<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

AUTOMATIC PROGRESSIVE TRANSMISSION MECHANISM.
The present invention relates to a mechanism for the continuous transmission of the rotational movement of the crankshaft, driven by the movement of the piston of an engine or similar machine, to the universal joint and the following universal shafts, eliminating couplings and speed change known hitherto. The new transmission mechanism can be mounted between motor and cardan shaft of any type of vehicle on which it provides considerable service, as has been verified in practice on vehicles of the most diverse constructions, and where it has also been found that, due to the new characteristics according to the invention, the engine torque was constant and the load differences on the other hand were different and continuously variable.
The new device operates automatically and without any intermediate member, only the power developed by the driving shaft and the resistance offered by the driven shaft coming into play, the relative speeds of the two shafts not having to be taken into account at all. The new transmission mechanism replaces, as has already been said, the coupling and the gearshift, but can also serve, provided it is properly fitted, as a replacement for the regulating mechanism, as a brake, as a dynamometer, as power take-off device on tractors, etc.
The new transmission mechanism operates automatically and mechanically without friction and with great precision as has been demonstrated on models and practically also on automobiles.
The construction of the mechanism according to the invention is in itself extremely simple and is based on mechanical principles whose practical application in this technique and for uses such as those described below is absolutely new.
By way of non-limiting example, the drawing shows an exemplary embodiment of a mechanism according to the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the example shown in FIG. 1, the motor or input shaft 1 has the shape of a T and is connected in any manner, known per se, with the drive shaft of the motor. The two transverse arms of the input shaft forming a T carry the rings or bushings 2 and 3 which form a universal joint.
The inner ring 2, the smaller one, drives a short intermediate shaft 4 connected in a suitable manner on which in its turn is threaded in the middle part the ring 7 mounted loose and which supports at its other end the pinion 5 (mounted fixed on the shaft 4) of an epicyclic transmission. The larger outer ring 3 sets and maintains the flywheel 6 in motion, the coupling being achieved by two pins provided inside the flywheel which they connect with the indicated ring 3.
The flywheel 6 is carried by a projecting ring which is in one piece with said flywheel and serves as its journal, by means of a roller bearing; this is housed in a part 8 serving as a bridge, which forms, with the bolts 17 and 18 and the tire 9 surrounding the flywheel, the cardanic suspension of said flywheel which in this way is driven in rotation around its axis of symmetry by the largest ring 3 and the motor shaft 1, said flywheel being able to take in space any desired position by oscillating around the axes of pins 17 and 16, flywheel whose center of gravity alone is fixed.
On the face of said flywheel 6 opposite to the annular collar fixed to it, is screwed in a suitable manner a hollow truncated cone 10 in the shape of a funnel, from the smallest hole from which comes out, with sufficient clearance, the shaft 4 on which is threaded the ring 7. Thanks to this arrangement and this assembly according to the invention, the movement of. flywheel 6 already indicated ensures, in the cardan shaft suspension indicated, a free gyroscopic movement, the technical use of which in this form is, in itself, absolutely new.
The bevel gear 5 of the epioycloldal train which is, as already said, keyed to the intermediate shaft 4, or which is fixed to it in some way, is constantly in engagement with an inner conical ring gear 11 which , in turn is mounted in a head 12. The indicated head is mounted on a shaft 13 ending in the shape of a mushroom through which the transmission of force takes place to the universal joint of the vehicle; it is in turn provided internally with a cylindrical bronze piece 14 which is pierced with a strongly inclined bore and in which is freely threaded the free end of the intermediate shaft 4, so as to ensure the necessary engagement of pinion 5 and of the internal conical ring gear-11.
The cylindrical bronze piece 14 housed in a ball bearing, which ensures easy rotational movement in the head 12, due to the force arising from the rotational movement of the bevel pinion 5 on the inner wall of the ring gear 11.
The small intermediate shaft 4 therefore rotates by resting, at one end, on the small inner ring 2 of the universal joint and, at the other end, in the bronze part 14.
Finally, as regards the housing 15, it is purely and simply a kind of casing which surrounds the mechanism and which gives it its structural rigidity and its stability. In this housing are mounted the ball bearing of the input shaft 1 as well as the ball bearing of the output shaft 13 and the spindle 16 of the tire 9 of the cardan suspension.
From the above, it follows that the geometric axes of the motor shaft 1 forming a T, of the output shaft 13 to be driven, of the pins of the cardan joint 2 and 3, as well as the pins 17 and 18 of the gimbal suspension are concurrent at a point inside the gimbal joint; on axis 1 and at the geometric center of the flywheel 6.
The operation of the transmission mechanism according to the invention in the form which has just been described is as follows:
If it is assumed that a machine, for example an internal combustion engine, develops little power, and therefore turns at low speed of rotation, the flywheel 6 also turns slowly, at a speed corresponding to that of the motor shaft, of the made of this reduced power development and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
At this low speed of rotation, the flywheel 6 cannot prevent the pinion 5 from rolling, that is to say, from turning empty, on the internal teeth of the crown 11; the ring gear 11 connected with the output shaft 13 and, in this way, also with the cardan and the shaft of the vehicle, therefore remains stationary and consequently the whole vehicle.
If then, under the same experimental conditions, the running of the motor is accelerated, if therefore, consequently, a practically usable power is developed, then the speed of rotation of the flywheel 6 increases at the same time as the speed increases. running of the engine; due to this increase in speed of rotation, the flywheel acquires a certain stability, as happens in the case of the movement of a top with the oscillations of its geometrical axis in the case of a decreasing speed and its stability during its rapid movement.
Due to this increase in speed of rotation the flywheel acquires a certain stability and it opposes the disturbing force arising during the movement of the pinion on the inner ring gear, which prevents and stops the rolling and the mad rotation of the pinion on the ring gear, and has the result of immobilizing this pinion in the teeth of the ring gear 11, to drive the latter, therefore, in rotation, and, naturally, at the same time, the cardan shaft and the wheels of the vehicle.
This regulating and controlling force depends on the speed of the motor shaft as it results from the description above; but it is also influenced by the resistance that the vehicle opposes through the output shaft.
The ratio of the rotational speeds of the input shaft and the output shaft is permanently controlled, constant, progressive and automatic. The number of gear ratios is practically extremely high, one can even say almost infinite, and it should be noted that the gear change takes place automatically and continuously each time.
The mechanism which has just been described is in itself non-reversible, i.e. therefore the input shaft can drive the output shaft in the manner indicated but the reverse is never possible .
In the embodiment shown in Figure 2 and which constitutes an improvement to the flywheel transmission device, which has just been described, the annular projection, in one piece with the flywheel 6 and on which said flywheel in the part 8 serving as a bridge, is disposed on the opposite side of this flywheel, so that said annular projection can come from a single piece foundry with the hollow truncated cone 10; this conical part 10 in the form of a funnel is modified so that it can support the roller bearing of the bridge 8; it is thus possible to rotate the flywheel 6 carried by the cone, while also ensuring the functions previously fulfilled by the truncated cone 10.
In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 3, a radical simplification has been made to the entire steering wheel transmission system. The modification resides in that, while retaining the other elements indicated on plates 1 and 2, the cardan suspension constituted by elements 8, 9, 16 and 17 of the steering wheel 6 has been removed, and that the latter is supported by the universal joint 3 and the input shaft 1. The role played by the cone-shaped shell 10 is limited in this case to the action shown in Figure 1, that is to say to transmit by the ring 7 to the flywheel 6 all the position variations undergone by the short intermediate shaft 4 during the displacement of the bevel pinion 5 in the toothed ring 11.
In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 4, another modification of the initial flywheel mechanism is provided, an embodiment in which the simplification according to FIG. 3 has been retained, but where a cylindrical planetary gear has been mounted on the part of the axis directed towards the exit.
In this exemplary embodiment, the shaft is extended and penetrates into the head 12 'where it rests on ball bearings. On the far side
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The end of the shaft is keyed, or otherwise fixed, a pinion 19 which acts on the three planet wheels 20, which in turn engage with the cylindrical internal teeth of the annular part 11 ". This part is fixed. suitably to the output shaft 13 '. The planet carrier 18 is provided with a projecting collar in the form of an eccentric bush supporting the ring 7'. This ring 7 'acts on the cone 10 in the form of a funnel of steering wheel 6, under the conditions indicated above.
In the exemplary embodiment of the transmission mechanism according to the invention shown on plate 5, there is provided a simplification residing in the fact that in this type, the inner ring gear is omitted and that only d 'a piece with external teeth, the output shaft 23 constitutes a single piece, for this purpose, with the pinion 22 mounted on the head of the shaft; the teeth of this pinion mesh with that of pinion 21 which is in one piece with pinions 20. Pinions 20 are engaged with pinion 19 which is keyed on input shaft 1 '. The planet carrier 24 and 18 supports on part 18 the crown according to Figure 4 in one piece with it, and on which is threaded the ring 7 'in the manner described above.
Assuming that it is irrelevant that the output shaft rotates in the opposite direction to that of the input shaft, one can of course, in this case, considerably simplify the assembly method.
The input shaft (1 or 1 ') and the output shaft (13,13' or 23) are mounted one after the other in the axial direction, each of the two axes rotating independently of the 'other in the bearings made in the housing 15.
In all the embodiments indicated above, it is understandable that the proper movement of the flywheel always causes a small loss of speed on the output shaft relative to the input shaft; likewise, the difference in diameter between the planet wheels and the ring gear causes a loss of speed on the output shaft. This reduction in speed is then compensated by suitably reducing the ratio existing between the drive pinion and the crown of the ordinary differential of the vehicle. It is thus achieved that, as has been said, the vehicle does not lose final speed and can even, on the contrary, gain it.
The apparatus which has just been described can then be further completed by fitting an auxiliary element which prevents the free gyroscopic movement of the steering wheel, thanks to which, it is achieved that the elements of the transmission mechanism no longer engage. , and that the motor shaft and the output shaft are no longer coupled. The mechanism bringing together the two shafts can be disengaged, by ensuring that the conical ring 7 is in this case thrust axially against the flywheel 6 and penetrates by sliding into the orifice of the cone 10.
By means of another auxiliary mechanism, it is possible to prevent any change of position of the planetary system of the intermediate shaft 4, so that said elements are fixed in a determined position where they can then rotate, of course; the entire transmission mechanism can thus act in direct drive, since there is a direct coupling of the motor shaft with the driven shaft this use of a suitable auxiliary mechanism would be considered for direct circulation in a straight line and without drop.
In the case of mounting the device produced according to the invention on a vehicle, it is necessary to provide for the addition of a reversing mechanism which could include a neutral point, of the Wilson type or of another type. .
The automatic and progressive transmission mechanism which has just been described can be produced with any dimensions.
The embodiments described have been shown in the fi gures.

Figures 1 to 5 in side elevation, the left part being seen in longitudinal section and the right part in perspective with partial cutaway.
In the figures, the casing 15 surrounding the mechanism has not been taken into account in order to facilitate representation.
In summary, the advantages of the apparatus according to the invention should be further emphasized, namely: a) high transmission power, the reduction in weight and size of the apparatus to be emphasized. It is also important to note that the flywheel of the drive motor can be used as the flywheel of the described transmission mechanism. b) strong acceleration when starting the vehicle as well as when changing gear, since all the energy of the engine can be activated. c) all the slopes can be taken easily because the speed of the motor shaft easily adapts to that of the shaft to be driven. d) great ease of control both at start-up and when entering curves and slopes. e) simple construction with materials and components suitable for series production.
