<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"Device for grinding main journals and crankshaft connecting rod journals."
This invention relates to a device or a machine tool intended for the grinding of crankshafts and for grinding both the main journals and the connecting rod journals by a single centering of the workpiece, several grinding wheels being able to be provided for. allow simultaneous machining of several or all of the journals.
It is already known to rectify the individual connecting rod journals, by centering the crankshaft, using a grinding wheel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
which correspondingly follows the eccentric movement of the journal to be machined. However, the oscillating movement of the grinding wheel is in this case taken directly from the journal to be ground, which entails several drawbacks. The most serious drawback arises from the fact that the oscillatory, and therefore irregular, movement of the grinding wheel causes inertial forces which cannot be balanced and which limit machining speed and precision.
Another disadvantage arises from the fact that the oscillatory movement of the grinding wheel immediately affects the journal to be machined, which leads to a considerable and above all variable deformation of the workpiece during the operation due to the forces of. variable inertia. A third defect of the known device lies in the fact that, if the obtaining of the oscillatory movement of the tool by a method of copying the journal to be machined, it is true, thanks to an appropriate arrangement of the device to be copied, grinding to a circular shape of an oval journal at the start of the operation, the position of its center after the end of the grinding operation depends only on the shape of the pin before machining and cannot be influenced by the machine setting.
Thus, it is not possible to rectify the position of a journal center if it is incorrect before machining.
Consequently, the known device does not respond from the point of view of working speed and hence; performance, nor from the point of view of precision, under conditions of mass production, and it is therefore used exclusively for carrying out repairs.
In the device according to the invention, the center of the grinding wheel is subjected to a positive circular displacement which corresponds to that of the center of the connecting rod journal so as to completely remedy the aforementioned drawbacks. The masses of the device to be rectified, which perform according to the invention a movement of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
uniform rotation, can be balanced completely without difficulty. The control movement is not taken from the workpiece, which excludes mutual influences between the tool and the workpiece. Finally, thanks to the continuous adjustment of both the phase and the eccentricity of the center of the grinding wheel, it is possible to obtain any desired position of the center of the journal to be machined, regardless of the shape and position thereof before machining.
Compared to grinding machines using a grinding wheel with a stationary axis, which were heretofore employed exclusively for the mass production of crankshafts, the device according to the invention also allows a number of important advantages to be obtained. Thanks to the centering of the workpiece, the devices which were previously essential for an eccentric assembly are eliminated. For the same reason, the workpiece is not subjected to any stress caused by centrifugal force, which makes it possible to choose a higher speed of rotation. In addition, the bilateral control of the workpiece, which was heretofore necessary during eccentric mounting to prevent deformations caused by the driving torque, is eliminated, which simplifies the construction of the grinding machine and reduces its total weight.
However, the main advantage of the device according to the invention is the possibility of machining at the same time in a single operation, several journals of a crankshaft or all of them, as well for the main journals. as for the connecting rod journals.
By further equipping the machine with two aligned assembly tables which can be brought as desired into the working position as in the embodiment below, it is possible to check during the machining of one part to be machined the second part. already finished by leaving it in its clamping position, to then exchange it for another part to be machined, which appreciably reduces the duration of the auxiliary operations. He becomes
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
thus possible, by using for example a machine with four wheels, to reduce to less than a quarter compared to known machines the time required for machining the journals of a crankshaft with four bends.
The description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawings given by way of non-limiting examples, will make it possible to better understand the invention.
Fig. 1 is a block diagram of the mode of operation.
Fig. 2 is a diagram of the control of the movement of the grinding wheel.
Figs. 3 and 4 show, in elevation and in longitudinal partial section, a simplification (simplified construction) of the control and assembly of the grinding wheel.
Figs. 5 and 6 show, in longitudinal section and in elevation, the balancing of the weight of the grinding wheel, which rotates eccentrically.
Figs. 7,8 and 9 show a single spindle machine, front view, in plan and in profile.
Figs. 10, 11 and 12 show a four-spindle assembly when grinding the journals of a four-elbow crankshaft.
According to fig. 1, the crankshaft to be machined rotates at a uniform angular speed in the direction of the arrow around its central axis 1. The flanges are designated by 2, while 3 represents the journal to be machined using the grinding wheel 4. In addition to the most advanced position of the journal 2 and of the grinding wheel 4¯ shown in solid lines, two other positions have been indicated in phantom, which are reached respectively after a rotation of the workpiece of 120 and 240.
The grinding wheel spindle is driven by means of a belt from a motor (not shown in fig.l).
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
It is mounted eccentrically in a bush 6, so as to have an eccentricity e1, this bush being arranged in turn with an eccentricity e, in the drum 1 journalled in the grinding wheel support. In this way, the total eccentricity e of the grinding wheel spindle is the geometric sum of the partial eccentricities e1 and e2. When these are identical (e1 = e2), the total eccentricity e can be gradually adjusted from e1- e2 = O up to e1 + e2 = 2 r1, by rotating the eccentric sleeve 6 in the drum 7 The total eccentricity is adjusted, in a manner explained below, in such a way that it is equal to the eccentricity of the crankshaft journal to be rectified.
Drum 1 rotates in synchronism and in phase with the journal to be ground, which is thus machined with the eccentricity and phase established. The machined diameter is determined by setting the grinding wheel support on the line connecting the centers of drum 1 and workpiece 1.
In fig. 2 is shown how the movement of the grinding wheel is controlled. References 1 to 7, as well as el, e2 and ± correspond to fig. 1. FIG. 2 further shows the drive motor mounted in the holder. spindle holder and electrically or mechanically coupled to the drive device of the workpiece, rotating in strict synchronism. This motor drives the drum 7 journalled in the grinding wheel holder 13 via the pinion 9 and the toothed wheel 10.
The same figure shows the device for the continuous adjustment of the eccentricity of the grinding wheel. This adjustment is effected by the relative rotation of the eccentric sleeve 6 and of the drum 7, which are locked with respect to each other during the grinding operation. In order to be able to carry out this adjustment without modifying the phase of the resulting eccentricity e, the eccentric bush 6 and the drum 1 are coupled to one another by a planetary gear 16, 17, 18 and 19.
When locking the internal toothed wheel 16 of the planetary gear in the grinding wheel support 13
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
using the stop pin 12 and the locking device arranged on the outside, namely the locking teeth 11, and that the drum 1 is rotated by means of the flywheel 14 and the pinion 15 , the control device $ being disengaged and the locking between the eccentric sleeve 6 and the drum Y being removed, the toothed wheel 17 rolls on the stationary internal toothing 16 so as to cause, by means of the intermediate wheel 18 and of the toothing 19, a rotation of the eccentric sleeve 6 in the opposite direction and by a double angle.
Given that, as already explained above, the eccentricities e1 and e2 are identical, the direction of the resulting eccentricity remains unchanged, by application of the geometric laws.
When the desired eccentricity is obtained, the locking device (not shown) between the eccentric sleeve 6 and the drum 2 is engaged and the stop pin 12 is withdrawn.
By now operating the handwheel 14, the control device 8 and 2. still being disengaged, the drum 1 can be displaced angularly relative to the workpiece, the eccentricity remaining constant, so as to allow the phase to be adjusted. When this adjustment is also completed, the manual control 14 and 15 are disengaged, using a clutch operating without play, and the motor control device 8, 9 is engaged. The assembly is then ready to operate.
There is shown in FIG. 3 a longitudinal section of the assembly of the grinding wheel holder spindle, showing the grinding wheel spindle 5, the eccentric sleeve 6 and the drum 7, as well as their bearings 20 and 21 provided in the grinding wheel support 13 (Fig . 2).
In addition, FIG. 3 shows the control pulley 26 of the grinding wheel 4, as well as the belt 24.
In fig. 4 is shown in elevation the control device of the grinding wheel, the references 1 to 7 corresponding to the preceding figures. The drive motor 22 is mounted in
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the grinding wheel support 13 (Fig. 2) in a fixed manner, so as not to participate in the movement of the grinding wheel 4. The transmission of force from the stationary motor to the grinding spindle 5, which turns in synchronism with the journal 3 to be machined, is obtained by means of two belt transmissions 23 and 24.
The drive pulley 25 is mounted on the motor shaft, while the driven pulley 26 is disposed on the grinding wheel spindle 5. The return pulley 27, which receives the two belts 23 and 24, is guided. by two pivoting arms 28 and 29, journalled on the motor shaft 22 and on the grinding wheel spindle 5 respectively. In this way, a length of the two belt drives is obtained which is independent of the movement of the grinding wheel spindle 5.
The mounting of the grinding wheel spindle is designed in such a way that the rotating eccentric masses, with the exception of the grinding wheel, are fully balanced regardless of the amplitude of the eccentricities obtained.
The balancing of the weight of the wheel rotating in an eccentric manner which varies according to the diameter and the width of the latter, is ensured by the device shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
The references 4 to 7 as well as 21 and 22 correspond to the previous figures. A connecting rod 30 is journaled on the grinding wheel spindle, the upper end of this connecting rod being articulated on the two-arm lever 31. The second arm of the two-arm lever 31, which is pivoted in the grinding wheel support 13 ( Fig. 2), is designed in such a way that its effective lever arm, i.e. the distance between the movable nut 32 and the axis of the lever, can be changed by rotating the spindle 33 to using bevel gears 34 and 35 and flywheel 36.
The movable nut is subjected to the action of the compression spring 37, the other end of which bears on the grinding wheel support 13 (Fig. 2), the tension of this spring being calculated from so as to balance the weight of the grinding wheel 4¯ suspended from the connecting rod 30. The adaptation to the variable weight of the grinding wheel 4. is obtained by the variation of the arm
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
effective lever of the compression spring using the flywheel 36, a graduation (not shown) associated with the flywheel making it possible to read the set weight.
In figs. 7, 8 and 9 is shown from the front, in plan and in profile respectively, a machine tool equipped with the device according to the invention. The assembly table 39 carrying the fixed headstock 40 and the tailstock 41 is arranged on the bed 38 so as to be able to be moved in the longitudinal direction. A flywheel 42 and a second flywheel 43 make it possible to ensure the longitudinal displacement of the workpiece 44. clamped between the fixed and mobile headstocks, as well as the adjustment of the grinding wheel 4. The grinding wheel 4 is mounted on the support. , grinding wheel holder 13, which is stationary, while the grinding wheel 4. moves in the manner described above.
The grinding wheel support 13 is placed on a wedge-shaped base 45, so that its adjustment is carried out along an oblique line directed downwards, to reduce as much as possible the height of the laying of the fixed and mobile headstocks, so as to make the machine as stable as possible.
In figs. 10, 11 and 12 is shown from the front, in plan and in profile respectively, by way of example of a machine for grinding multiple crankshafts intended for the mass production of crankshafts, a device allowing the machining of four journals in a single operation. In front and behind the machine bed, two grinding wheel supports 13, 13a, 13b, and 13c are provided, also using inclined guides to reduce as much as possible the height of the points of the fixed and mobile headstocks and the width of the assembly table bench. The grinding blocks are independent of each other, so that they can be individually adjusted both as regards the total eccentricity and to be adapted to the radius of the crankshaft and the phase.
In figs. 10, 11 and 12 are shown two assembly tables aligned, which allows to place two fixed dolls 40
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
and 40a and two movable dolls 41 and 41a, as well as two workpieces 44 and 44a. It is thus possible, during the machining of a crankshaft, to check the second crankshaft already rectified in its clamping position, and to exchange it for another part to be machined without wasting time. When the grinding of the crankshaft during machining is completed, the next crankshaft, which had been clamped in the meantime, is brought into the working position by a simple longitudinal displacement of the tables.
It goes without saying that without departing from the scope of the invention, modifications can be made to the embodiments which have just been described.
CLAIMS.
Device for grinding main journals and crankshaft connecting rod journals, the workpiece rotating during grinding around the axis of the main journals, characterized in that the center of the journal to be ground on the workpiece and the center of the grinding wheel perform identical movements.
