<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Machine for grinding shafts with cranks, cams, eccentrics or the like."
The present invention relates to improvements relating to machines used to grind crankshafts, cams, eccentrics or the like, and its object is to present a machine for grinding the crank journal. or any other offset part, while the shaft or similar body is mounted between centers. The only installation necessary for the rectification of any journals which may be on the crankshaft consists of its mounting on its centers, while other similar surfaces, such as eccentrics or cams which are eccentric, may. also grind well with the machines that are the subject of this invention.
The present invention is characterized by a drive wheel having an elastic tire, a grinding wheel in friction contact with said drive wheel, a pivotally mounted support for said drive wheels.

and grinding wheel, so that the grinding wheel and the drive wheel follow the evolutions of the crank or similar body, a member arranged to engage with the crank journal or similar member in order to keep it in contact with the grinding wheel and means for adjusting the grinding wheel to the desired degree of grinding.
In the attached drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the improved crankshaft grinding machine.
Figure 2 is a sectional end view taken along line 11-11 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section taken along line III-III of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional plan along line IV-IV of Figure 2.
According to the drawings, the machine comprises a frame 1 arranged to carry a support 2 from which the mechanism for grinding the crankshaft is suspended from pivoting, which mechanism is coupled to the crankshaft 3 during grinding. itself mounted between points that can slide on the bench 4 of the machine.
The crankshaft grinding machine referred to above comprises a rocker 5 which is pivotally mounted substantially at its center in side supports 6, 6 which in turn are pivotally mounted at their upper ends. in the support 2 like a pendulum.
The grinding wheel 7 is mounted freely between the two members making up the balance 5 and it is driven by the drive wheel 8 by friction contact with said wheel.
The drive wheel 8 is fixed to a pulley 9 and the pulley as well as the drive wheel turn idle on the pivot journal 10 of the balance 5 and the side supports 6,6. Pulley 9 is driven by a belt from a second pulley.

lie 11 mounted on a shaft 12 carried by the support 2, the shaft 12 in this example being shown as actuated by an electric motor 13.
The supports 6,6 are pivotally mounted at their upper ends around the shaft 12 in order to obtain the pendulum suspension referred to. A shield 14 is mounted on the balance 5 which carries the grinding wheel 7; to this shield is attached a pendant member 15 arranged to be placed in contact with the surface to be ground, for example, the crank journal 16 of the crankshaft 3, in which case a V-block 17 would be used. and this pendant member is mounted in such a way with respect to the bouulier 14 that it is adjustable relative to the latter on the pivot journal 18, so that by bringing the pendant member closer to the grinding wheel using of the screw and nut mechanism 19, the grinding wheel is given the desired degree of grinding.
The crank journal 16 is held in the V-block 17 with the help of the lever 20 which is controlled by the hand screw 2I, which tends to push the crank journal 16 inside the V-block 17.
Leaf springs 22, 22 of which one end of each is fixed to the balance while the other ends are pivotally connected to a pair of connecting rods 23, 23 in turn are attached to the pivoting balance 5 to which the grinding wheel is mounted. connected with pivots to the lateral supports 6, 6, which, from the frame of the machine carry the pendulum with pivots. The action of these springs 22, 22 and of these connecting rods 23, 23 is to reduce the effect of the weight of the grinding wheel 7 and to assist in the return of the grinding wheel to its central position when the grinding wheel is off-center. in any direction and thereby maintain uniform grinding of the crank journal 16 or the like being ground during the reciprocating motion of the grinding wheel, in accordance with the stroke of the crank journal or the like.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The support 2 can be mounted on wheels 24, to be able to move along the frame 1 so that the grinding wheel can move transversely on the workpiece or else be aligned with each crank journal in turn. The transverse movement is controlled by turning the handwheel 25 mounted on a shaft 26 in the support, said shaft being provided with pinions meshing with the teeth of a rack or other similar arrangement fixed to the frame 1. .
The above transverse movement can be dispensed with and the relative axial movement between the grinding wheel 7 and the crank journal 3 can be effected only with the aid of the sliding point on the bed 4 of the machine.
The crankshaft is actuated around its axis by any suitable means, for example by the pulley 28 which rotates the mandrel 29. The driving wheel 8 may be provided with a tire. elastic 30.
