<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Heating appliance.
The subject of the invention is a domestic heating appliance comprising a solid fuel charging grid, this appliance being usable as a fireplace and a stove. It can be applied to any such heating appliance, whether or not it includes a domestic boiler and, also, whether or not it includes an installation for cooking food.
The expression "domestic heating appliance" is used here to designate both a heating installation for a residential house, a heating installation for a hotel, public waiting hall and all other places. in which open fireplaces or closed stoves are ordinarily used, whether or not provided with a boiler, an oven, or means for cooking food.
One of the objects of the invention is the production of a domestic heating appliance, such as a fireplace or a stove, which not only gives a good performance, as a heating appliance, but also gives, : at the same time, the gaiety inherent in any open fire heater.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another object of the invention is to obtain a good yield in radiant heat emitted as a free fire.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a domestic heating appliance capable of glowing coke in an open grate.
According to the present invention, a domestic heating appliance, such as a fireplace or a stove comprising a grate or a chamber for charging a solid fuel, is provided with a radiant heat reflector inclined upward and forward. of the apparatus and leaving above the rear part of the grille reflecting on. the heat rises from the fireplace outside and this appliance is also provided with a main smoke flue and an auxiliary funnel flue, these two flues leaving the grate at distinct points l ' one on the other and placed one above the other in such a way, on the one hand, to induce a draft through the charre of the ignited fuel and, also, to draw products of the combustion of the surface of this load.
According to another characteristic of the present invention, a domestic heating appliance, such as a fireplace or a stove, comprises a grate or a combustion chamber receiving solid fuel, said chamber being closed at the front and provided with a main flue rising vertically and starting from a level below the normal level of the fuel in the grate, so as to determine a top-down draft through the fuel, and from an auxiliary flue rising from bottom to top and starting approximately from the normal level of the fuel in the grate or from a level slightly above the normal level,
this auxiliary flue being intended to entrain the products of combustion which are released from the upper part of the fuel charge, a caloric heat reflector being disposed above the grate and extending from the bottom upwards and towards the bottom. 'front starting from the rear of the grille and a level located substantially%. the same height as or slightly above the aforementioned auxiliary flue, this reflector reflecting outside the heat from the top of the fuel load.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In principle, it is preferable that the smoke flues start from the back of the grate; however, without departing from the limits of the present invention, in certain cases; it may be advantageous to run one of these flues from one side of the. grid, or both, on both sides of the grid.
An important feature of the present invention is the production of a domestic heating appliance, such as a fireplace or a stove, comprising a combustion chamber or a combustion grate intended to contain a load of solid fuel, and in which a heat reflector is disposed near said fuel load, so as to reflect heat outside that apparatus, and in which an upward flue of fwnea leading from said combustion chamber or grate is established to induce a draft along the front face of this reflector and through the load of edible and is separated from this reflector by a layer of this load of fuel.
Another characteristic of the invention resides in an apparatus of the type defined above in which an auxiliary smoke flue is provided with an adjustment butterfly intended to modify the draft induced through the combustion chamber by said flue.
Preferably, in transverse vertical section, the reflector is curved upwards and towards the front of the apparatus and, in horizontal section, it may have a planar or curved shape and with a reflector is provided, on its sides, of. cheeks which are parallel, or alternatively, slightly converging towards the front and the anterior edges of these cheeks are drawn so as to correspond approximately with the side edges of the anterior opening of the hearth of ,, - 1- ' apparatus.
At its upper part, this reflector can be hinged to the heating appliance, so that it can be tilted forward to induce a vertical draft and thus act as a means of ventilation and, preferably, the heating. reflector is also easily removable to allow it to be completely removed from the chimney or stove.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention the space located above the reflector is normally isolated from the chimney by means of a door which can be opened or removed day allowing the grate to be used as a standard grate. draft when the reflector is removed or use it as an incinerator when the reflector is tilted to its previous position to act as a ventilation means.
The upper ends of the smoke carnannaxes are preferably provided with adjustable parillons by means of a common member established in such a way that one of these butterflies opens when the other closes, control of these butterflies being established in such a way that the flap of the auxiliary smoke hood cannot be closed completely in order to maintain at all times a certain degree of draft through the auxiliary smoke flue, Day ensure the evacuation of the 13. combustion released on the surface of the ignited fuel charge.
These flues open, preferably, into a smoke box in which the aforementioned butterflies are mounted and this box is provided with an opening for connection to a chimney.
It should be noted that the arrangement of the flues (the smoke in relation to the grille and to the heat reflector is such that a draft directed from top to bottom is created along the reflector and keeps it relatively cold avoiding any undue deposit of dust on it, so that a moderate cleaning of this reflector is always sufficient to keep it reflective for long periods of time.
The present invention can be used advantageously in the production of a heating apparatus comprising either a hot water boiler or an installation for the preparation of food, as well as, simultaneously, these two arrangements. In the case of a kitchen installation, one of the smoke rings may start from the fireplace or the stove and end up in the cooking installation. Such smoke flues can be set up as variations of the previous ones, but they can also be used in addition to the main flue and the auxiliary flue already mentioned.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
An ordinary hot water boiler of rectangular cross section can be established behind the fireplace, and the main flue gas duct can pass below this boiler. Preferably, however, a relatively deep boiler is disposed behind the chimney or stove and the main flue, and preferably also the auxiliary flue passes through this boiler.
This boiler can be made of steel and can be used together with a heater.
According to the present invention, also, a grid comprising bars constituted by water tubes connected to the boiler can be used; this grid can be formed, in whole or in part, using such water tubes.
The grate or stove of the present invention may, if desired, be provided with a door mounted on the front of the apparatus; this door can be glass or mica moné in a pivoting frame. At the top of this door, suitable openings must be made for the admission of the air which passes, from top to bottom, along the reflector.
In the case of a stove, the door can be mounted on a movable support sliding in guides arranged laterally to the stove, these guides being adapted to receive the door when the latter is open. Thus, this door can be opened and then slide backwards with its support in the guides established laterally on the stove.
The invention can be applied advantageously to the establishment of a stove for heating two adjacent rooms, the main room being heated directly by the fireplace and the other room being heated by the rear part of the stove protruding therein. here, through the partition separating these two rooms.
Such a stove may have, in plan and in elevation, a rectangular shape and it may include, in its rear part, a boiler of a height equal to its height, apart from the height of the smoke box. .
The back side of the boiler can be made of metal
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
corrugated so as to increase'3 heat transmission through it.
The accompanying drawings, given by way of example, and which should not in any way limit the scope of the present invention, show a heating apparatus constructed in accordance with the principles defined above.
In these drawings:
Fig.l is a front view of this device.
Fig. 2 is a view of the same apparatus taken from the left side of Fig. 1.
FIG. 5 is a vertical section taken along the axis of FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is a schematic section taken between lines IV-IV of Fig. 3, this section showing the position and shape of the reflector and the flues.
In these various figures, the same reference signs designate the same elements.
The heating appliance shown in these figures, an appliance that can be used both as a fireplace and as a stove, comprises a metal casing 1 in the form of a box partially open on its front face.
The height and width of this casing are appropriate for those of a standard chimney or stove.
A transverse horizontal partition 2 parallel above the casing 1 delimits, with this top and the side walls of the casing, a smoke box 5, while a vertical partition 4 located in front of the rear wall of the casing, delimits a compartment 5 reserved for fuel and @ combustion; in the lower part of this compartment 5 is the combustion chamber 6; the same partition 4 also serves to delimit the capacity of a boiler 7 between this partition 4, the rear vertical wall and the sides of the casing 1.
The combustion chamber or grate 6 is closed, at the front of the appliance, by a part 8 of the front face of the appliance and provided with a refractory lining 9 made of clay or other ceramic material, this lining extending all along this front part 8, from the sides and the rear part of the grid.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The grid comprises a set of bars 10 which, here, are oscillating and actuated by a lever 11, outside the casing of the stove, by means of a transverse shaft 12 and an oscillating bar 15.
A heat reflector 14 established with side cheeks 15, slightly converging on the side of the front face of the stove and arranged vertically, starts from a point slightly above the normal fuel level at the rear of the grate and ends at the upper front edge of compartment 5 of the fireplace. The front edges of the side cheeks 15 are folded outwardly at 26.
At the upper end of each of the side cheeks of this reflector, a stud 25 is fixed (shown in dotted line in Figure 5); this stud forms a pivot and rests in a notch or in a U-shaped part (not shown) mounted on the vertical edges of the opening 16 established in the front face 17 of the casing 1. Thus, the reflector can pivot from the normal position in which it is shown in solid lines in the section in fig.5 to the position shown in dotted lines. in this same figure, last position in which it can act as a means of ventilation to produce an upward draft of the stove.
. A main flue 18 runs from the rear of the grate at a level significantly below the normal level of the fuel charge in the grate; flue is oriented substantially vertically in the stove, while an auxiliary flue 19, similar to the previous one, starts from a level located slightly above the normal level of the fuel in the grate. The horizontal section of each of these flues grows from bottom to top: of these flues ends in partition 2 where it opens into smoke box 5; the products of combustion pass from this smoke box, through opening 20, into the chimney to which the appliance is connected.
Since the front face of the grate is closed, the main flue 18 'determines a downward draft through the fuel load; draft is indicated by arrows 21 and 22 while the auxiliary flue 19 carries all the products
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of combustion escaping from the surface of the burning fuel charge, products which would otherwise rise vertically and foul the reflector.
This arrangement of the smoke flues also has the advantage of determining an air draft from top to bottom, along the front face of the reflector 14; in this way, it is automatically kept cool and clean.
The combustion can be regulated by means of a main throttle 27 and an auxiliary throttle 28 mounted respectively on the main flue and the auxiliary flue. The butterflies are provided with legs 29 and 30 provided with nipples serving as their pivots and resting in U-shaped bearings and mounted on the transverse partition 2; in this way, these butterflies can be easily removed from these bearings and dismantled. Each of these butterflies has a heel.
33 for butterfly 27 and 33 'for butterfly 28; these heels are respectively engaged with cams 54 and 55 mounted on a camshaft 56, the bearings of which are carried by the rear and front faces of the. smoke box 3; this shaft is controlled from the front of this smoke box by means of a flywheel or a handle 57. The cams 34 and 35 are combined and wedged with respect to each other on the camshaft 36 so that the butterfly 27 opens when the butterfly 28 closes and vice versa. Thus, when the butterfly 27 is slightly or completely closed, the butterfly 28 is fully or little open.
However, the cam 55 is set in such a way that the auxiliary throttle 28 is never fully closed and its maximum degree of closure is that shown in figure 5.
So there is always, at least, some draw possible to. through the auxiliary flue 19 to ensure the evacuation of the combustion products to the surface of the fuel mass and thus prevent fouling of the reflector.
A flywheel or an operating button 37 actuates the camshaft 56 through a sleeve 40 in which the front end of this
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
camshaft is received; this end is split at 41 to receive a pin 42 forming a radial projection on this camshaft 56.
The front end of the shaft 56 abuts against a good spring 45 housed in the sleeve 40, this spring allowing expansion of the shaft 56 under the action of temperature and preventing it from jamming between the rear of the shaft. the boiler and the button or handwheel 57.
The transverse partition 2 is provided with a door 44 articulated on a hinge 45 and held in its closed position by means ('' a latch 46.
