TA which is associated with a suitable spark gap.
This transformer is connected between wires L1 and L2 in series with a 2RF relay contact working on closing,
The RF winding of the relay which comprises the aforementioned 1RF and 2RF contacts is connected in a branch circuit arranged in parallel on all the circuits of the motor and of the heating element of the thermal circuit breaker T, this circuit comprising an impedance Z current limiting device, in series with the RF winding and a resistive photocell X in parallel on said winding.
The general switch of the installation has also been indicated at I in FIG.
To explain the operation, we will assume switch 1 closed and the installation at rest, that is to say
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the TH thermostat open. The RF winding is currentless and therefore the IRF and 2RF contacts are open.
The TA ignition transformer is disabled. Since the burner is not operating, the X cell is not illuminated and is at its maximum resistance, which is considerable against the impedance of the RF winding.
When the TH room thermostat closes, current flows in the normal operating circuit (winding I1) of the motor M as well as in the branch circuit which contains the RF winding of the relay. Due to the high resistance of the X cell, this winding acts and causes the 1RF and 2RF contacts to close. The motor therefore starts and the transformer comes into action to ignite the burner, the motor of which provides power. As soon as the X cell sees the flame, its resistance drops and it then practically short-circuits the RF winding, the intensity of the current in the branch circuit being limited only by the Z impedance suitably established for this purpose. The 1RF and 2RF contacts therefore open.
The motor M then takes its normal operating speed as a single-phase motor with single winding I1 and the transformer TA is put out of action.
If for some reason the flame does not ignite, the motor M continues to operate with its starting winding I2, thus absorbing a considerable current compared to that of normal operation. As a result, after a certain time, variable at will, the circuit breaker T trips and causes the entire installation to return to rest. This can then no longer be restarted without first re-engaging the circuit breaker.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
If the flame is extinguished during normal operation, the X cell resumes its high dark resistance and therefore the RF winding acts to close the 1RF and 2RF contacts. The start winding is therefore re-energized by causing a sharp increase in the current absorbed by the motor so that circuit breaker T trips after the expected delay time.
Finally, if the X cell deteriorates, which corresponds in practice to a decrease in its darkness resistance, when the fault reaches a degree liable to interfere with operation, the current that this cell drifts when starting up and before ignition becomes such that contacts 1RF and 2RF no longer close. The motor therefore does not start and its normal winding I1 remains energized with the rotor at rest. Under these conditions, the absorbed current is much greater than that of the operating mode, so that here again the thermal circuit breaker T trips before any possibility of accident.
It is important to note that this last security is absolute in the sense that one cannot have an initial closing time, even a very short one, followed by an opening, as could happen if the 1RF and 2RF contacts were working on the opening, the X cell being connected in series with the RF winding.
It must also be understood that the above description has been given only by way of example and that it in no way limits the field of the invention, which would not be departed from by replacing the details of execution described. by all other equivalents. Thus the installation can include an electromagnetic valve that can be connected for example in parallel to the winding I1 of the motor M.
