<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
' Enfin, en raison de 1-1 emploi prévu pour le métal de base considé- ré, les conditions de grand intérêt et également de moindre intérêt déjà ex- posées pour le métal de base et valables également pour le métal d'apport, peuvent être obtenues d'une manière tout à fait satisfaisante uniquement en appliquant un régime thermique spécial pour la soudure à 1-lare électrique;

On rappelle que le procédé italien consiste à examiner la cassure d'un cordon de soudure électrique déposé suivant un angle de 90 entre deux laides ayant une épaisseur de 15 mm. et disposées en T rigide au moyen d'une soudure préalable dans l'angle opposé, le T étant incliné de telle manière que la soudure d'essai de l'éprouvette qui doit pro- céder de bas en haut avance vers le soudeur suivant une inclinaison de 45 ;

Bien que la résistance à la rupture par traction de l'acier con- forme à l'invention puisse atteindre 125 Kg/mm2 à l'état laminé, trempé à l'air et soudé sans aucun traitement thermique ultérieur, et 130 Kg/mm2 à l'état non soudé, il conviendra, de maintenir, dans le cas de tel s états phy- siques, en utilisant des teneurs appropriées pour les différents constituants, une résistance maxima à la rupture par traction de 91 à 96 Kg/mm2., à l'état laminé, trempé à l'air et soudé sans aucun traitement thermique ultérieur, ou encore de 96 à 100 Kg/mm2. à l'état non soudé;
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
En pratique, les échantillons de plaque d'acier obtenus par la coulée déjà décrite et présentant à l'analyse chimique les teneurs suivan- tes: C = 0,14 %; Si = 0,12 %; Mn = 0,88 %; Cr = 1,40 %; Mo = 0,87 %; V = 0,19 %; Ti = 0, 05 %; S = 0,013 %;

SPECIAL STEEL WITH LOW CARBON CONTENT AND PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURING
METAL ASSEMBLIES WELDED WITH THIS STEEL.
It is known that in the technique of welded assemblies one seeks to obtain the maintenance, as far as possible, of the primitive physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the metal which constitutes them, after welding and in particular in the transition zone. with said weld. The primitive properties are those exhibited by the metal in the rolled state and air hardened without it being necessary for such maintenance to carry out a heat treatment before or after welding, a treatment which would be expensive and which would not always be possible to perform.
It is known, on the other hand,., That as regards the effect of the thermal action of the weld, more particularly as regards the field of high tensile strengths, the physical and chemical properties and mechanics of the transition zone can be considered unfavorable for the safety of welded constructions; it is also known that in the presence of shrinkage stresses, cracks may occur in such a zone during the cooling phase of the weld due to the hot brittleness of the zone considered.
While the stresses can be reduced by means of preheating and by application of a special welding process and they can be corrected by means of suitable heat treatments, for example by means of the introduction of the sets. - Welded in suitable furnaces, cracks can have serious consequences, especially if they are hidden.
It is also known that welded constructions cannot, because of their monolithic character, undergo slippage allowing in riveted constructions the elimination of any possible localized elastic overvoltage, and are therefore subject to rupture in service, more particularly at low temperatures. These ruptures occur all the more easily than the. Ductility drop is greatest in the transition zone leading to the weld.
The degree of conservation of ductility, considered measured by the bending angle and by the transverse contraction, forms a parameter of the weldability, determining rather well the safety in service, better than
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
considering the degree of retention of ductility measured by the value of resilience and hardness.
It follows from the above considerations that there is a great interest in being able to establish welded assemblies exhibiting more particularly a high resistance to. tensile failure, the metal being characterized by the absence of hot brittleness as well as by high values in the weld transition zone, of the bending or bending angle and of the transverse contraction, these high values being more important with regard to the effects of weldability and safety than the properties regarding the conservation in the transition zone of the primary values of resilience and hardness, the latter conservation being obtainable both with steels with a limited degree of flexibility,
while being insufficient in all cases to moderate cold brittleness.
Thanks to this, we could achieve the triple result of avoiding extremely dangerous continuity solutions with regard to hot brittleness, also avoiding extremely damaging breaks with regard to cold brittleness and finally to avoid the need for heat treatments to standardize the structure of the welded joints, and it remains to consider the only possibility of reheating after welding, to take into account only the connecting voltages, reheating which is by garlic - They are extremely inadvisable for many reasons in the case of low carbon welded steels, taking into account the fatigue limits.
We know that a steel is a metal in the composition of which it enters, besides iron and carbon, other elements and that while being able to be, as a metal, considered to be constituted by alloys, variations even small amplitude of certain constituents have a huge influence on the properties of steel. Thus, if it is admitted that it is already possible to know metals comprising the constituents indicated below, it will be noted that the invention consists mainly in that the steel constituting the metal forming the base of the welded constructions contains a particular percentage of the different constituents,
so as to satisfy the conditions set out above, which are of primary interest in addition to those set out above of lesser interest. We already know, at least in part, the often contradictory effects of certain constituents of steels with regard to the particular results to be achieved. In contrast, the particular effects of other components to be used are entirely characteristic of the present invention. In all cases, the alloy forming the base metal for the welded constructions according to the present invention must be considered in the context of all the constituents which form it and in the ratios of their percentages.
The weld transition zone should be considered, for greater clarity, as an unmelted zone of the base metal, the properties of which are altered by the heat of the weld and which is limited by the isotherm of fusion and by the isothermal of austenitic transformation.
Only the base metal concerns this zone which is not influenced by the chemical composition of the filler metal; However, it is natural that in order to obtain welded joints having homogeneous characteristics, the filler metal must itself have particular properties from the physical, chemical and mechanical points of view.
Finally, owing to the 1-1 use foreseen for the base metal considered, the conditions of great interest and also of less interest already set out for the base metal and also valid for the filler metal, may be obtained in a completely satisfactory manner only by applying a special thermal regime for electric welding;
it follows that the present invention relates, in addition to the base metal, also a method of manufacturing welded constructions, characterized in that with the use of this base steel, special electrodes and a special thermal regime for electric arc welding, it is possible to obtain welded assemblies with very high safety, that is

It will be recalled that the Italian process consists in examining the breakage of an electric weld bead deposited at an angle of 90 between two ugly pieces having a thickness of 15 mm. and arranged in a rigid T by means of a preliminary weld in the opposite angle, the T being inclined in such a way that the test weld of the specimen which is to proceed from bottom to top advances towards the welder following a incline of 45;
on the other hand, the French process consists of depositing an electrical weld bead along a plane with a copper support between two pointed ends 2 mm apart. and obtained by leaving a double longitudinal groove by means of a suitable milling in the middle of the two surfaces of a blade having a thickness of 18 mm., after which a second bead is deposited on the opposite surface, the grooves having a limited length so that the unworked part of the blade rigidly maintains the two pointed ends obtained as indicated.
To further demonstrate the properties of an electric arc welded air hardened rolled steel spouting in the atmosphere or in a fluid, the electrode preferably being coated with a basic flux. and being capable of providing a filler metal as indicated above, deposited according to the thermal regime of intermediate welding, and without any heat treatment after welding, this filler metal having the chemical composition in accordance with the invention, the mechanical and physical characteristics corresponding to bands with a thickness of 4.8 and 12 mm will be given below. obtained by other castings of steel in accordance with the present invention.

R.I.N ............ No crack formation ..................
French process id.
In seeking an explanation of such new and unforeseen results obtained with the steel and the welded assemblies according to the invention, it was thought that due to the particularly low carbon content and the relative percentages and without excess of chromium ;, molybdenum and vanadium in the base metal and in the filler metal and finally due to the thermal arc welding regime, called intermediate as indicated above, regime allowing a high heating speed at beyond point AC 3 during welding, while preventing a cooling rate.
In the order of the speeds used for martensitic quenching after welding, there is very little carbon which has time to be released by decomposition beyond point AC 3, from chromium carbides, molybdenum and vanadium which are in themselves already very stable. It follows that in addition to the fact that the undecomposed carbides thus maintained in the steel prevent the growth of the austenitic grain during heating, they act as crystallization seeds during cooling so that they in - influence in a very favorable way the quality of the crystals and therefore the weldability.
This weldability is further improved by the fact that the quenching phenomena are extremely reduced, either because of the small amount of free carbon dissolved in the austenity, or because of the limited cooling speed.
On the contrary, with regard to the excellent behavior of this steel with regard to hot brittleness, one will notice the very favorable influence of the high molybdenum content associated with the low carbon and sulfur contents and, in addition, it is necessary to consider the advantageous circumstance according to which the manganese is found in sufficiently high proportions to obtain good desulphurization, while being low enough not to favor martensitic quenching.
In order to prove even better the favorable action on the process of establishing welded constructions and on the steel according to the invention of undecomposed carbides, it must be considered that the weldable steels known until now to date have a tensile strength

, the carbon content being at most equal to 0.20% and even to 0.16%, these samples failed on the bending test for angles always less than 90 while showing ,, in the zone transition, resilience and hardness values almost equal to those of the unwelded base metal.
The only exception, as regards the elements which do not produce carbide, is constituted by the cobalt which, in the samples obtained with a steel according to the present invention (cast N 7), did not have. adverse effect on weldability and even increased the al-

self-action rupture of 60 and cri0 Kg / ù * 2 in the rolled state, trexipated in air and electrically welded without any subsequent thermal treatment, is also caused by the presence of excessively high levels of vanadium and, in fact, it has been found that if these contents are equal to at least 0.26%, the average diameter of the austenitic grain clearly exceeds the corresponding average diameter of the austenitic grain of steels devoid of vanadium when one exceeds, even for a short time,
temperature of 1100 causing dangerous losses of ductility in the weld transition zone.

while exhibiting resilience and hardness values in the transition zone which are almost equal to those of the unwelded base metal.
With oxyacetylene welding and with atomic arc welding, such bending angles would have negligible values.
It should also be noted that the steels considered to be weldable known to date and having a tensile strength greater than 60 and 90 Kg / mm2 in the rolled state, air hardened and electric arc welded without any subsequent heat treatment and containing more than 1%

the case where the filler metal contains, for its part, manganese contents greater than 1%, or else nickel percentages greater than 0.50%, or finally vanadium percentages greater than 0, 26 5, the bending angles would decrease even further.
It is particularly important to note that the properties of high hot and cold ductility of the steel according to the invention are probably favored by the low silicon content not exceeding maximum '0, 20%. In fact, tests carried out on steel samples considered to be weldable and having a tensile strength greater than 0.60 and 90 Kg / mm2, in the rolled state and air hardened and containing Si = 0.20% to 1.20%, showed hot and cold deformability characteristics (stamping) always lower as one goes from the value Si = 0,
20% at the value Si = 1.20 5. Finally, with these latter silicon contents, apart from the dangers of graphitization, a longitudinal woody structure can easily be caused. the rest of the work carried out in the same direction, which is quite detrimental, particularly in the case of welded assemblies due to the subsequent lowering of the transverse ductility caused by such a structure.
In the field of low manganese contents in the manufacture of steel according to the present invention, it has been possible to define a minimum content of 0.50% to ensure sufficient desulphurization capable itself of combating the hot brittleness which would otherwise be caused by the iron sulphides, this brittleness being, as already said, capable of causing cracking under the effect of the shrinkage stresses of the weld.
Likewise, care should be taken to limit copper impurities to 0.50% at most, because copper can cause hot brittleness.
Finally, although the impurities constituted by the nickel do not normally reach 0.50%, care will be taken to avoid such impurities both because of the quenching action thus caused and because of the possibility of causing cracking as a result of the simultaneous presence of the withdrawal stresses of the weld, said quenching actions and often pre-existing solutions of continuity, called flakes, of nickel steels.
It has also been found that the steel according to the invention, while ensuring better mechanical and physical results, both in the case of electric fusion welding and with the most modern methods of electrical resistance welding, welding by indicated fusion which can be obtained either by means of an open air arc applied by hand or in an automatic or semi-automatic manner or alternatively by the automatic or semi-automatic submerged arc process, preserves also almost unaltered the properties of mechanical resistance to breakage by traction as well as of hardness,
and even after oxyacetylene welding or atomic arc welding, it retains ductility and toughness values greater than those obtained with steels considered to be weldable and known to date and welded by the latest methods indicated.
Although the tensile strength of the steel according to the invention can reach 125 Kg / mm2 in the rolled state, air hardened and welded without any subsequent heat treatment, and 130 Kg / mm2 in the non-welded state, in the case of such physical states, using appropriate contents for the different constituents, a maximum tensile strength of 91 to 96 kg / mm2 should be maintained. , in the rolled state, air hardened and welded without any subsequent heat treatment, or even from 96 to 100 Kg / mm2. in the unwelded state;
such strengths will allow rapid and economical machining thanks to the fact that we are in the field of linear correspondences between tensile strength and the cost of machining. The proportion increases on the contrary, as we know, very quickly beyond 105 Kg / mm2.
The use of steel
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
in accordance with the present invention relates above all to welded assemblies, particularly in the case where it allows a reduction in weight, whether these are fixed constructions such as boilers, penstocks, pressure tanks, military and civil bridges and structures of all types, etc ... or even mobile constructions such as those intended for railways, aeronautics, automobiles, trams, but it was found that the same constructions still lend themselves very well without reduction in mechanical properties to cementation treatments, and that.
is undoubtedly due to the strong antagonistic action to the superheating of vanadium below the temperature of 11000 with high content of molybdenum as well as to the great stability of the carbides of V, Mo, Cr and to the low contents of C and Mn which promote the maintenance of high values of ductility after quenching following case hardening.
It is thus possible to manufacture welded and subsequently carburized and quenched structural elements which exhibit much higher breaking loads, while maintaining high values of ductility, and it is even possible to obtain also, thanks to an appropriate preparation of the edges, of the sets cemented by carburizing and quenching before welding, and in particular breastplates for ships, aircraft, land vehicles, etc ...
with the advantage of being able to proceed with electric welding without having to fear drops in breaking strength such as those which would occur when welding normal steels improved with Cr, Ni or Mo or with any other alloy , as known to date and this with the additional advantage of being able to use electrodes of the type already described, the price of which is quite lower than that of austenitic stainless steel electrodes necessary for the welding of improved normal steels for armor plates. view to oppose any tendency to crack formation and, finally,
with the latter advantage of not producing transition zones devoid of ductility and toughness as would appear using the above improved normal steels for the production of armor.
It has also been found that the steel according to the present invention, when it is used in the rolled and annealed state, makes it possible to achieve elongation percentage values much higher than those which can be obtained. with weldable steels known to date, exhibiting, when they are hardened in air, a breaking strength equal to that of the steel according to the invention in the annealed state. This fact is very important for applications such as compressed or liquefied gas tanks, where it is desired to obtain not only a high tensile strength and improved weldability, but also a sufficiently high elongation to allow an adequate increase in the strength. diameter of the tanks before reaching the burst point.
In practice, the steel plate samples obtained by the casting already described and exhibiting the following contents for chemical analysis: C = 0.14%; Si = 0.12%; Mn = 0.88%; Cr = 1.40%; Mo = 0.87%; V = 0.19%; Ti = 0.05%; S, 0.013%;
P = 0.015%; kept in a closed chamber for 5 hours at 880 and cooled, while remaining in the closed chamber, from 700 to 400, for a period of 11 hours, gave the following results following mechanical tests:

It has also been found that the steel according to the present invention, in the rolled and air-hardened state, can be welded by any welding process while retaining the mechanical properties of strength almost unaltered. tensile strength and hardness and can therefore be used advantageously for the preparation of high strength wires also cold drawn and intended to be welded, which wires can also be used after heat hardening. water taking into account that in each case the mechanical characteristics, in the weld transition zone, will present the values obtained with the steel according to the invention in the rolled state, air quenched and welded.
Finally, it has been observed that the steel in accordance with the invention exhibits, probably due to the high molybdenum content, excellent mechanical behavior at high temperatures.
