; " PROCEDE DE PREPARATION D'ALCOYLPHENOLS " " WERKWIJZE TER BEREIDING VAN ALKYLFENOLEN ".-
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
senoe d'air.
on laisse la réaotion se poursuivre jusqu'à ce quo la phénol substitué désiré comme produit soit formé dans la quantité voulue, A oe moment, on arrête la réaction, de façon à empêcher l'isomérisation, la désalcoylation et la production de sous-produits et polymères indésirables;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

; “PROCESS FOR PREPARING ALCOYLPHENOLS” “WERKWIJZE TER BEREIDING VAN ALKYLFENOLEN” .-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Belgian patent 604,774 relates to a process for the preparation of a slcoyl-phenol which consists in bringing into contact a phenol having, in its molecule, at least 2 unsubstituted hydrogen atoms attached to carbon atoms of the nucleus. aromatic with a mono-olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metal hydride or an organometallic compound, which hydride or organometallic compound can be represented by the formula MR'n in which M represents a metal from the group 1, 2 or 3 of the periodic table, R represents a hydrogen atom, an alooyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxide group,
an aralooyl group, or an aralooxy group and n is the valenoe of the metal M, it being understood that when n- 2 the symbols R can be the same or different and when n = 3 the symbols R can be identical seen different or soft d 'between them can be identical *
In the improved process of the present addition, organometallic compounds are used which have the structure Al (R) (X) 2 or Al (R) 2X where R is a radioal aloyl and X is a halogen atom, preferably. of chlorine * Examples of these compounds are di6ethylaluminum chloride, ethylaluninium diohloride, diisobutylaluminum chloride, mono-isobutylaluminum diohlide,
ethyl-diiodo-aluminum and diethyl-iodo-aluminum, Complex moldoules based on these compounds such as ethyl-aluminum sesquchloride (Et) 3Al2CI, methyl-aluminum sesquichloride and methyl sesqui- -bromide -aluminum are also effective. Mixtures of all of these aluminum-alkyl halides can also be used.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
An important advantage of using these liquidated and miscible aluminum promoters is the elimination of the need for solid catalyst storage and dissolution facilities. When using solid catalysts such as triohloride aluminum, extensive storage, processing and other facilities are required. In addition, since the amount of hydrogen halide reaction by-products is minimized, corrosion and hazards to personnel are significantly reduced.
Only catalytic amounts of the promoter are necessary for carrying out the reaction.
Although larger or smaller proportions of the aluminum alkyl halide are effective, it has been observed that better results are obtained when 0.001 to.
0.5 mole of promoter per mole of phenol, and amounts of 0.005 to 0.10 moles of promoter are particularly preferred, on the same basis. The best amount of promoter will obviously depend on the nature of the reacting bodies and the promoter and reaction conditions employed.
The promoters are generally in the form of colorless or weakly colored liquids, and they are easily mixed and introduced into the phenol-hydrocarbon reaction system, or mixed with either reactant and introduced with it. him. For example, the aluminum-alkyl halide can be premixed with the phenol, and the resulting mixture contaot with the olefin in the reaction zone.
It is an especially advantageous feature of the present addition that it is possible to store and transport the promoter in solution in a phenol, for example.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
example in ordinary phenol, and to use the mixture in the alooykation process of the addition,
It is a particular advantage of the addition that although high temperatures of up to 300 0 can be used, temperatures of 200 0 or less are perfectly suitable. Alooylation is slow at temperatures below 50 ° C., and a temperature range of 100-200 ° C. is preferred, with temperatures of 450 ° C. being effective.
Selectivity seems to be the best at low temperatures *
Alooylation can be carried out at atmospheric pressure. Since the alooylation hydrocarbon agent can be gaseous, however, it has been advantageous to use sufficient pressure to maintain the agent in the liquid phase at the reaction temperature. pressures ranging from 8 atmospheres absolute to 350 atmospheres absolute have been found to be suitable for this purpose, although pressures below 70 atmospheres absolute are preferred for convenience.
Reaction can be carried out in a batch, semi-continuous or continuous manner.
One convenient way to conduct the alooylation is to mix the phenol and the promoter, and then add the olefinic hydrocarbon to the resulting mixture. Alternatively, the phenol, the olefin and the promoter can be introduced simultaneously in metered amounts to the alkylation reactor. The olefin can be added gradually to the phenol, or it can be added in one quick addition. the method of addition is, however, very efficient when the phenol is at all times causing alkylation in contact with excess olefin.
As the promoters decompose rapidly in air, it is preferable that the addition of the catalyst be carried out without
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
air senoe. One convenient way to ensure an inert atmosphere is to sweep or fill the system with an inert gas, such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium, etc.
As the phenol and the keyfinic hydrocarbon in reaction as well as the alkylated products are liquidated
OR gases at reaction temperatures, there is no need for a solvent in which to conduct the alkylation. For temperature control, however, inert solvents or thinners can be used, if desired *
These are preferably non-reactive liquids boiling at high temperature such as long chain paraffins, for example n-deoane, n-bonane, n-undéoane, n-hexadecane.
Once the phenol, olefin, and promoter have been brought together under the reaction conditions,
the reaction is allowed to continue until the desired substituted phenol product is formed in the desired amount, at which point the reaction is stopped, so as to prevent isomerization, dealkylation and production of by-products and unwanted polymers;
To stop the reaction, we can reduce the. pressure and / or cool the reaction mixture and / or treat the reaotion mixture to deaotivate the promoter. This can be accomplished by washing the system with water, alcohol or dilute acid, such as acid hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, or with caustic soda, A 5% aqueous solution of a mineral acid or an alkali metal hydroxide can be used for this purpose *
The reaction products can be separated from the reaction system by well known industrial methods such as fractional distillation, crystallization or extraction.
The phenol and monoalkylphenol components can conveniently be separated before distillation by
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
extraction of the reaction system with caustic soda which also serves, as mentioned above, to stop the action of the catalyst.
In general, the process of the present addition can be used for all the alooylations which can be carried out by means of the prooédé of Belgian patent 604,774 mentioned above, In particular, the mono- or the di-ortho-alooylation of phenol or of moncalcoylphenols can To be carried out by the method of the present addition. Phenol and propylene can, for example, be reacted with the addition of aluminum-isobutyl chloride to produce o-iopropyl-phenol.
The progress of the reaction is easily followed by gas phase chromatography or similar analytical techniques, and the reaction is easily stopped when the yield of product has reached its maximum. Similarly, 2,6-di-tert- amyl-phenol oe is easily prepared with high speed by reacting iso-amylene with phenol in the presence of diethylaluminum chloride. The reaction of o-cresol and isobutylene in the presence of aluminum-diisobutyl gives 2-methyl-6-tert-butyl-phenol.
Other products which are obtained by the addition process include 3-methyl-2,6-diethyl-phenol, obtained by alkylating m-oreaol with ethylene; 3-methyl-2,6-diisopropyl -phenol, obtained by alkylation of propylene with m-cresol; 2-ethyl-6-tert-butyl-phenol, obtained by alooylation of 2-ethyl-phenol with isobutylene; 2-isopropylnaphthol-1, obtained by aloylution of naphthol-1 with propylene; 2-deoylnaphthol-1, obtained by aloylution of naphthol-1 with propylene; 2-decyl-naphthol-1. obtained by alkylation of naphthol-1 with decone-11 and 2,5-diisopropylhydroquinone. obtained by ulooylation of hy- droquinone with propylene.

The following non-limiting examples show how the addition process can be implemented,
EXAMPLE 1. -
About 35 g of uno uolution 6 10% by weight of aluminum chloride-diisobutyl in oyolohexane are slowly added to 96 g of phenol (181 parts per million of H2O) at 80 C, under a nitrogen atmosphere * After vaporization by expansion of the cyclohexane and once the evolution of isobutane has ceased, the mixture is introduced into an auto-olave and 168 g of isobutylene are added to it under pressure. The mixture is heated to 120 ° C. and maintained at this temperature by stirring for about 4 hours.
The progress of the reaction is followed by taking samples from time to time in the reactor and analyzing them by gas phase ohromatoraphy.
A graphical representation of the concentrations of the components as a function of time shows that after 235 minutes a concentration of approximately 80 moles of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-phenol exists in the reaction mixture (excluding hydrochlorides).

EXAMPLE III
In a third test, about 35 g of a 10% solution of aluminum-diiscbutyl ohloride in oyolhexane were slowly added to 96 g of phenol (200 parts per million of H2O) at 100 C under atmosphere. nitrogen. The temperature was raised to 150 ° 0 to vaporize off all of the oyolohexane and isobutane, then the mixture was cooled to 60 ° C. and maintained at this temperature for 3 weeks.
Apart from a darkening of the solution with age, no physical change is observed, for example precipitation or evolution of gas, the phenol-catalyst mixture is then introduced into the autoolave, and pressure is added. 168 g of isobutyl. The mixture is heated to 120 ° 0 and maintained at this temperature with stirring for
180 minutes approximately. The progress of the reaction is followed by taking two samples intermittently from the reactor and analyzing them by gas phase ohromatoraphy.
A representation of the oonoontration of the components as a function of time shows that after 160 minutes a concentration of about 75 moles of 2,6-di-t-butyl-phenol exists in the reaction mixture (excluding hydrocarbons).
