<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Il est à remarquer que pendant une opération de manuten- tion de combustible, la douille et la cartouche combustible sont saisis par les grappins main tout le poids de l'élément combustible est supporté par les griffes 7 en prise avec la douille 3 car ily a un mouvement perdu entre les griffes 9 et le dispositif manutentionneur du fait que le cylindre 25 coulisse dans le cylindre 14;

Improvements to handling devices for fuel elements.
The present invention relates to fuel element handling devices and, in particular, to devices for handling fuel elements provided with their sockets, that is to say fuel elements of the type comprising a fuel cartridge housed and supported. in a tabular socket.
The present invention is applicable to an apparatus used for loading and unloading nuclear reactors in which the fuel elements are housed in vertical channels formed in the reactor core, this apparatus being operable from above the reactor core. and comprising a grapple which can be introduced into the channels to grip the fuel elements. During loading and unloading operations
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It is undesirable to subject the fuel cartridge to tensile stresses because of the risk of damaging the cartridge liner and the grapples are normally arranged so as to engage the fuel element socket, whereby the cartridge is damaged. fuel button can be suspended.
However, in the case of a defective casing due to mechanical deterioration, this method of suspending the fuel element can have dangerous consequences if the casing breaks and the invention aims to provide an improved fuel handling device to eliminate this risk.
According to the present invention, in a device for handling fuel elements provided with their sockets comprising a main grapple intended to grip the sleeve of a fuel element in order to raise and lower the fuel element, an auxiliary grapple is provided. intended to grip the fuel cartridge in such a way as to retain the fuel element in the event of rupture of the socket, the auxiliary grapple being coupled to the main grapple by means allowing some lost movement so that, during loading and unloading operations normal, the weight of the element is fully supported by the grapple which grips the socket.
The two grapples can be actuated by track or return spring tires controlled by a common gas source. The device preferably comprises a gas shutoff valve actuated by the weight of the fuel element and capable of preventing the grabs from accidentally unhooking from the element when the latter is suspended from the handling device.
A fuel element handling device according to the invention will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a fragmentary sectional elevation of this device. This device can be part of a loading and unloading apparatus for moderate nuclear reactors /

graphite and gas-cooled, the kind where the fuel elements? are housed in vertical channels in the reactor core.
In the drawing, a fuel element 1 comprising a fuel cartridge 2 is supported in a graphite socket 3 and can be placed in one of several vertical channels 4 households in the core 5 of the reactor, The loading and unloading of the reactor s 'carry out from above the channels 4 by means of grapples and, for this purpose, the inner surface of the sleeve 3 is provided with notches 6 in which the claws 7 of a main grapple can engage. A flanged head 8 is provided at the upper end of the cartridge 2 and the claws 9 of an auxiliary grapple can grip this flanged head.
The claws 7 and 9 and their control mechanism are housed in a cylindrical skirt 10 mounted * at the lower end of a cylinder II. This cylinder is connected by a flexible cable 12 to a coupling member 13 by which it is connected to a lifting cable (not shown).
A fire cylinder 14 is mounted coaxially in the skirt 10 and the outer surface of the fixed cylinder 14 carries radial lugs 15 to which the claws 7 are articulated by pins 16.
Each claw 7 is actuated by a lug 17 which moves vertica. ballast in a slide 18 of one end of the claw. The lugs 17 are fixed in tubule ires compartments 19 themselves fixed to the lower end of a bush 20 which can slide on the cylinder 14, O-rings 21 and 22 being provided between the sliding surfaces of the cylinder. sleeve and cylinder.
The bush 20 is normally biased in its lower position, by a compression spring 23, so that the claws 7 attack the notches 6 in the bush 3 like the! In the drawing, to free the claws 7 from the notches 6, the sleeve 20 is lifted by introducing pressurized gas into a space 41 via a gas duct 24. The sleeve therefore acts like a piston. pneumatic. The claws 9 are mounted at the lower end of another cylinder 25 which slides loosely in the cylinder 14,
an annular stop 26
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
being provided at the lower end of cylinder 14 to retain cylinder 25. These claws are shown on pivots 27 supported by cylinder 25 and are actuated by lugs 28 sliding in cam slides 29. Lugs 28 are supported by another piston 30 which slides in cylinder 25 .; piston 30 is normally biased towards its upper position by a compression spring 31 so that the claws engage the clamped head of the fuel cartridge. In order to disengage the claws 19, compressed gas is introduced into a flexible bellows 32, thus expanding the bellows against the force of the spring 31 so that the piston 30 descends.
The compressed gas is introduced into the bellows 32 via a helically wound pipe 33 and housed in the cylinder 1.4 and is delivered through a gas supply duct 34 which is also connected to the duct 24 to actuate the piston sleeve 20.
The gas supply duct 34 is connected to the ducts 24 and 33 by the coincident openings 35 and 36 formed in the cylinder 11 and in a central member 37 housed in this cylinder.
The arrangement is such that when a fuel element is lifted the members 37 and 11 are moved relative to each other by the weight of the element and the slots 35 and 36 move apart from each other. the other; this peculiarity ensures that the grapples cannot become detached from the fuel element during the loading and unloading operations, following accidental actuation of the gas supply.
Housing 10 contains a number of microswitches such as 38 and 39 which are capable of indicating different device conditions. The device can be used with two types of fuel element comprising sockets of different internal diameters and one of the microswitches is actuated by a part of the grapple (not shown) which is returned to one or the other. another of two positions depending on the diameter of the sleeve.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In a fuel element handling operation, for example an unloading operation, the device is lowered in the channel 4 until the housing 10 is placed on the upper end of the fuel element socket 3. and the device is oriented to bring the claws 7 in line with the notches 6; one of the micro-switches is actuated to indicate that this is the case.
Then, the grapples are actuated by shutting off the supply of compressed gas to the actuating pistons of the grapples, the inner claws 9 having been automatically pushed back into the correct position to take account of any differential displacement between the bushing. graphite and the fuel cartridge; another microswitch is actuated to indicate the type of daille attacked. The handling device is then raised to unload the fuel element from the channel, the cylinder 10 being slightly lowered by the weight of the fuel elements so that the slots 35 and 36 are offset from one another.
It should be noted that during a fuel handling operation, the sleeve and the fuel cartridge are gripped by the hand grapples while the weight of the fuel element is supported by the claws 7 in engagement with the sleeve 3 because there is a lost movement between the claws 9 and the handling device due to the fact that the cylinder 25 slides in the cylinder 14;
the fuel cartridge is thus not subjected to a tensile force. However, if the graphite sleeve 3 should break, the fuel element 1 is still retained by the claws 9 which grip the flanged head 8 of the fuel cartridge, the cylinder, in this cage being driven towards down to the stop 26.
