<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS TO GLASS BARS,
This invention relates to glazing bar systems comprising a section from which leaves laterally, on one or each side, a support on which rests an edge of a window made of glass or other material, and a support. covering strip, part of which engages with one or more retaining members or parts provided on the profile, such that another part of the strip bears on the upper face of the window.
As these systems are usually employed to support panes of glass rather than some other material, the word glass will be used herein to denote the material to be supported, although other suitable sheet products may be used in some instances.
Various constructions have been proposed for glazing bar systems of the aforementioned type, some using relatively rigid cover strips, held in place in different ways, others using elastic cover strips, the various forms of construction meeting the requirements of the invention. to a greater or lesser extent to the main conditions required of glazing bars, namely simplicity of construction, ease and low cost of mass production, ease of assembly by non qualified,
sufficient flexibility to allow the use of panes of varying or different thicknesses and the ability to hold the pane firmly in place against the support without the risk of exerting excessive stresses on the glass regardless of the variations normal dimensions of the pane and parts of glazing bar systems and differences due to deformation of the parts as a result of the loads applied to them during assembly and / or variations and movements due to changes temperature or other causes, which may occur in the system itself and / or in the construction to which it is applied.
The object of the present invention is to provide a glazing bar system which largely meets the above requirements, taken as a whole.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
A glazing bar system according to the present invention comprises a section comprising a web from which leaves laterally a wing constituting a support or seat intended to support the edge of a pane above which the web sits. 'extends, and having a shoulder or rib which constitutes the upper side of a groove between the support and the web, the opening of the groove facing towards the web, and a covering strip elastic having an upper lateral part shaped so that its outer edge rests on the upper face of a window resting on the support, and a descending part shaped so as to extend between the edge of the window and the web and the upper edge or an intermediate part of its width of which rests on the web,
while its lower edge is shaped such that when this descending part is pressed from top to bottom to apply the side part elastically in intimate contact with the upper face of the lens, the lower edge is elastically introduced into the groove without the shoulder or rib and is held in this position by the reaction between the cover strip and the window, on the one hand, and the cover strip and the core, on the other hand.
In a suitable arrangement, the side flange of the profile has a surface extending from bottom to top in a direction inclined from the edge of the shoulder or rib away from the web, and towards the window, to form an inclined plane which, if necessary during assembly, guides the lower edge of the elastic cover strip over the shoulder or rib into the groove below. This inclined plane thus tends to prevent the lower edge of the elastic cover strip from accidentally passing under the glass instead of engaging in the groove during assembly and it also makes the assembly easier and more efficient. sure.
In any case, the descending part of the covering strip is preferably profiled in such a way as to come into contact with the part of the core situated approximately immediately opposite the edge of the pane, in order to prevent the lower edge of the strip to move away from the underside of the shoulder or rib under the pressure which may be exerted on the descending part of the strip by the edge of the window if the latter is moved towards the core.
An embodiment of the glazing bar system according to the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing which is a cross section taken on a plane perpendicular to the length of the system.
In the embodiment shown, the glazing bar system comprises a section of which the web A is provided with a reinforcing rib A1 along its upper edge and with two symmetrical wings A2 extending laterally at the side. opposite directions of its lower edge and each comprising a window support A3 and a rib or a shoulder A4 forming a groove A5, the open side of which faces towards the core A.
Each of the supports A3 is shaped so as to support the edge of a window B, as shown, and is combined with a covering strip C of elastic material comprising an upper lateral part C1, the outer edge of which bears on the upper face of the adjacent pane B, and a descending part C2 which extends from top to bottom between the web A and the edge of the pane B and forms at its lower edge a bead c3 which is engaged in the groove A5 and obtained by folding the lower edge of the cover strip first outwards, then from bottom to top and then inwards, as shown.
The outer edge of each strip C is curved inward, as indicated at C4, to achieve a better appearance and / or a stiffer edge of the strip and / or to provide a larger contact area. between it and the glass.
As can be seen, the descending part C2 of the covering strip comprises an upper part located in close proximity to the core A and extending to a point opposite the edge of the window B, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a lower part extending from this point from top to bottom towards the outside away from the web A. As a result of this arrangement, if the edge of the window B came to bear against the descending part of the band, there would be no great risk that it would blow the bead C3 from the groove A5.
When installing the glazing, we introduce the descending part
C2 of the strip between the web A of the profile and the edge of the window B and is pushed back from top to bottom so that the strip flexes in its entirety before the bead C3 enters the groove A5, the shape of the strip being such that the reaction which takes place between it and the glass
B on the one hand, and between the strip and the core A of the profile on the other hand, has the effect of making the bead C2 enter the groove A5 where it is held by this reaction.
In this respect, it will be noted that because, as shown, the outer edge C4 of the strip is further from the core
A that the groove A5, the reaction between this edge C4 and the window on the one hand and the reaction which is perpendicular to it between the upper edge of the strip and the core A on the other hand, produces a reaction on the bead C3 resulting in an inclined direction away from the web A, in addition to the elastic force due to the reaction between the web A and the descending part C2 of the strip.
Each of the ribs A4 has a surface A6 which is inclined relative to the core A and is intended to facilitate the passage of the bead.
C3 from top to bottom in the groove A5 during the positioning of the band, acting as an inclined plane on which the bead C3 slides.
Each side wing A2 of the profile also includes a flange A7 forming a channel intended to collect the water.
The dimensions of the various parts are preferably such that the side wings A2 comprising the flanges A7 do not significantly exceed the outer edges C4 of the cover strips, so that the parts A2, A7 do not obstruct the passage of the light through the panes over an area larger than that covered by the C bands.
If desired, a groove can be made in each of the window supports A3, in a manner known per se, to receive a flexible laying material, for example a fibrous material, rubber or the like, putty or similar plastic, or equivalent.
CLAIMS. l.- Glazing bar system comprising a section comprising a core from which leaves laterally a wing or part constituting a support intended to support the edge of a window above which the core extends, the profile also having a shoulder or rib constituting the upper face of a groove situated between the support and the core and the opening of which faces towards the core, and an elastic covering strip comprising an upper part s' extending laterally and shaped so that its outer edge rests on the upper face of a window resting on the support,
and a descending part shaped so as to pass between the edge of the window and the core and of which the upper edge or an intermediate part of its width rests on the core while its lower edge is shaped in such a way. that when the descending part is pressed from top to bottom to apply the upper lateral part elastically in intimate contact on the upper face of the pane, this lower edge is elastically introduced into the groove below the shoulder or rib and is maintained in this position by the reaction between the covering strip and the window, on the one hand, and between the strip and the core, on the other hand.
