PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX BRULEURS ROTATIFS.
La présente invention est relative à des perfectionnements aux brûleurs pour carburants liquides et, plus particulièrement, à des perfec- tionnements apportés à un brûleur à mazout du type à foyer rotatifo Les brûleurs à mazout du type à foyer rotatif sont caractérisés par un disposi- tif en forme de cuvette, à l'intérieur duquel s'effectue la combustion; ce dispositif est entraîné à grande vitesse, de telle sorte que la flamme qui se trouve à 1'intérieur de celui-ci et celle qui s'échappe de son embouchu- re subissent également une rotation;
La présente invention a pour objet un brûleur rotatif dans lequel un appareil creux, ouvert à l'une de ses extrémités, délimitant in- térieurement une chambre de combustion, est pourvu d'une paroi terminale et d'une paroi latérale de section transversale généralement circulaire, et est mis en rotation par un moteur autour de l'axe de la paroi latérale; l'appareil précité comprend un élément en forme de cuvette à l'intérieur de la chambre, élément dans lequel on introduit le carburant, et un dis- positif pour alimenter cette chambre en air de combustion;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Autour d'un grand orifice prévu sur le côté droit du carter du moteur se trouve une conduite d'amenée d'air 62, conduite pourvue d'une fer- meture 63 servant à régler l'arrivée d'air ; une ouverture réglable 64 est pratiquée dans la porte, et elle détermine le débit minimum., Un déflecteur 65 est fixé à la paroi interne du carter du moteur, au-dessus de l'arrivée d'air;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

ROTARY BURNERS IMPROVEMENTS.
The present invention relates to improvements to burners for liquid fuels and, more particularly, to improvements made to an oil burner of the rotary hearth type. Oil burners of the rotary hearth type are characterized by a device. bowl-shaped, inside which combustion takes place; this device is driven at high speed, so that the flame which is inside it and that which escapes from its mouthpiece also undergo a rotation;
thus obtaining practically complete combustion of the fuel oil
The present invention relates to a rotary burner in which a hollow apparatus, open at one of its ends, internally delimiting a combustion chamber, is provided with an end wall and a side wall of generally cross section. circular, and is rotated by a motor around the axis of the side wall; the aforementioned apparatus comprises an element in the form of a bowl inside the chamber, an element into which the fuel is introduced, and a device for supplying this chamber with combustion air;
the motor drives the apparatus at a speed of rotation such that the fuel is projected by centrifugal force from the bowl to the side wall of the apparatus, and is thus sprayed
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide, in a burner of the type described, devices with a view to further improving the combustion; this object is achieved by providing devices for delaying the passage of combustion gases from the rotating device and, furthermore, by insulating the device such that heat losses are minimized.
The subject of the invention is also a burner assembly driven by a motor, which assembly comprises a device for protecting the burner.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
motor against the heat given off in the rotary combustion chamber, so that the motor can be placed in the vicinity of the chamber and form with it a collected assembly.
Another object of the invention is to prevent warping of the rotating assembly under the effect of the heat of combustion released inside this assembly.
The subject of the invention is also a new drive device connecting the engine and the combustion chamber by means of distinct hollow parts, the union of which ensures the supply of fuel oil and air to the chamber.
The invention also provides, inside the combustion chamber, improved devices for the distribution of fuel oil in pulverized form.
In order to better understand the invention and further appreciate its characteristics and advantages, reference is made to the detailed description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawing,
The single figure of the drawing shows in section an oil burner according to the present invention.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 11 denotes a hollow bowl-shaped apparatus made of thin heat-resistant metal. Around and outside this device is provided a jacket 12 which, by its upper end, is fixed to the device, for example by welding; this jacket comprises a lower extension 13, of reduced diameter, in the form of a cup. In the space which extends between the jacket and the structure 11 is a filling of an insulating material 14, such as asbestos, which is retained at the bottom of the device by a plate 15.
In a central opening passing through the bottom 16 of the structure or bowl 11 and through the plate 15 there is a tubular member 17 which is fixed, by welding for example, by its upper end, to this structure and, by its lower part, to a collar 18, screwed onto the hollow shaft 19 of an electric motor generally shown as
20. The lower portion of reduced cross section and threaded of the collar 18 extends through a hole in the bottom wall of the extension of the liner 13, which extension is clamped against the collar by means of a nut 21 serving. either an air fan or a finned blower 22 can also be attached to the collar.
The collar 18 is locked in position on the shaft 19 of the motor against a stop nut 23, this nut being fixed to the shaft by welding, for example. A cylindrical member 24, pierced with a bore 25 which widens and is plugged at its top, is screwed onto the part of the motor shaft which projects above the collar 18 and constitutes an extension of the shaft. Around the organ. Cylindrical 24 is a tube 26 which fits and is fixed to an enlarged lower part of said member, so that there is an air-filled space between the tube and the greater part of the upper portion of this member.
The tube 26 extends above the member 24 and supports at this location an upturned bowl 27, of thin heat-resistant metal and having a side wall inclined outwards. The cuvette is held in place by a hollow plug 28 attached to the cuvette and frictionally engaging the interior surface of the tubing with the cap nut 29 being used to remove the cuvette.
Projecting laterally and descending slightly downward from the upper end of member 24, there are a number of tubes 30 which pass through orifices in tube 26 and which communicate with bore 25. Inside the bowl 27 is disposed an annular screen 31, the lower edge of which conforms to a raised part of the end wall 16 of the structure 11.
The electric motor 20 is of standard construction (here

near that its shaft 19 is hollow) and therefore we will not describe its interior elements. At its lower part the engine is mounted by means of a hollow cylindrical insert 32 on the lower wall 33 of the housing 34 which comprises a lateral cylindrical wall 35 and a marginal upper wall 36. The cover is provided with james support 37. Attachment 32 is attached to the motor by screws and has a narrowed portion extending through a hole provided in wall 33 and threaded to receive a hollow plug 38 which holds the component attached and, consequently, the engine, fixed to the crankcase.
On the end part of the motor shaft 19, inside

inside the insert 32 and firmly fixed to the shaft 9 is a collar 39 against which another collar 40, sliding freely along the shaft, is held by the pressure of the spring 41, compressed; between the collar 40 and the cap 38. A corrugated metal bellows 42 is fixed at its opposite ends, by welding for example, to the bottom of the piece.

bearing 32 and to a casing 33 sealed to the collar / C3o The arrangement described constitutes a fluid-tight rotary seal around the lower part of the hollow shaft of the motor, it being understood that the surfaces of the collars 39 and 40 that come into contact are properly trained.
In communication with the recess of the motor shaft, through the gap between the cap 38 and the lower part of the insert 32, there is a pipe 44 screwed into an opening made through. the side wall of the cap. fixed, for example by spot welding, to the upper marginal wall 36 of the motor housing and constituting an internal extension of the wall is a member 45 in the form of a shallow cup which, together with a cover plate 46 , provides housing for ventilation.

tor 22.
A chamber 47, above the fan housing and all around the extension 13 of the burner jacket, is delimited by the cover plate 46 and by a member 48 in the form of an inverted bowl (both provided holes suitable to fit freely around the extension 13), the member 48 being fixed to the lower insulation 45 forming a bowl by means of screws 49 passing through relatively large holes 50 made in the plate = cover however 'there is a series of orifices distributed over a circumference which allows the free passage of the air from the fan into the chamber 47.
Around the burner, and mounted at the top of the element 48, is an annular element 51 which supports at its top a combustion ring 52 as well as a circular baffle plate 53 for the heat.

atmospheric release 15 the space above the lubricating oil and thus prevent the oil from being carried upwards, through the bush 54, under the inaction of the fan 22; for similar purposes, it
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
There is also an orifice 61 which is made in the element 55.
Around a large orifice provided on the right side of the motor housing is an air supply duct 62, a duct provided with a closure 63 serving to regulate the air supply; an adjustable opening 64 is made in the door, and it determines the minimum flow rate., A deflector 65 is fixed to the internal wall of the motor housing, above the air inlet;
this deflector extends in part around the jacket 56 and it serves to ensure better distribution of the aira
The admission of fuel oil or fuel oil through pipe 44 is regulated by a valve 66 and a float valve 67, whereby (when the apparatus is not in use) the fuel oil in the 'hollow shaft 19 of the motor and its extension 24 is maintained at the level indicated by line 68 in broken lines.
When the fan 22 is in operation, air is introduced through the duct 62 into the motor housing 34 and from there it passes through the orifices 69 made in the element 45, in the mouth 70 of the fan, the air is entrained from the fan housing towards the orifices 50 and from there it passes into the chamber 47, then it leaves to go, through the orifices 71 and 72, in the extension of the jacket 13 and in the tubular element 17, then, through the latter, it goes into the bowl 27 and then descends beyond the edge or the mouth 73 of this bowl, inside the structure 11.
Secondary combustion air is brought around the structure 11 to the mpyen of orifices 74 made in the upper wall of the element 48 At the lower end of the tube 26 there are orifices 75, through which air cooling can circulate around the element 24 for supplying the fuel.
In operation, the burner is driven at high speed (preferably at 1550 rpm when the diameter of the bowl-shaped structure 11 is 15.24 cm) so that the fuel oil is forced out of the flared bore 25 by centrifugal force and sent through the pipes 30 (and through the screen 31, which serves to prevent backfire when the burner is ignited) against the side wall of the bowl 27; the fuel oil is projected tangentially, in the pulverized state, from the rim of the bowl 73 to the side wall of the structure 11.
The air which enters the bowl of the burner through the mouth of the bowl rotates at high speed, due to the friction which occurs between this air and the interior surface of said bowl, so that it acts on the jet of fuel oil to atomize it and produce a swirling mixture which, after having been lighted beforehand by any suitable means, burns inside the bowl as well as above the mouth of the bowl when the combustion is intense.
When the fuel oil is admitted at a low rate, the combustion takes place entirely inside the bowl and gives a not very intense fire, as represented by the flames 76; a deflector (or annular rib) 77, formed on the side wall of the bowl, delays the rise of the mixture in combustion, so that this mixture remains in the bottom of the bowl, which allows a flame to be obtained unimportant; the rib 77 is also useful when the combustion is intense because, by delaying the departure of the combustion gases from the lower part of the bowl, a high temperature is produced, which gives a significant improvement in the combustion.
The rim 78 directed towards the interior of the bowl, also serves as a deflector to delay the exit of the combustion gases, but it has been found that in practice, to obtain the best results, it is necessary to provide, in a lower plane, a deflector such as rib 77.
By giving the fuel receiving and distribution bowl 27 an inverted position, its orifice being near the end wall 16 of the structure 11, the combustion is started at the bottom of the structure, in such a way that all its contents are subjected to combustion, which results in a high internal temperature and improved combustion.In addition, the entire outer surface of the bowl-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
te 27 is normally subjected to combustion, so that carbon deposits are avoided and the interior of the bowl remains relatively clean, since fuel does not remain in the bowl when the burner is not in use. service.
The fact of providing thermal insulation around the perimeter and the bottom of the structure 11 contributes, moreover, to maintaining a high temperature inside this structure.
The jacket 12 not only serves to maintain the insulating material around the structure 11, but also to reinforce the structure to avoid its deformation at the high temperatures to which it is subjected, a proper balance of the apparatus being the essential condition of its rotation at high speed.
The compact assembly shown in the accompanying drawing is made pos = sible by the fact that devices are provided for protecting the motor against the heat produced in the burner. These devices include: the lubricating oil reservoir around the engine; the casing located around the tank and through which the combustion air is sucked in, and the fan housing placed between the burner and the engine assembly.
The particular embodiment which is the subject of the invention as described and shown is subject to modifications without departing from the limits of the invention.
