<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
passage en regard duquel est disposée au moins une adduction d'air pour assumer le transformation totale du CO en C02 ; d'un échangeur thermi- que de nature et de modèle quelconques appropriées à l'application envi- sagée, d'une cheminée de départ des gaz, suies et fumées;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The invention relates essentially to the rational combustion of plant fuels with an abnormally high water content, for example the combustion of bagasse, palm stems, wet wood, drèohe and other similar combustible plant materials. It is practically not possible to burn these fuels in ordinary stoves by the traditional means. It is essential, in the current technique of hearths, to first subject these materials to a preliminary operation of at least partial drying. This operation would require a relatively large installation and would lead to an excessive cost of the fuel. It is for this reason that, practically, in all cases, these materials are not used despite the great fuel needs.
This is particularly the case in all industrial installations where fa-. brication are constituted by a plant material containing a large percentage of water, especially in industries of extraction from plant products.
The invention relates to a simple process for burning such combustible vegetable matter without prior drying and the invention also extends to devices and installations capable of applying this process. This essentially consists in first causing incomplete combustion by placing the fuel in an insufficiently oxidized atmosphere so as to produce a large quantity of carbon monoxide, then in bringing it away from the combustion. mass of fuel in the presence of fresh air so as to ensure complete combustion and to maintain a temperature such that the ashes always remain in the pulverulent state.
This process is made essentially practical, flexible and relatively very easy to adjust by placing the mass of fuel in the presence of gas and fumes taken at the outlet, this adduction being done under controlled pressure, this control determining the adjustment of the combustion, respectively the adjustment of the formation of carbon monoxide.
This process is therefore independent of those which ensure the combustion of excess carbon monoxide by a secondary air supply or else processes in which the gases, fumes and soot are brought back in the presence of the mass of fuels in the primary furnace in order to produce vigorous stirring in the presence of air in order to ensure complete combustion of the carbon monoxide thus recovered.
In accordance with the present process, the combustion of the mass of vegetable fuel with a high water content in the first furnace thus transformed into a pre-furnace is deliberately thwarted by the addition of gas and fumes taken at the outlet and introduced under a duly re-pressure. - glée.
The carbon monoxide thus produced in the fore-hearth is brought into an independent room where it is placed in the presence of air, respectively oxygen in sufficient quantity for total combustion.
By this new process, the mass of fuel in the fore-hearth undergoes, in a way, dehydration accompanied by incomplete combustion, which leads to the fire proper, independent of the fore-hearth. , carbon monoxide in the presence of steam and fresh air, a favorable condition for total combustion, the adjustment of the various adductions being obviously provided for this purpose.
In a preferred embodiment, the device or installation making it possible to rationally apply such a method consists in the juxtaposition of a fore-hearth on the grids of which is loaded the mass of vegetable fuel; water, from a contiguous combustion chamber in direct relation with said fore-hearth by at least one

passage opposite which is disposed at least one air supply to assume the total transformation of CO into C02; a heat exchanger of any type and model appropriate to the envisioned application, a gas, soot and smoke outlet chimney;
from a gas outlet to said chimney and opening, on the other hand, into the fore-hearth above the grids and at least one device for pressurizing said gas outlet.
An exemplary embodiment is described in more detail below with reference to the appended drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a diagram of the process which is the subject of the invention as briefly as possible; FIG. 2 represents an installation in longitudinal section; Figure 3 is a plan view; FIG. 4 is a half front view and a half section taken along the line IV-IV of FIG. 2.
As shown diagrammatically in FIG. 1, the typical installation corresponding to the successive phases characterizing the process of the invention will include at least one fore-hearth 1, a combustion chamber 2, between the two at least one passage 3 for the gases and vapors. resulting from the precombustion in the fore-hearth 1, at least one secondary air inlet 4, a heat exchanger 5, a chimney 6 for the departure of gases, soot and smoke, at least one gas outlet 7 opening in the fore-hearth 1 and at least one device 8 for pressurizing said gas outlet.
In the example of FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, the installation applying the method is carried out as follows: the fore-hearth 1 is contiguous to the combustion chamber proper 2. these two lqcaux being placed in communication, for example, through a window 3. The fore-hearth 1 has grilles 9 and is packaged in substance like an ordinary hearth with inspection door 10, change opening 11, ash door 12 and all the arrangements and accessories specific to the technique of fireplaces in general.
In the combustion chamber 2 obliquely open two secondary air inlets 4 issuing from a common duct 13 connected to the duct 14 connected to the outlet of a motor-fan unit 15 for blowing air. air and comprising, for example, a "control" valve for adjusting the air inlet. The upper part of the combustion chamber 2 is in connection with the heat exchanger proper constituted, in this case, by a tubular boiler 2 in communication with the chimney 6. From said chimney 6 leaves a duct 7 forming an outlet. gas and smoke leading to the inlet of a fan motor unit ¯8 for recycling the fumes, this group being, for example, fitted with a "controlled" valve in order to regulate the intake.
The output of this motor-fan unit 8 is extended by the ducts 16-17 directed on either side of the furnace proper and joined together facing the front part of the furnace by a transverse duct 18. The two lateral branches 16- 17 and the front duct 18, depart from the branches 19 opening into the fore-hearth 1 above the grids 9.
As explained above, the process forming one of the characteristics of the invention develops as follows: the solid fuel with a very high water content is placed on the grids 9 either by falling by gravity through the inlet 11, or by being introduced by any means or automatically by the side sight 10. This material is ignited and burns imperfectly, releasing a large quantity of CO and water vapor; these gases and vapor pass through window 3 into the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
combustion 2 and encounter the fresh air streams added by pipes 4 and 13 and blown in by the motor-fan unit 15.
The CO2 burns it completely, thus completing the combustion and all the combustion residues in this chamber 2 are discharged through the heat exchanger 5 to reach the chimney 6. In a controlled manner, a part of these gases and fumes is suitably drawn in by the motor-fan unit 8 via the outlet 1 and returned to the fore-hearth 1 above the grilles where they are judiciously distributed due to the distribution of the ducts 19 coming from the ducts 16-17- 18. One thus obtains that, in the fore-hearth 1, the atmosphere is as little oxidizing as possible and, in any case, within limits specific to the process of the invention and determined by the need for training. as intense as possible of CO sent to the combustion chamber itself 2.
By adjusting the flow rate of the motor-fan unit 8, it is possible to adjust the pre-combustion phase in the fore-hearth 1 very correctly and, by adjusting the motor-fan group 15, it is possible very judiciously adjust the addition of air or fresh oxygen in the combustion chamber 2 and, consequently, also adjust the oxidation of the CO adduct in order to ensure complete combustion.
This installation is obviously given only by way of example without any limiting character of any kind.
The two rooms forming, respectively, the fore-hearth and the combustion chamber, need not necessarily be contiguous. Their relative position and their respective dimensions are essentially variable depending on the application case and the nature of the solid fuel and the water contents to be taken into consideration. Likewise, the heat exchanger can in principle be any and, in any case, of any type in use with stoves using traditional fuels.
The means for controlling and adjusting the admission of gases into the fore-hearth are also essentially variable and it is easily possible to apply means capable of ensuring this adjustment automatically, the flow rate of the pressurizing device or of pulsation being, for example, influenced by the temperature or the hygrometric degree or the analysis of the atmosphere of said room or even in any other way.
The invention extends both to the process described above as well as to any device and any installation generally of any kind capable of applying it, more particularly for burning solid fuels of vegetable origin having a water content. relatively very high.
