<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The subject of the invention is a drier with perforated drums, for drying materials which are impermeable or not very permeable to air, for example cellulose, namely a drier in which the drying air is sucked from the inside of the drums. openwork and is reintroduced from the outside, and the areas of the drums not covered by the material to be dried are masked.
Heretofore, impermeable or poorly breathable materials to be dried have generally been calendering dried, when they appear in cohesive bands. The calenders had large copper cylinders, over which the material to be dried passed, and which were heated from the inside by steam or hot water. The drying was also carried out in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
partly on conveyor belts permeable to air, the drying air then being directed either longitudinally or transversely through the material to be dried, or blown on either side with the aid of nozzles.
According to the invention, the drying of these materials is carried out on the aforementioned perforated drum dryers. The drying of the material, '' in these dryers, is all the more intense, as on the successive perforated drums, the drying air is blown. alternately on both sides of the material to be dried. According to the invention, the drying air blown for example by means of nozzles on the material to be dried, spread over the perforated drum., Is conducted at the edge of the perforated drums, inside them.
According to the invention, these drums can, for this purpose, be wider than the width of the material to be dried and have in their part extending beyond the edge of the material to be dried, holes through which the drying air, directed for example by means of nozzles on the surface of the material to be dried, passes inside the perforated drum where there is a depression. So that the edge of the material to be dried is not damaged by the suction, provision is made between the perforated part of the drum covered by the material to be dried, and the part of the drum protruding from the edge of the material to be dried and equal to - openwork.? a non-perforated part of the drum. The edge of the material to be dried rests on this non-perforated part of the drum.
The invention will be described in more detail below, with reference to the appended drawing showing, by way of example, one embodiment.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of a perforated drum dryer for drying an air impermeable material.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the dryer, and
Fig. 3 is a partial section of the perforated drum and the air supply to the dryer.
In enclosure 10 of the landing are mounted, one. next to the other, two perforated drums 11 and 12. The material to be dried 13
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is fed to the perforated drums, for example, by a conveyor belt 14. It passes over the underside of the drum 11, and thence over the top of the drum 12, to be subsequently discharged by the conveyor belt 15. The parts of the Openwork drums not covered by the material are masked by sheets 16 and 17. Each of the perforated drums cooperates with a fan. In the drawing, the fan 18 is associated with the perforated drum 12. It sucks in the air from the interior of the drum 12 and expels it on a heating coil 19 and through a pipe 20 in a set of nozzles 21, distributed over top of drum 12.
The air is blown through the nozzles over the surface of the material to be dried passing in front of them. On the side of the nozzles are mounted conduits 22, through which air can escape laterally to the drums. The device can be provided so that air escapes only from one side, or from both sides.
The drying air, coming out laterally from the duct 22, passes through the holes 23 provided in the perforated drum next to the edge of the material to be dried. For this purpose, the perforated drums are wider than the strip of material to be dried sent to the dryer. The drying air enters through the holes 23 inside the perforated drums, where the suction is maintained by the fan 18. The material to be dried is thus retained by suction on the perforated drum, while the air from drying is continuously brought inside the drum.
Fig. 3.shows in detail the arrangement of the edge of the perforated drum 17. The strip 13 of material to be dried passes exactly below the nozzles 21. Under the latter are holes 24 of the perforated drum, through which the suction is exerted on the strip 13. In the edge of the perforated drum are provided the holes 23, through which the air, leaving the ducts 22, passes inside the perforated drum 17. Between the holes 23 and 24 is provided an unperforated part 25 of the drum. The edge of the strip of material to be dried 13 rests on this non-perforated part. In this way, the drying air licks the edge of the material to be dried and does not sweep it away.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
directly, but must first travel a distance corresponding to the width of the unperforated part of the drum, before entering the latter.
It cannot thus damage the edge of the strip of material to be dried. Indeed, if the drying air passed directly over the edge of the web of material to be dried, it could tear off pieces.
The perforated drum dryer thus constructed also enables air impermeable materials to be dried quickly and efficiently.
