C H A I S E .

CHAIR .
The present invention relates to chairs, intended, among other uses in offices and industries, the back of which is supported by a tube or a similar element with an adjustable height position.
In chairs of this kind it is generally required that the backrest, in addition to the possibility of being able to be fixed in different height positions, can also be adjusted from front to back with respect to the seat or rather with respect to the seat. the cross of the seat This double adjustment is possible because the tube can slide in a folding sleeve around a horizontal journal of the foot or of the cross of the seat and can be fixed on the support of the backrest by means of 'a set screw which simultaneously blocks the tilting position of the sleeve to the cross since the set screw can be moved in a slot of said cross.
According to the invention, is combined as a clamping member, with a backrest support in the form of a circular tube, a semi-cylindrical flange with side arms enveloping half of the circular tube, these arms having ends straightened internally one in direction on the other and in which is guided a tightening bolt $ capable of tightening the semi-cylindrical flange, said ends being arranged and profiled in such a way that they constitute for the flange a complementary envelope of the tube, as well as elements reinforcement for said side arms.
In order to obtain a good result, that is to say not only a rational execution but also an energetic tightening, it is important that the support of the backrest itself is constituted by an ordinary (circular) tube, since only this arrangement guarantees a maximum clamping effect when the projecting arms of the flange are brought together, the curved part of the latter then applying perfectly at all points on the tube.

The accompanying drawing shows schematically a non-limiting example of execution of the subject of the invention.
FIG. 1 is a partial side view of the various constituent parts of a device according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an identical view schematizing only the flange and the clamping bolt.
In these figures, the reference 1 indicates the parallel lateral branches of a longitudinal seat cross or of the underlying frame of a chair. Between these elements 1 can, in a sleeve ± be raised or lowered the rod or the tube 2 of the backrest, this sleeve enveloping in this case half of the tube 1 and having two parallel side flanges .4., Directed towards the side. top and enclosing a horizontal journal fixed between the two branches 1 of the frame.
The sleeve 1 rests inferiorly on the straightened ends ¯6 which present, towards the sleeve, a curved edge 7, arranged so that it constitutes a complementary enveloping for the periphery of the tube 2 (figure 2) A small space remains between the free edges 8 of the straightened ends 6.
The two flanges 4 have downwards an orifice, circular in one and square in the other, for the introduction of a bolt 9. This bolt comprises towards its head 10 a square part 11 ', through sant the square hole of the flange, in order to prevent rotation of the bolt. The end 11 of the bolt is threaded and it passes through curved slots 17 of the branches 1, the center of these curved slots coinciding with the axis of the journal 5.
Externally, a washer 12, a sleeve 13 and a washer 14 are threaded onto the bolt 2, after which a nut 15 with a handwheel 16 is screwed onto said bolt. When the nut 15 is tightened, the branches 1 of the cross of the seat are compressed, which results in the flanges 4 being biased towards each other so that the sleeve 1 is tightened around the tube 2, simultaneously with the clamping of the flanges ¯4 against the branches 1 in the position inclination of the sleeve. The journal 5 is surrounded by a nozzle 20 with a median opening 18 into which is introduced a longitudinal rib 19, integral with the tube 2, this arrangement preventing rotation of the tube around its own axis.
The sleeve 1 is in this case suspended from the lateral flanges 4 directed upwards; of course, said flanges could equally well be directed downwards, the slots 17 then being placed above the journal 5.
