<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR 'LA. CAST OF FOUNDRY TRAPS, FOR EXEMPY OF METAL PLATES.
The present invention relates to methods for the casting of foundry parts, in particular of metal plates, and to apparatuses for carrying out these methods.
One of the aims of the invention is to provide a process allowing the casting to be carried out without risk of oxidation, contamination of the metal or formation of foam, and which is distinguished in particular by great simplicity.
Another object of the invention is to make apparatus as simple as possible for carrying out the method so that said apparatus can withstand the hard service imposed on them by the casting. Another object of the invention is to provide a casting process for foundry parts which can be implemented with a casting line comprising a large number of cups and in which the various working operations and orders follow one another in a perfectly automatic manner. The invention also relates to novel devices and a combination of devices for obtaining this automatic control. The invention is of particular importance for the casting of zinc plates.
A particular feature of the process for casting foundry parts, in particular metal plates, which is the subject of the invention, consists in passing the molten metal from the melting furnace into a metering chamber via a first valve provided in this chamber, and then this chamber in the pouring cup, by a second valve, the metering chamber being equipped with a regulating device determining the introduction of always equal and predetermined doses of metal into said chamber, and then the distribution of these doses in the pouring cups.
Preferably, the inlet and flow valves of the metering chamber are controlled by a common mechanism so that the inlet valve is closed and the pour valve is opened after the introduction of the dose of metal into the metering chamber. said room.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another peculiarity of the process for casting foundry parts, in particular metal plates which are the subject of the invention, -in which the molten metal is first introduced into a metering chamber equipped with an inlet valve and of a casting valve, consists in that the valves are controlled according to each other and according to the movements of a casting line carrying the cups so that a dose of metal is distributed by; ' metering chamber whenever an empty bucket of the pouring line is stopped under the pouring spout of the metering chamber.
According to a preferred and practical embodiment of the method which is the subject of the invention, the operations of filling and emptying the metering chamber are directed by a pulse generator, the operation of which is controlled by the level of the metal. melting in the chamber, while the actual emptying operation of the metering chamber is initiated in synchronism with the movements of the casting line carrying the cups.
To carry out the process which is the subject of the invention, it is advantageously possible to use a float device opening and forming at determined intervals the inlet valve and closing the casting valve, while the opening of the casting valve is triggered. preferably electrically depending on the movements of the casting line carrying the buckets.
Another feature of the invention consists of a device by which the pouring valve can only be actuated independently of the pulse generator of the metering chamber when an empty bucket of the pouring line is placed under the pouring nozzle. dosing device.
Preferably the casting valve is actuated for opening by an electric control device which can in turn be controlled by the casting chain drive device. Of course, the control operations necessary for implementing the method which is the subject of the invention can be carried out by other means.
The invention offers in particular the advantage that the assembly, while being of a simple construction, ensures the perfectly automatic filling and emptying of the metering device, while the pouring valve opens to distribute the fractions. molten metal, at the exact moment, that is to say only when a bucket of the casting line is placed under the pouring spout of the metering device or under an emptying device communicating with the chamber
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing given by way of non-limiting example will clearly understand how the invention can be carried out, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text being of course part of said invention.

Figure 2 is a schematic side elevational view with partial section of another embodiment of the invention for the neck. Continuous casting in buckets forming part of a casting line.
Figure 3 is a section on line III-III of figure 2.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the melting furnace 41 is attached to an isolated metering chamber 42, made of ceramic material, equipped with an inlet valve 43 and a casting valve 44. The two valves are interconnected by a balance 45 so that one opens while the other closes. The dose of metal fixed in advance that one wishes to pass from the Spy oven 41 into the metering chamber 42 is determined by a float 46 provided with a rod 47 passing through the top 48 of the metering chamber 42 This rod 47 actuates an electrical switch 49 which opens or closes the circuit of two solenoids 50 and 51 provided for controlling the valves.
An adjustment device 52 makes it possible to fix the initial position of the float 46 so that the metal

is introduced into the metering chamber in desired quantities always equal to then be distributed in the cups 53
In the embodiment shown in Figures 2 and 3, the metering device cooperates with an endless casting chain 1 carrying a large number of cups 2, which makes it possible to successively and automatically fill the cups with exactly predetermined doses of metal, for example for the manufacture of zinc plates.

required filling of the cavity 23 of the dosing chamber o -.-
During the penetration of the molten metal into the cavity 23 of the metering chamber, the casting chain 1 is advanced by the propelling cylinder 4 to remove from the metering chamber the cup which has been filled during the batching cycle. previous work and to bring an empty bucket under the pouring chute 12 of the chamber 8.
During the advancement of the casting chain by one division, that is, the width of a bucket, and a little before the end of stroke of the piston of the propulsion cylinder 4, the stop 32 of the extension 31 of the spool of the inverter 6 triggers the reversal of the distribution of the pressurized liquid by the main distributor 5. The pistons of the propulsion cylinders 4 therefore return to their starting position and drive the pusher 3 in the same way.
As soon as the empty bucket has arrived under the spout of the pouring chute 12 of the metering chamber 8, the pusher 3 actuates, through the stop 34, the switch 33 which closes the circuit of the electromagnet 22 of the casting valve 14 and therefore opens the outlet port II of the metering chamber. 8.
The quantity of metal contained in the metering chamber 'can therefore flow through the pouring chute 12 into the empty cup 2, then placed under the spout of this chute.
Emptying the metering chamber 8 causes the float 24 to descend. As soon as the control member 26 of the float 24 reaches its lowest position, it simultaneously actuates the switches 29 and 30. The switch 29 through the electromagnet 19 triggers the cover of the intake valve 13, while the switch 30 simultaneously triggers the energization of the electromagnet 22 in the direction of closing. the pouring valve 14, the metal can therefore again pass from the filling funnel 9 into the cavity 23 of the metering chamber. During the filling period of this metering chamber, the hydraulic propulsion device moves the filled cup away from the spout of the pouring chute 12 in order to replace it with a new empty cup.
At the start of this movement, the switch 33 is opened again, This operating cycle is repeated each time in rhythm with the advancement movements of the casting line 1.
The casting speed can be varied between widely spaced limits by controlling the amount of pressurized liquid in the hydraulic propelling device. The advancement and return times of the propulsion pistons are exactly adapted respectively to the duration of admission of the metal into the metering chamber and to the emptying time of this chamber so that the operation of the casting is fully automatic.
It goes without saying that modifications can be made both to the process and to the apparatus which have just been described, in particular by substituting equivalent technical means: without going beyond the scope of the present invention.
