<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
En particulier la poussée axiale produite par l'effet mécanique de la rotation du disque R et la poussée radiale assurée par l'effet centrifuge agissant sur chaque particule isolée constitutive de la masse fluide' s'opposent l'une à l'autre et se substituent continuellement l'une à l'autre en produisant des poussées et des impulsions en sens opposés et à chaque poussée il se produit un dé- placement correspondant de la masse fluide et par suite un brassage progressif et continu;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
Alors que sur la fig.2, le plan moyen M du disque R coincide avec le plan contenant les sommets n nombre infini des sections droites polygonales en nombre égale- ment infini de la périphérie de ce disque, le plan moyen M'. du disqus R' de la fig.3 ne ooinoido pas avec le plan M, contenant les dits sommets, ces deux plans se coupant le long d'un diamètre T du disque R';
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

the present invention relates to improvements to centrifugal seals with powder material, metal shot or similar fluid, these seals being intended to ensure appropriate mixing of this powder material with regular heat exchange during the working of the seals in a manner to increase efficiency and throughput.
It is known that one of the most difficult problems to solve in the field of torsion joints constituted by a pulverulent material, a metal shot or the like, consists in the difficulty experienced in dissipating the heat generated by the friction of the various particles undergoing movement. relative mont and, in particular particles of the fluid used.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another important problem is constituted by the fact that for any relative modification observed between the driving torque and the resistive torque, the driving members and the driven members of the joint undergo a sliding or a relative sliding which continues until that we have found the conditions of equilibrium, this sliding giving rise to a reduction in the efficiency of the joint in, this sense that there is a reduction in the transmitted power.
The good behavior of the fluid with mechanical action inside the corresponding housing or receptacle also forms a problem because it must not leave the space reserved for it, which often goes as far as damaging the components. bearing provided in the coupling between the driving members and the driven members, while in addition there is obviously a loss and consequently a subsequent decrease in efficiency with the need to open the housing to reintroduce a com- addition of powder material or metal shot and this problem has not yet been satisfactorily resolved.
The object of the present invention is to resolve the problems indicated and consequently to eliminate all the inconveniences caused by the lack of solution provided to these problems to date, the solution proposed in accordance with the invention excluding any constructive complication. compared to the usual seals and even ensuring a simplification of their manufacture.
The subject of the invention is improvements to centrifugal seals containing a powdery material, metal shot or a similar fluid, these improvements being characterized by appropriate means driven by one of the driven and driving members of the seal, by hand, and likely to produce during displacement
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
relative to these organs a set of impulses or thrusts acting on the mass of the fluid acting mechanically so that this fluid not only is well stirred but also exhibits a high resistance to the displacement of its mass while limiting thus the slip appearing periodically between the driving and driven members.
These means are advantageously constituted by a wall which is suitably inclined with respect to the axis of rotation of the seal, which is partially or completely embedded in the mechanically acting fluid contained in the corresponding casing and is integral with a member '[holding or driven during the relative rotation of this 'wall' the way to produce the desired set of thrusts in the mass of the fluid and this not only thanks to the centrifugal action to which this fluid is subjected following the rotation of the corresponding housing, but also by virtue of the relative axial displacement, of the wall produced during the rotation by the inclination thereof.
According to one embodiment of such an improved seal, the inclined wall is formed by the rotor itself which is in the form of a disc, the median plane of which is suitably inclined with respect to the axis of rotation, the stress applied by this wall on the fluid, consisting for example of a pulverulent mass) being the same for both directions - the rotation of the seal which is thus found to be reversible
The peripheral side surface with approximately circular development of the inclined wall has in radial cross section a symmetrical shape or. dissymmetric, advantageously polygonal or triangular.
The angle at the top of the straight section! thus defined can be such that its bisector is in the mean plane of the wall or outside this plane, so
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
that it presents a symmetrical profile for this polygonal cross section in the first case, whereas in the second case the profile is asymmetrical.
, The plane containing the vertices in infinite number of these polygonal cross sections also in infinite number may be suitably offset with respect to the mean plane of the wall and, depending on whether the first considered plane has been offset in one direction or in the opposite direction by considering a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the seal, it is possible to increase or decrease the magnitude of the action that the peripheral lateral surface of the disc exerts on the fluid or powdery substance compared to the effect exerted by the surface corresponding main circular.
Maintaining the seal with respect to the mechanically acting fluid is obtained by a series of elastic rings mounted preferably concentrically inside the grooves or suitable coaxial seats arranged facing each other, both in the areas of the housing than in the corresponding zones of the rotor, this series of rings cooperating freely with these recesses so as to completely and in an increasingly energetic manner isolate the toroid-shaped chamber containing the fluid from the rest of the seal itself and, more exactly to the coupling between the lying shaft and the driven shaft, these rings expand under the effect of the centrifugal force during the working periods of the joint.
These characteristics and others will become apparent on reading the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings, this description and these drawings being given merely as an indication without thereby limiting the scope of the invention. On these drawings:

large ', scale the wall or inclined disc used in the: joint of' the fit.1, this figure making it possible to better understand the forces acting on the fluid and consequently the behavior of the joint following the inclination of the disc relative to the axis of rotation.
Figs. 3 and 4 are views, similar to that of FIG. 2, of two variants of the inclined disc, the polygonal side surface of which is no longer symmetrical.
If we refer more particularly to, fig.
1, the torsion joint A consists of a casing or envelope B consisting of two shells 10-12 secured to one another and having a substantially symmetrical, hollow and circular shape. The assembly of these two shells forms an internal chamber 14 for the fluid with mechanical action C constituted in the case considered by a shot, metallic with spherical particles for example, which allows a particularly advantageous use of the improved device which will be described. .
Chamber B has a similar shape to a saddle. torus thanks to the presence of the central coupling elements between the supporting and driven members of the seal A. The shell 10 carries a cage or sleeve D which is fixed to the central zone 16 of this shell and this so that the pipe 18 of this sleeve penetrates into the circular bores of the ring 20 formed, directly on said shell 10 along the axis thereof)
The pipe 18 has a longitudinal groove 22 engaged with a corresponding key 24 itself engaged with another longitudinal groove formed at the periphery of a journal forming the end 26 of the drive shaft F which,
once introduced by this end 26 into the tube 18, is angularly wedged thanks to the presence of the key 24. The central zone 28 of the other shell 12 facing the central zone of the first shell carries the plate 30
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the central opening 32 of which allows the portion 34 of the driven shaft G to pass, which can be connected in any suitable manner to any desired member, for example the machine to be driven.
-The part 34 of the driven shaft also passes into the bore of the ring 36 formed integrally at @ -'rieur of the shell 12, the end 38 of this driven shaft having an axial recess' 40 in which is housed the tubing '1b mentioned above.
The driven shaft G presents, in a part @ @trale with respect to the mean vertical plane of the joint A which practically coincides with front. ' the plane in which the shells.-, 10 12 are connected to one another and with the plane of rotation Y-Y, a hub H which carries the rotor R integral with this hub and, by. continued, of the driven shaft G.
This rotor comprises an approximately circular wall or disc, the mean plane of which is indicated by its trace M and which is suitably inclined with respect to the axis of rotation xx by forming an angle Of with the plane of rotation YY, this angle being obviously positive in the upper zone of the joint and negative in the lower zone or vice versa.
The inclined wall or disc R obviously has opposite circular surfaces 42-44 and a lateral peripheral surface with circular development, the edge of this wall has a symmetrical polygonal cross section in the case shown in Fig. 2 where this straight section is in isosceles triangle shape symmetrical with respect to the mean plane M of the inclined wall R.
In the areas 50 and 52 on the one hand facing each other on the ring 20 and on the hub H and the areas 54-56 on the other hand facing each other on this hub H and on the second ring 36 are formed recesses in look .. facing each other after mounting the seal A, these recesses having an annular shape around the axis xx.
In each of the pairs of sockets opposite: .is mounted elastic rings P, three in number in the case of
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
shown, both on one side and the other of the hub H and that, as has already been said and as will be explained below? to ensure better retention of the fluid C inside the chamber B, the shape of which is close to that of a torus. '. The seal A is completed by ball bearings Q and S mounted on the driven shaft G and resting on seats- formed between the ring 20 and the sleeve D on one side of the plane YY on the one hand and the other side of this plane between the second ring 36, and the closure plate 30 on the other hand.
These Q and S bearings can be load-bearing and at the same time absorb longitudinal thrusts.
It is obvious that the driven part, in the current case, the shaft G with the disc R and the elements which are integral with it, would roll crazy compared to the driving part, o.à.d. to 'the driving shaft F and to the members which are integral therewith such as E, D, 10 and 12 in the absence of any fluid C mechanical action.
The operation of the improved seal A clearly results not only from the description which has just been given, but also from the following considerations:
In the pulverulent metal mass C forming the fluid with mechanical action is partially embedded the inclined disc R following an annular peripheral zone which extends from the outer summit of the polygonal periphery 46 over a distance depending on the filling conditions of the chamber. B and its speed of rotation.
When the lying shaft begins to rotate around the axis xx with the various organs driven with it, the fluid with mechanical action C undergoes the centrifugal action due to this rotation, which determines a compression of this fluid in contact with the walls interiors of housing B and surfaces 42'iL 44, 46 of the fin or disc R.
The centrifugal action develops gradually with the increase in the rotational speed of the housing B
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
and can be represented by a parabolic type curve.
Given the inclination of an angle of the fin or disc R with respect to the vertical plane of rotation YY perpendicular to the axis XX, the movement of the surfaces 42-44 of the disc generates a system of axial thrusts acting alternately in two diametrically opposite directions, these equal and opposite thrusts being produced in the fluid C contained in the casing B and which is compressed in contact with the periphery of the casing under the effect of the centri # fuge action. -mentioned.
The effect of the axial thrusts in opposite directions on the fluid C produces a resistance on the part of the latter, resistance which increases with the centrifugal action opposing the axial displacement of the mass of fluid which would tend to settle. produce under the action of the pressure exerted by the inclined disc Ro One thus obtains a continuous translation in the fluid mass C in the circular direction and that under the action of the radial components compared to the axis of rotation of the joint of the components axial along the axis and tangential components,: The result of this system of components ensuring the mechanical movement of the fluid and consequently a perfect mixing of the latter.
In particular, the axial thrust produced by the mechanical effect of the rotation of the disc R and the radial thrust provided by the centrifugal effect acting on each isolated particle constituting the fluid mass' are opposed to each other and are continually substitute one for the other, producing thrusts and impulses in opposite directions, and with each thrust there is a corresponding displacement of the fluid mass and consequently a progressive and continuous stirring;
this causes an exchange of heat between the pulverulent layers in sliding contact with the surfaces of the disc R and of the casing B and the immediately adjacent layers which replace the layers occupying each pulse and for each revolution.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
previously considered position * Any partial transfer of the fluid mass caused by the pulsating thrust system generated within the complex mass of the fluid rotating with the crankcase at a single overall speed produces a periodic series of positive accelerations and negative which appreciably increases the resistive effect opposed to the rotation of the disc R inside the fluid mass, thus promoting the reaction which it opposes to the flexible motor and consequently the transmission of the motor torque from the housing D to this disc R and to the driven shaft G.
The interior levels 58-60 reached by the fluid mass from the left side and the right side respectively of the chamber 14 have a circular shape which is not the same for two levels, these levels being exentric with respect to the chamber 14. axis of rotation xx of the seal and the eccentric horizontal axes of these levels thus rotating around the axis xx at a speed equal to the difference between the speed of the casing and the speed of the rotor, the difference being equal to the sliding speed clean of the seal during the characteristic phase of starting the machine driven by the seal.
The difference between levels 58 and 60 is due to obvious reasons and, as can be seen by referring to fig. 1, the orientation taken by the disc R above the zone 62 of the fluid compresses the latter in the upper part, which causes a rise in the level while the opposite zone 64 is subjected to a vacuum and has a lower level , the opposite occurring for the lower opposite zones 66 and 68. The differences in level alternate for the diametrically opposed masses of the fluid and are equal and opposite and they occur at the frequency of the thrusts which the fluid mass receives below the pressure. action of the rotation of the disc R.
If we refer more particularly to the figures
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
2, 3 and 4, the shape taken by the peripheral lateral surface with substantially circular development of the oblique disc 46, 46 ', or 46 "will be noted. This lateral surface always has a straight section forming a polygon element, although that it may equally well be planar, for example, cylindrical, conical or of any other suitable shape.
While in fig.2, the mean plane M of the disk R coincides with the plane containing the vertices n infinite number of polygonal cross sections in also infinite number of the periphery of this disk, the mean plane M '. of the disqus R 'of fig.3 does not ooinoido with the plane M, containing the said vertices, these two planes intersecting along a diameter T of the disk R';
given that the plane M is offset by an angle ss forwards in the direction of the arrow Z, with respect to the plane M ', this inclination j9 is added to the proper inclination of the disc R and advances by enhancing it the effect of the inclined annular surface 47 With respect to the action of the surface 44 'of the disc body and, likewise, the action of the inclined annular surface 49 acts likewise with respect to the surface 42 'of the disc body.
In fig. 4, the mean plane M "of the disk R" does not coincide with the plane M2 of the vertices, the latter plane being offset by an angle / towards the rear in the direction of the arrow Z "with respect to the plane M". The inclination [gamma] is subtracted from the inclination [alpha] and, consequently, it retards the thrust exerted by the annular surface 51 with respect to that exerted by the surface 44 "of the body of the disc and it is the same of the annular surface 53 relative to the annular surface 42 "of the disc body.
The arrangement of the elastic rings P which are repelled by centrifugal force in contact with the outer surface of the recesses N is such that the labyrinth leading to the bearings Q S and, consequently, to the ends

It is clear that, without departing from the scope of the invention, numerous variations can be made to this seal in order to modify or improve it. For example, the inclined surface can be transferred to the hub and, likewise, suitable hollow parts can be provided, the shape of which is calculated to facilitate the subsequent smoothing of the powdery substance *
One will handle generally, the details and the variations of the invention can be modified freely according to the intended applications and that without departing from the field of the invention.
