DESCRIPTION.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Le siège de valve 10 est maintenu dans une position fixe à l'inté- rieur de l'alésage 9, comme on le voit sur le dessin, au moyen d'un écrou 16, qui peut être fendu en travers de sa face extérieure de manière qu'on puisse le visser à l'aide d'un tournevis dans la portion 1 du carter pour l'appliquer contre le siège de valve ; écrou 16 comporte un alésage central 18 communiquant directement avec l'alésage 13.Il est muni, du côté de la chambre 4, d'une nervure annulaire 19 disposée coaxialement par rapport à l'écrou; une extrémité d'un filtre cylindrique 20 à air, disposé dans la chambre 4, est appliquée d'une manière étanche contre la nervure 19 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Le fluide sous pression comprimé dans le réservoir s'écoule par l'orifice 5 dans la chambre 4 et traverse le filtre 20, le canal 24 et les alésages 18 et 13 pour arriver dans la zone de la valve 26 qui est entourée par la nervure 12;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

COMPRESSOR REGULATOR.
The present invention relates to regulators and more particularly to regulators controlled by a fluid pressure and serving to regulate the quantity of pressurized fluid delivered by air or gas compressors or by similar devices.
The main object of the invention is to provide a regulator which is of a relatively simple construction, which has a good efficiency and whose cost price is relatively low.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the more detailed description which follows.
In the accompanying drawing, the single figure is an elevational view, partly cut away and partly sketched, of a compressor regulator according to the invention.
DESCRIPTION.
As can be seen in the drawing, the regulator according to the invention comprises a body in two parts 1 and 2; part 1 comprises two chambers 3 and 4 separated by a partition 9a and two dia- metrically opposed pipe connections, in other words two orifices, 5 and 6 which communicate chamber 4 with the outside. One or the other of the fittings 5 and 6 can be connected to a reservoir or receiver (not shown), in which the fluid is compressed by a compressor (not shown), while the other is closed by a plug. orifice. The portion 1 of the body is also provided with two other diametrically opposed connectors or orifices 7 and 8, which communicate the chamber 3 with the outside.
One of the connections 7 and 8 can be connected to a compressor relief device (not shown
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tee), which is associated with the compressor, while the other connection is closed.
The discharge device can be controlled by the regulator, in a well known manner, to allow the compressor to maintain a pressure in a receiver between a predetermined minimum and a maximum also predetermined. When the pressure of the fluid has been reduced in the receiver to the predetermined minimum, the regulator responds to this pressure to act on the discharge device, so that the latter allows the compressor to operate until such time as the pressure in the receiver reaches the predetermined maximum, the regulator then responds to this maximum in order to act on the discharge device, so that the latter cuts off the flow of the compressor and allows the latter to run empty without compressing the fluid in the receiver.
The wall 9a has a bore 9 connecting the chambers 3 and 4; a cylindrical member 10 forming a valve seat is mounted in this bore; it comprises at one end a shoulder 11 resting against the partition 9a on the side adjacent to the chamber 4, and at the other end an annular rib 12 forming a seat and protruding into the chamber 3. The valve seat -10 has an axial bore 13 which establishes communication between the chambers 3 and 4. A seal 15 is arranged in an annular cavity of the shoulder 11, so as to be in sealed contact with the seat 10. on the one hand and with the partition 9a on the other hand; good airtightness is thus obtained between these last two outlets.
The valve seat 10 is held in a fixed position inside the bore 9, as seen in the drawing, by means of a nut 16, which can be slotted across its outer face. so that it can be screwed with a screwdriver into portion 1 of the housing to apply it against the valve seat; nut 16 comprises a central bore 18 communicating directly with the bore 13. It is provided, on the side of the chamber 4, with an annular rib 19 disposed coaxially with respect to the nut; one end of a cylindrical air filter 20, disposed in the chamber 4, is applied in a sealed manner against the rib 19;
the other end of this filter is applied in a sealed manner against an annular rib 21 forming an integral part of a closure cap 22, which is screwed by means of a thread 23 into the end of the portion 1 of the housing, opposite the valve seat 10. A channel 24 is provided in the filter 20; it communicates directly with the bores 18 and 13 and is aligned with them.
An annular valve guide or sleeve 25 is forcibly inserted into a bore of the housing and is in contact with the partition 9a; the interior of this sleeve opens onto chamber 3; the sleeve surrounds the rib 12 of the valve seat 10 and is disposed coaxially with this rib.
A disc valve 26, capable of pressing in a sealed manner against the rib 12 in its normal position, the position in which the valve is shown in the drawing, is mounted in the sleeve 25; this valve has a diameter smaller than the internal diameter of the guide 25, so as to provide a certain clearance between the valve and the guide; this set is determined so as to allow the pressurized fluid to flow with a relatively low determined flow rate when the valve is not applied against its seat 12
Portion 2 of the body is connected by threads 27 to the end of part 1 of the body, on the side opposite to that where the closure cap 22 is located.
It has a cylindrical chamber 28 extending from its outer end to an end wall 48 located at its inner end. The end wall 48 is disposed in the chamber 3 and has a bore 47 whose diameter is smaller than that of the chamber 28; this bore is coaxial with respect to chamber 28 and to valve guide 25; bedroom 28 must be communicated with bedroom 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A valve seat 29 is inserted into the bore 47 of the end wall 48; it comprises at one end a shoulder 30, which is pressed against this end wall, on the side adjacent to the chamber 28, and at its other end an annular rib 31 disposed in the chamber 3 coaxially with respect to the rib 12 but oriented in the opposite direction relative to the latter.
The rib 31 ensures a tight closure in cooperation with the valve 26, on the side opposite to that of the valve seat 10, for a certain position of this valve which will be defined a little later; the rib 31 has a diameter slightly greater than that of the rib 12 of the valve seat 10; it should be noted that the valve 26 is disposed between the two ribs 12 and 31 and that these are spaced from each other by a distance slightly greater than the thickness of the valve. An annular cavity 32 extending over the end of the shoulder 30 pressed against the end wall 48 contains a seal 33 in sealing contact with this shoulder and this wall.
The valve seat 29 is further provided with a bore 34 coaxial with the rib 31 and connecting the chamber
28 to the portion of the chamber 3 which is surrounded by this rib; headquarters
29 is held in the position shown in the drawing by a nut
35, which can be split so that it can be screwed with a screwdriver into the thread 36 of the wall of the chamber 28 and brought into contact with the valve seat 29.
A plunger 37 disposed in chamber 28, coaxially with bore 34, has at one end a conical head 38 which projects through 1.1 bore 34, with its smaller end resting against the center. of the disc valve 26. The maximum diameter of the conical head 38 is slightly smaller than the diameter of the bore 34, so that this head can slide freely in this bore and the pressurized fluid can pass from the chamber. 3 in chamber 28 around the diver's head. The main body of this plunger has a diameter less than the maximum diameter of the head 38, so as to form a shoulder 49 near the head; an annular spring seat 39 surrounds the plunger and rests against this shoulder 49.
A spring 40 surrounding the plunger 37 and urging the valve 26 towards its normal position bears at one end against the spring seat 39, while its other end extends into a cavity 41 of a adjusting nut 42 and rests against the base of this cavity, the latter is open on the chamber 28 of the portion 2 of the body. The adjusting nut 42 is connected to the portion 2 of the body, in an adjustable manner, by a thread 43 engaged in an internal thread of the wall of the chamber 28; this nut thus makes it possible to regulate the pressure of the spring 40 against the seat 39 and the plunger 37.
The part of the plunger, on the side opposite to the head 38, is slidably mounted, so as to be guided, in a bore 44 of the nut 42; this bore, as well as the chambers 41 and 28, are open to the air through 1-'orifice 46 provided in one nut 42.
A locking nut 45 is screwed onto the thread 43 so as to rest against the end of the portion 2 of the housing and to lock. The adjustment nut 42 on the housing in the chosen adjustment position.
A factory-made mounting bracket 50 with portion 1 of the body may be provided to mount the regulator at any location deemed convenient.
OPERATION. -
It is assumed that the different parts of the compressor regulator according to the invention are in the respective positions shown in the drawing, that the port 5 is connected to a reservoir (not shown) to receive the pressurized fluid. of a compressor (not shown) while the port 6 is closed by a plug (not shown), one of the ports 7 and 8 is closed while the other is connected to a discharge device ( not shown) associated with the compressor, and that the latter operates to compress fluid in this reservoir.
It is also assumed that the compression of the spring 40 has been adjusted by means of the nut 42.,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in the manner described above, so that the plunger 37 and its conical head 38 exert on the valve 26 a force capable of maintaining it in its normal position, in contact with the rib 12, for all pressures of fluid less than a predetermined maximum and acting on the other face of the valve 26, in the zone surrounded by this rib,
The pressurized fluid compressed in the reservoir flows through the orifice 5 into the chamber 4 and passes through the filter 20, the channel 24 and the bores 18 and 13 to arrive in the area of the valve 26 which is surrounded by the rib 12;
this fluid exerts on this valve a force opposite to that exerted by the regulating spring 40. When the pressure of the fluid in the reservoir has reached the predetermined maximum mentioned above, this pressure acting on the surface of the valve 26 surrounded by the rib 12 overcomes the force opposed by spring 40 and moves valve 26 away from its normal position, that is to say from its seat constituted by rib 12.
This distance of the valve 26 relative to the rib 12 exposes the entire surface of the valve to the pressure of the fluid arriving inside this rib; as a result of the throttling effect produced by the clearance between the valve 26 and its guide 25, the force exerted by this fluid on the upper face of the valve exceeds that of the spring 40, and as a result the valve moves rapidly to a discharge position where it is pressed against rib 31. With valve 26 in its discharge position, chamber 3, which was previously open to free air through the bore 34, chamber 28, cavity 41 and channel 46,
is no longer in communication with $ 1 atmosphere and receives the pressurized fluid, arriving from the side of the valve where the rib 12 is located and passing through the clearance provided between the valve and its guide 25; the entire surface of the valve, with the exception of the part surrounded by the rib 31, is exposed to a pressure equal to the predetermined maximum.
Since the rib 31 surrounds a larger area of the valve 26 than the rib 12, a greater force is exerted by the fluid on this valve, when the latter has moved to come into contact with the rib 31. , to oppose the action of the spring 40, only when the valve was in contact with the rib 12; thanks to this, the valve 26 remains positively in its discharge position, until the moment when the pressure of the fluid in the reservoir and the chamber 3 has then reached, decreasing a predetermined value lower than the maximum mentioned above, as we will explain it a little later.
The valve 26 being in its discharge position, the fluid at the pressure of the reservoir flows from the chamber 3 into the discharge device of the compressor, through the orifice 7, and actuates this device so as to stop the flow compressor in a well-known manner.
As indicated above, the diameter of the rib 31 is slightly greater than that of the rib 12 and the entire surface of the valve 26, except for the portion surrounded by the rib 31, is exposed to the surface. tank pressure when this valve is in its discharge position. Consequently, the area of the valve 26, which is subjected to the pressure of the reservoir when this valve is in the discharging position, is equivalent to the area surrounded by the rib 31, which area is larger than that surrounded by the rib 12 and subjected to the pressure of the reservoir when the valve is in the normal position.
Consequently, the pressure of the fluid prevailing in the reservoir and acting on the surface of the valve 26, outside the zone surrounded by the rib 31, when this valve is in the discharge position, must be reduced to the point of to some predetermined minimum, depending in part on the area surrounded by the rib 31, so that the force of the spring 40 can return the valve to its normal position overcoming the opposite pressure of the fluid.
We will now assume that the pressure of the fluid in the

servoir has been reduced to the predetermined minimum. This decrease causes a similar decrease in the pressure in the chamber 3 and therefore allows the force of the spring 40 to act on the valve 26 to move it away from the rib 31.
The clearance provided between the wall of the bore 34 and the head 38 disposed in this bore is such that, when the valve 26 moves away from the rib 31, the pressure of the fluid in the chamber 3 and in the connected discharge line at the oririce 7 is quickly and momentarily equalized on the opposite faces of the valve and allows the spring 40 to bring the valve abruptly to its normal position, that is to say in contact with the rib 12 , which cuts off the flow of pressurized fluid from the reservoir to chamber 3.
The chamber 3 is no longer in communication with the reservoir, the pressure of the fluid in this chamber and in the discharge device is dissolved in the atmosphere by passing around the head 38 in the bore.
34; the discharge device can then again allow the compressor to compress fluid in the reservoir.
At the instant when the valve 26 leaves contact with the rib 31 and comes into contact with the rib 12, and the pressure in the chamber 3 becomes equal to atmospheric pressure, the force resulting from the pressure acting on the valve 26, inside the rib 12, and opposing that of the spring 40, is less than that which opposes this spring when the valve is in contact with the seat
31; the valve 26 therefore remains positively in contact with the rib 12 until the pressure in the reservoir rises again, thanks to the compressor, to the predetermined maximum for which the regulator acts again to stop the operation of the compressor as already explained.
It can be seen from the foregoing that the compressor regulator automatically controls the operation of the latter, so as to maintain the pressure of the fluid in the reservoir between a predetermined minimum and a maximum.
It is now clear that the present invention realizes a new relatively simple and inexpensive regulator which is capable, through a relief device, of automatically controlling the operation of a compressor and therefore the pressure of the fluid in it. a reservoir, so as to maintain this pressure between a predetermined maximum and a minimum.
CLAIMS. the compressor regulator characterized by the fact that it comprises a casing comprising two chambers, one of which is constantly supplied with pressurized fluid, a valve disposed in the other chamber and controlling the communication between the two chambers, thus between the second chamber and the atmosphere, and an elastic pressure means acting on the valve so as to push it towards a normal position in which it closes the communication between the chambers and opens the second chamber to the 'free air, this valve being capable, when subjected to a predetermined maximum pressure prevailing in the first chamber, of moving to a second position, overcoming said elastic means,
to open the communication between the two chambers and to close the communication between the second chamber and the open air.
