<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

It is known that, in ordinary spectacle frames provided with articulated or foldable branches, an effort is made to give these branches a certain elasticity by making them partly or entirely from an elastic material. This not only limits the choice of materials that can be used in the manufacture of these frames, but more often than not necessitates the intervention of manufacturing operations which are both complicated and expensive.
It has been found that it is possible to manufacture frames provided with branches which are completely rigid or made rigid while having the necessary mounting elasticity, by connecting each branch to the frame via a hinge whose opening, from a certain angle, is thwarted by an elastic member of the hinge, so that the separation of the branches, from this certain angle, is effected against the request of an elastic force.
Consequently, the invention relates to a spectacle frame with articulated or folding arms, characterized in that each branch, even if it is substantially rigid or made rigid, is connected to the frame by means of a hinge. constituted by two elements pivoting around a common axis, one of these elements being provided with an organ so as to bear and slide on a surface belonging to the other element, this surface being profiled with so as to elastically oppose the sliding of the projecting member and, therefore, to make the separation of the branch from the frame elastic, but only from a determined opening angle.
According to one of the preferred embodiments of the invention, one of the elements of the hinge is terminated by a profiled face forming a cam and cooperating with an elastic pusher housed in the other element, the boss of the cam being eccentric relative to the pivot. of the hinge while having at least one so-called "neutral" position which corresponds to the angle of separation normally expected, as well as a part situated after said position and which presents an increasing eccentricity by allowing the branches to be further separated against the stress of the elastic member of the pusher.
Preferably, the pusher is constituted by a single ball (or a roller) subjected to the bias of a helical compression spring, the assembly being housed and guided in a suitable cavity formed in one of the elements of the hinge.
Another object of the invention is to make the rebating of the branches automatic and stable in order to close them. For this purpose, the cam may include, between said neutral position and the closed position of the branches, a boss with decreasing eccentricity so that after having passed the dead center, the pusher is automatically forced to pass over this boss, which brings the corresponding branch to its folded position.
Other objects of the invention will emerge from the following description, in which reference will be made to certain possible embodiments shown in the accompanying drawing, by way of example.
La'figure 1 shows, in section, a detail of a spectacle branch connected to the central part of the frame according to the invention.
Figure 2 shows the same detail in side view.
FIG. 3 shows, in plan, the frame, the arms of which are in neutral (solid lines) and in a position of elastic separation (broken lines).
Figure 4 shows, in section, the attachment of a hinge element

on the frame, using a threaded axle and a locking screw.
FIGS. 5 and 6 show, respectively, in longitudinal section and in transverse section, a variant of the fixing device of FIG. 4.
The spectacle frame is constituted by a main or front part 1 and by two rigid branches 2. Each of these branches is connected to the front piece 1 by means of a hinge formed by two elements 3, 4 pivoting around it. a pin 5 and fixed respectively to the front part and to the branches using rivets 6, 6 '. Element 3 is terminated by a profiled face comprising parts 8, 9, 10 and 11, in the form of cams intended to cooperate with a plunger consisting of a ball 12 which is biased by a spring 13, the ball 12 and the spring 13 being housed and guided in a cavity 14 formed in the other element 4 of the hinge.
The profiled part 10 corresponds to a so-called "neutral" position which determines the normal opening position of the corresponding branch, that is to say the position shown in solid lines in FIGS. 1 and 3. Beyond this position, the profiled part 11 of the cam has an increasing eccentricity towards the outside, while the part 9 presents a decreasing eccentricity towards the inside.
Thus, starting from the normal open position, indicated in solid lines in Figures 1 and 3, the branches 2 can be biased so as to move further apart from each other, until reaching a position 2 ', but it is evident that due to the shape of the profile 11, the pusher resiliently opposes this additional spacing and tends to bring the corresponding branch towards the neutral position at 10, so that the branches of the frame behave between positions 2, 2 ', as if they had their own elasticity.
On the other hand, if the branch, from the dead center 10, is moved inwards, the ball 12, as soon as it has passed the dead center 10, is urged by the spring 13 so as to automatically roll on the par - tie 9 of the cam until it occupies a position corresponding to a second dead point 8.
Of course, we can intervene the position of the two hinge elements 3, 4 by placing the element 3 on the branch (instead of placing it on the front piece) and the element 4 on the front piece (instead of place it on the branch).
In addition, the hinge element 3 (or 4), intended to be fixed to the front piece, can be made integral with the latter by means of a threaded rod 15 which is an integral part thereof and is screwed into a threaded sleeve 16 fixed in the front piece 1, this rod 15 being immobilized in the desired position by means of a locking screw 17 which also screws into the sleeve 16 but perpendicular to the rod 15 ( FIG. 4) where by means of a locking screw 18 which tends to bring the cheeks 19, 20 closer to a boss formed on the bush 20 and having a longitudinal slot 21 (FIGS. 5 and 6).
If the threaded rods 15, which are located on either side of the front part 1, are arranged symmetrically on a common transverse axis xx contained in the plane of this front part, it is obvious that this plane can be oriented. (that is to say inclined more or less) relative to the plane in which the branches are located, which has the advantage of allowing the frame to be adjusted to the shape of the user's head.
Naturally, this frame can be produced in forms other than those described, without however departing from the scope of the invention.

This is how the profile of the cam can be limited to the only part comprised between the normal opening position (dead center 10) and the maximum spacing position the push button Can be made up of an element: single elastic for example by a spring steel wire arranged so as to be able to cooperate with the cam wire only along the aforesaid active part.
