<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of dimers and trimers of bloolobeptides or hydrogenation products thereof and non-energy fuels containing the same.

. The catalysts used in the process of the invention are the organic complex compounds of metals of the first subgroup and the eighth group of the periodic table, preferably of nickel col and iron, but also of palladium, cobalt and copper. in an oxidation state that is less than 2 and preferably zero, the metal usually being the central atom, and the ligands being organic groups such as bicycloheptadiene itself or its dimers and trimers. Other electron donating ligands are olefins or organic compounds such as acrylonitrile or Lewis bases such as triaryl fofins, alone or wool with bicycloheptadiene or the dimers and trimers thereof.
Although organic complex compounds are sometimes understood to include carbonyl compounds such as nickel tetracarbonyl, this is not the case in the present invention. However, it is possible that the complex compounds used in the invention contain carbonyl groups in addition to the mentioned groups.
The complexes can be prepared by known methods. Such a method is, for example, the following: a soluble compound of a metal of the first subgroup and / or eighth group of the periodic table, such as acetyl acetonates, diacetyldioxime compounds, alcoholates or acetic esteronolates, is prepared in the presence of an inert organic solvent, such as benzene , xylene or tetrahydrofuran added to an electron-donating compound. Then a reducing agent such as aluminum tralkyl or alkoxy-dialkylaluminium is added, which is preferably not allowed to react with the solvent.
The solution thus obtained can preferably be used immediately for the di- and trimerization of the bicyeloheptadiene. It is also possible to isolate the catalytically active complex compound and to use this compound as such.
Furthermore, the use of a solvent is not necessary provided that the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>

metal additions required for the formation of the complex are themselves soluble in bicyaohertadiene, which is usually the case. When the metal compound is already in a low oxidation state, as with nickel carbonyl. even the use of a reducing agent is not necessary. In this way, highly effective catalysts can be prepared by incorporating compounds of the said metals
EMI3.2
a low oxidation state, preferably the oxidation state 0, in. especially nickel carbonyl, to be mixed with the eletron-providing compound, such as bicycloheptadiene and / or its di- and trimers.
EMI3.3
The dimerization or trimerization according to the invention takes place at temperatures of 0-200 ° C, preferably 60-150 ° C and at normal or slightly higher pressure, for example 5 at.
The compounds obtained by the method according to the invention are characterized by a high density and high combustion heat.
They can be isolated and separated in a known manner, such as by

chromatography or by extraction with a solvent. If desired, they can be hydrogenated in a manner known per se, for example with a 3-aney nickel catalyst. The hydrogenation products have a comparably high heat of combustion. Three different dimers and a trimer of bicycloheptadiene were isolated by gas chromatography and their properties were examined. The gas chromatogram showed a mixture of three isomers referred to below as dimer I, dimer II or diner III, according to the order in which they passed the gas chromatograph's detector.
They are believed to have the following structures
