<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improvements to automatic loaders of coke or other fuels.
The present invention relates to automatic feeders of coke or other fuels, which feed coke from a hopper to a hearth, such as a grate-feed hearth, using a grate. a feed worm rotating in the base of the hopper and a feed trough directing the coke towards the base of the hearth.
Because of the highly abrasive nature to coke, wear and tear of the magazine elements in contact with this material has heretofore required such frequent element replacement that heating has become uneconomical.
The object of the present invention is to reduce the necessary maintenance expenses of automatic coke loaders.

or other fuels.
An automatic feeder of coke or other fuel according to the present invention has a hopper base and a feed trough of rectangular sections, the surfaces in contact with coke or other fuel, of the base. the hopper and the feed trough being spaced a substantial distance from the conveying auger.
The base of the hopper and the feed trough may be coated with a replaceable material, eg applied in the form of bricks which are not in contact with the conveying auger and which constitute the surfaces in contact with fuel from the feed trough.
The covering can be provided in the form of separate sections or in one piece,
The feed trough is preferably channel-shaped, that is, it does not have a continuously closed top or cover.
The bricks can be flat or have a channel or U-shaped section.
The bricks can be ceramic, hydraulic cement or hard cast iron, or they can be stone.
The distance that is provided between the coating surfaces of the. base of the hopper and feed trough, and the conveying auger, results in the existence of a mass of coke or other fuel of a certain thickness between the end surface of the worm and said coating surfaces.
Support blocks for the worm screw and a sliding plate of simple shape cast in approximately the dimensions necessary and therefore requiring no machining are provided, said blocks and said sliding plate being able to be fitted.

cited above, a support block 8 of the conveying screw having a semi-cylindrical surface 9 cast or, if desired, molded into a shell, intended for the lower part of the outer surface of the conveying screw 10, the diameter of the bearing surface being a little larger than the diameter of the screw.
The block 8 has slits or cavities 11 cast in its surface, intended to contain fixing screws 12 screwed through the walls of the trough 4 and preventing movement of the block 8 in the longitudinal direction of the block. trough 4. The block 8 is held by the side walls of the blade 4 against any lateral movement and by the bottom of the trough 4 against any downward movement Ci.6.
A sliding plate comprising a block 14 of hard cast iron having a semi-cylindrical surface 15 cast or, if desired, molded into a shell, lying a short distance from the top of the outer surface of the conveying screw 10, is fixed, in vertical and horizontal correspondence with the block 8, to the trough 4 using slots 16 made there, pivoting bolts 17 on the trough 4, and wing nuts on the pivoting bolts. tants 17 and the base 1 of the hopper with the aid of the slotted ear 19 and a screw 20 which fixes it to the base 1 of the hopper.
The sliding plate regulates the quantity of coke which passes through the base 1 of the hopper into the feed trough 4 and prevents the block 8 from performing an upward movement.
The front sides or the front and rear sides of the block 8 and of the slide plate block 14 can also advantageously be tempered to make them harder.
A hard cast iron conveying screw adjustment block 21 is provided at the other end of the feed trough and has a cast and, if desired, tempered opening 22, the cross section of which is a flattened circle at the bottom. base, the radius of the circle being greater than the outer radius of the transport screw 10

running through the opening. The block 21 has cavities or windows 23 which are cast in its walls, with the aid of which it is fixed to the blade and prevented from performing these longitudinal movements, thanks to screws 24 passing through the sides of the block. blade 4 and penetrating into these cavities or slots 23.
The block 21 is attached to the trough 4 using threaded bolts 25 and nuts 26 intended to attach the trough 4 to the. the base of the hearth 7, the nuts z6 and the ends of the threaded bolts 25 being arranged in recesses 27 in the block 21. Recesses 28 are provided in the block 21 to contain nuts and the ends of the threaded bolts 29 on which these nuts are screwed and forming part of the system for fixing the nut 4 to the base of the hearth 7. The front sides or the front and rear sides of the adjustment block can also be hardened.
The distance between the coated walls and the coated bottom of the trough and the axis of the screw 10, is considerably greater than the radius of the outer surface of the conveying screw which, for this reason, is only in contact with the support block Ce) and a part directed towards the top of the opening 22 in the adjustment block 21.
The adjustment block 21 not only supports the transport screw 10 near its discharge end, and thus prevents contact between the transport screw 10 and the hearth, but also protects the hearth, at the opening. 'fuel admission, against wear due to abrasion
Because of the presence of bricks 2 between the coke on the one hand and the. base 1 of the hopper and the feed trough 4 - on the other hand, the base 1 has the hopper and the feed trough 4 are not subject to wear due to the abrasive action of the core which passes through it thanks to the action of the transport screw 10.
When a brick 2 is worn it can be removed and replaced with a new one.

brick in a very economical way. ' In addition, since the surfaces of the bricks are not in contact with the trans screw.
port 10 but are at a certain distance from it, the coke in contact with the surfaces of the bricks is not transported with high speed and under high pressure along these surfaces, and the abrasive action on these surfaces is therefore reduced accordingly and, for this reason, the Brick 2 can be used for longer periods *
Since the parts of blocks 8 and 21 and of slide plate 14 exposed to coke are hard cast iron and surface hardened, blocks and 1a. sliding plate wear very slowly under abrasive action.
When they are worn out, they can be replaced with new blocks or sliding plates inexpensively, because the blocks and hard parts of the sliding plates do not have to be machined, so that said blocks and sliding plates can be produced economically.
The trough liner, blocks and sliding plate described above can also be used in automatic loaders for other fuels, resulting in less aura ion and lower cost of spare parts * .Claims.
