<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
1 - Le manipulant ou le dispositif d'actionnement est dé- @ chargé de tout effort moteur à exercer sur les touches de la ma- chine; il exerce seulement sur celles-ci, une action de déclen. chement correspondant à un effort mécanique qui peut être aussi faible qu'on le désire;
2 - La puissance de frappe est,,par conséquent, indépendante de l'action dactylographique du manipulant, ou de celle du dispo- sitif d'actionnement et, par suite, elle est parfaitement uniforme;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Typing mechanism for machine characters using a mechanical typewriter.
The present invention is applicable to all machines using a device which makes it possible to write mechanically by actuating bars bearing printed characters coming to strike the surface, of paper or the like, which is to receive the printing. It therefore applies, in particular but not limited to ordinary typewriters.
We already have. observed, on the one hand, that on the same document typed by means of these machines or similar machines, the force of the impression which depends on the force exerted by the operator on the keys of the machine, n is never perfectly uniform, whatever the skill of the handler, on the other hand that the typing in bundles of several simul-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
immediately, requires that the operator exert on the keys a force the intensity of which quickly becomes very tiring, without obtaining, however, in the last copies of the bundle, an impression having the desirable strength. These defects are also prejudicial to the correct typing of "Stencil" type papers.
They also exist on mechanical writing devices in which the typing energy is independent of the manipulator.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate these serious drawbacks of systems to be written mechanically, of known types.
It makes it possible, in fact, to ensure the automaticity and regularity of the typing, at the same time as it provides the possibility of being able to adjust the power of the typing, or for each of the characters of the machine. , either for the whole, or for only part of these characters. It also makes it possible to significantly increase the typing rate of the machine.
The invention is described below, first, for the sake of simplification of the description, in its application to the control of a character bar taken in isolation, then in its normal application to a typewriter. mechanically, or similar machine.
With reference to the attached drawing:
In its rest position Pr, the character bar Br is under the action of a mainspring Rm, under tension, which tends to make it oscillate according to the arrow Fl around its axis 1, towards its position. strike Pf.
It is locked in its rest position by a triggering device Vd, in such a way that, when the manipulator or any triggering mechanism of an appropriate nature acts on this device, the bar Br, released, obeys the action. action of said spring and performs its striking movement.
The impact power can therefore be adjusted by making
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
vary the Initial tension of the spring, for example by moving its attachment piece Pm.
The character bar, after having executed its rrappe, is recalled to its rest position by the action of an electromagnet E which is automatically excited when the character bar must return from its striking position to its rest position .
This return action simultaneously supplies the energy necessary to energize the mainspring for the next striking action of the same character bar,
At the end of this recall action, the character bar is automatically locked by its trigger device.
Thanks to these characteristics:
1 - The operator or the actuating device is relieved of any motor effort to be exerted on the buttons of the machine; it exerts only on these, an action of trigger. chement corresponding to a mechanical force which can be as low as desired;
2 - The striking power is, consequently, independent of the typing action of the manipulator, or of that of the actuating device and, consequently, it is perfectly uniform;
3 - This impact power can be easily and quickly adjusted to the value suitable for each type of job.
4 - The typing rate can be significantly increased.
The invention will now be described in its general concept, that is to say in its application to any machine using a mechanical typewriter.
The character bars, such as Br, of the mechanical writing device, articulated around their respective axes 1, oscillate between the rest position Pr, and the typing position Pf; each of these bars is linked to two kinematic chains, the drive chain and the return chain, made up of elements in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
variable number whose movements are related to each other.
Each striking element is thus made up of a character bar linked to its drive chain and to its return chain, -whose movements are thus made integral-, and a trigger locking system, Vd, which normally keeps the assembly in the rest position.
In the case illustrated in the drawing, the drive chain and the return chain are each reduced to a single element and these are embodied in a single member, Cm-Cr, pivoting around an axis 2.
A motor spring Rm is attached by one of its ends to an element of each of the driving chains; it is intended to provide the work necessary to ensure the striking of the corresponding character and, for this purpose, it presents an initial tension when the striking element is in the rest position (case of the figure). Its characteristics and initial tension are determined to ensure the desired punching power for the corresponding character.
The other end of each of the driving springs, Rm, is attached to one or more driving parts Pm, fixed during the striking cycle, and whose positions, adjustable by conventional devices, make it possible to adjust the power of typing of all the characters of the machine,
The action of each mainspring ensures the movement of the corresponding character from its rest position, after unlocking, to the typing position, with the desired power, on the surface which the characters are to impress.
A return part Qr, unique and common for all the return chains, is arranged so as to be in contact by a unilateral connection with one of the elements of each of the cat.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
recall nes when all the striking elements are in the rest position. This return piece is arranged so as to move, in a translational or rotational movement (in the example around an axis 3), under the action of the movement of any of the elements of the return chains -with which it is required to remain in contact under the action of a slight antagonist spring (not shown) - when the corresponding striking element passes from the rest position to the striking position.
A system of electromagnets E act in parallel, when their electric circuit is closed, on the return part Qr in the direction opposite to the movement that this part performs for its passage from the rest position to the position of hit; the action 'of this system is thus opposed to the action of each of the driving springs and its power is greater than that of each of these springs, so that, when a character bar is in a different position, from its rest position, if the electric circuit is closed at this time, this bar is brought back to this rest position by the action of the electromagnet system via the return piece Qr .
The action of this system can also be determined so as to be able to return several character bars triggered simultaneously to the rest position.
The movement of the return piece resulting from the movement of any one of the return chains causes the operation of an electrical contactor Ce, of any suitable type. When the character bar starts from the rest position under the action of its mainspring Rm, the electric circuit being open in this position, this contactor Ce ensures the closing of the circuit when the character has reached the neighborhood of his
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
striking position, which causes it to return to its rest position after having given the strike.
The contactor then opens the electrical circuit when the character reaches the vicinity of its rest position in which it is automatically locked, or returns again to its striking position depending on the organization of the locking system. The striking cycle is thus finished.
The two strings, driving and recall, corresponding to each character, can include common elements, their elements are in variable number which can even be reduced to zero, the driving and recall actions being, in this case, exerted directly on the character bar.
The organization of the mechanism which controls the release lock Vd of each character is adapted to each user machine; this lock acts either directly on the character bar, or on any other part whose movement is linked to it. It @ must be organized in such a way that each lock, after having released, by its erasure, by pressing the key, or equivalent triggering device, the corresponding character bar, must be able to return to locked position after a time interval shorter than the duration of the striking cycle of this bar.
Thanks to the characteristic device of the invention, the striking power of each character depends only on the mechanical characteristics of each striking element and of the motor spring, this power being able to be adjusted, either individually for each character by adjustment of each mainspring, either for all or part of the characters, by adjustment of the driving parts.
