HIGH ELASTIC LIMIT STEEL WIRE MANUFACTURING PROCESS.
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing steel wire for which a particularly high elastic limit is required. this condition is imposed for example on metal wires for prestressed concrete. In the case of these metal wires, it is necessary, in order to avoid the creep of the steel, to avoid exceeding the elastic limit. Heretofore, it has been confined to making such metallic wires with a high tensile strength. But, danb le. In the case of these metallic wires, the elastic limit is relatively low, although a high point of permanent elongation of 0.2% is also obtained, which has been designated as the draw limit, in the absence of a limit sharply marked stretch.
It has been surprisingly found that by heating the wire above its Ac3 point, abrupt cooling and subsequent tempering of short duration only, a high stretch limit is obtained which is clearly marked as the inflection point in the tension-elongation curve and that, up to the vicinity of this stretch limit, the elongation is elastic, that is to say that the elastic limit is situated only slightly below this limit d stretch can be precisely determined.
In accordance with the invention, therefore, steel threads having a very high elastic limit are produced by subjecting them, after sudden cooling from a temperature above the Ac3 point, to short-term tempering. The tempering temperature to achieve a determined tensile strength is a little higher than that which is required in the improvement methods customary hitherto to obtain the same tensile strength.
For example, steels, which would usually be subjected to a tempering at about 425 C, are, in the process according to

the invention, advantageously subjected to a tempering at about 460 C, and steels, which would usually be subjected to a tempering at 4500 G, are, in the process according to the invention, advantageously subjected to a short-term tempering at 5000 C approximately.
Particularly favorable results were obtained in the process according to the invention when the heating of the metal wire took place above the Ac3 point with subsequent sudden cooling in the oil bath and when the tempering of short duration. took place immediately afterwards by passage through furnaces. By the possibility of precisely regulating the speed of passage of the metal wire through the furnaces and of regulating the temperature in the continuous passage furnaces, it is possible to respect in a safe way, in a particular measure, the necessary conditions. for the method according to the invention. By following the sudden cooling immediately with the tempering treatment, the formation of tension marks in the wire is also avoided.
A steel having for example the following composition: 0.65-0.75% carbon, 0.60-0.90% silicon and 1.2-1.5% manganese, has been shown to be very advantageous for the treatment by the method according to the invention.
In the case of a metal wire, with a diameter of 5-8 mm for example, made of such a steel, it was - after reheating above point Ac3, sudden cooling in oil and subsequent tempering of such a short duration a clearly marked limit in stretch was observed - obtained for example a tensile strength of 168 kg / mm2, a marked limit in stretch of 158 kg / mm2, a permanent elongation of 0.01 % at 151 kg / mm2 and an elongation at break of 7.6%, - these results having been measured on a test piece of a length equal to 10 times the diameter of the test piece.
Such a high elastic limit, with the same elongation at break, has by far not been achieved with the metallic wires known heretofore, which are brought to a high tensile strength by cold deformation or by the process. usual improvement.
