EMI4.7
ron 40 C. Toutefois, il existe plusieurs facteurs
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

This manufacture is carried out by heating a mixture of tutrafluol'o8thylene with a lower alkanol at a temperature compressed between 50 C and 350 C, in the presence of a catalyst giving * a free radical, such as for example organic and inorganic peroxides,

Generally, one component or the other is required to control the temperature of the reaction mixture. However, you can 6, filament resort to external cooling.
The reaction temperature, as such, is not critical because the reaction
EMI4.6
occurs over a very wide range of temperature.
Thus, the desired products have been obtained over a temperature range of from about -60 ° to about
EMI4.7
ron 40 C. However, there are several factors
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
which govern the choice of reaction temperatures a. At very low temperatures the solubility of the reaction products in the solvent is significantly reduced, the products precipitate and stirring difficulties are encountered. At temperatures near the upper temperature range, the addition should be done very slowly in portions to control the heat output.
A preferred temperature range is that of -10 C to 25 C. Further, since isocyanates and tomatoes are both polymerizable, it is advantageous to maintain the temperature at a low temperature. value as low as possible while being compatible with a practical reaction rate.
Since isocyantates readily react with water, the reaction is carried out under anhydrous conditions; that is, it is intended that there should not be more than 5 to 10 ppm in total of water present in all the reactants, since any water present will be removed by the reaction with the isocyanate and will result in loss of reagents. Reagents and solvent, if one is used, are dried thoroughly before use.
Although it is not necessary during the reaction to operate in the complete absence of oxygen, the preferred procedure uses substantially oxygen-free conditions.
The molar ratios of alcohol to isocyanate can be varied and still obtain the desired product. Thus, the reaction of the isocyanate
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
and alcohol is quantitative at a 1: 1 ratio and, since any excess of either reagent must be squeezed out during product purification, in proportions corresponding to a 1: 1 ratio of the alcohol to isocyanate correspond to the preferred embodiment.
The reaction between the alcohol and the isocyanate can be carried out in the absence of a solvent, but difficulties have been encountered with stirring as well as with dissipating the heat given off during the reaction. The use of solvents is the preferred embodiment, since the niceties facilitate agitation and heat dissipation. any inert solvent, ie, solvents which do not react with the reactants or the reaction product, can be used satisfactorily.
Thus, hydrocarbons such as benzene and toluene and chlorinated solvents such as chloroform and methylene chloride are not satisfactory. Acetonitrile can also be used. In the case of the solvents indicated above, the reaction products precipitate as they are formed. Enough solvent is used to provide an easy to stir reaction mixture. Since the solvent is needed only for its physical action, the ratio of the volume of solvent to the volume of the other reactants is not critical.
However, when one gram molecule of alcohol and isotyanate is used, 1 to 2 liters of solvent will give the desired results.
