<EMI ID=2.1>

<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>
i extérieurs.

Surface treatment of objects in thermoplastic resins.
The present invention relates to:. The treatment of over-

to give them particular surface properties, in particular with a view to stabilizing them against the action of light and / or making them antistatic.
It is known (Belgian patent n [deg.] 531,794) to impart a polished and shiny appearance to the surfaces of objects made of thermo-resins.

for a limited time. with a solvent - having a swelling action
on the resin. It is also known that thermoplastic resins are sensitive to the inaction of light and that they have the property
retain dust due to the electrostatic charges accumulated on their surface.

Various chemical compounds have been proposed to stabilize to protect plastics against the action of ultraviolet rays. Many antistatic agents are known; these additional compounds are incorporated into the mass of the polymer (Belgian patent n [deg.] 504,246) before its shaping, or applied superficially by dispersion of solutions (United States patent n [deg.] 2,678,285) . The first method has the drawback of requiring large amounts of additional material, while the second presents certain difficulties due to the lack of adhesion of the superficially applied layer.
It has been proposed to avoid this drawback by applying the powdered product to the surface of the object and by melting it by heating at a temperature below the melting point of the resin (Belgian patent n [deg.] 570,013) -

operation, polish the surface of manufactured articles and superficially incorporate customary additives.
The method forming the object of the present invention consists in immersing the articles for a few seconds in a solvent having a swelling action on the resin, this solvent containing in the dissolved state a stabilizing and / or antistatic agent.
and drying the objects by evaporating the solvent.
The process is applicable: to the treatment of any thermoplastic object, more particularly. To polyvinyl chloride objects obtained by molding or machining, for which it is appropriate to improve the surface finish and to incorporate additional agents. It is particularly applicable to the surface treatment of flat or corrugated polyvinyl chloride plates.
As solvents having a swelling action on the resin, use is advantageously made of tetrahydrofuran, cyclohexanone or a mixture of the two, for example a mixture of 85 vol% of tetrahydro-furan and 15 vol% of cyclohexanone. Other solvents such as dimethylformamide and mixtures of acetone and carbon disulphide are less active but can be used hot, for example at <EMI ID = 4.1>
The ture of the solvent obviously depends on the swelling power of the solvent with respect to the resin.
For the best solvents mentioned above, good results have been obtained by soaking the parts for 5 to 60 seconds, preferably 10 to 30 seconds, in the solvent.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
When you want to combine the finishing treatment
-with the incorporation of an .antistatic agent, the best results are obtained by mixing with the solvent 0.5 to 3 gr per kg of solvent of 1 Gagent .antistatique, the amount added varying with the activity of 1- 1-antistatic agent. Too high concentrations of these additives can cause the appearance of a haze on the surface of the treated objects which can adversely affect the appearance of the product, in particular when it comes to transparent products. Antistatic agents which are soluble in the above organic solvents at the temperature at which the treatment is carried out are preferably employed.
Preferred antistatic agents are compounds of the cationic type, for example quaternary ammonium compounds such as
<EMI ID = 6.1> pyridinium. Some of these antistatic agents can also cause a slight yellowing of the treated surface. This drawback can be avoided by carrying out the treatment in the presence of a chelating agent of the organic tertiary phosphite type. These compounds,
<EMI ID = 7.1>
can prevent oxidation of the antistatic agent and thereby prevent yellowing.
Stabilizers are added to the solvent at
1 bran of 2 to 20 gr / Kgr of solvent, The quantity varying with the stabilizing activity.
As the solvent, tetrahydrofuran alone is preferred for its higher volatility and lower retention. The drying of the treated articles is carried out advantageously by sweeping with
<EMI ID = 8.1>
for a total of 10 to 30 minutes.
The preferred stabilizers are absorbents of
<EMI ID = 9.1>
benzotriazole which form a real ultraviolet screen on the surface of plastic objects. Other stabilizers used alone or in combination are organic compounds of barium, cadmium, strontium and zinc, organic tin complexes
<EMI ID = 10.1>
chelating agents, such as organic phosphites and epoxy plasticizers with synergistic action.
Preferably used are stabilizing agents which are easily soluble in the recommended solvents.
An essential advantage of the processide in the action of the solvent which partially dissolves the roughness, softens the treated surface, thanks to which the additives are incorporated superficially, then retained by absorption in the resin, after evaporation of the solvent and can no longer be extracted from it. by Inaction of agents
