"Improvements to flexible couplings for shafts or the like."
The invention relates to flexible couplings for shafts or the like, of the kind to which it is necessary to have recourse for the construction of machines in which the ends of two coaxial shafts must be made integral with one another. rotation and must support each other in the radial direction, the coupling having to allow slight misalignments such as inevitably occurs, if not during construction and assembly, at least during operation of the gear. One of the aims of the invention is to establish a coupling of this type which is capable of withstanding both tensile forces and torsional forces.
A coupling exhibiting this characteristic can be applied, for example, to turbo-propellants where the shaft of a compressor exerting a thrust in a certain direction must be coupled coaxially with the shaft of a turbine developing a thrust. opposite; this particular application is, indeed, that which the invention aims more immediately.
In such an assembly, where three or more bearings can be provided to support the entire line of shafts, it is almost inevitable that some misalignment between the shafts will occur, and even if such misalignment occurs. does not occur during construction and assembly, or if this can be taken into account in the construction of the bearings themselves, it almost certainly does occur during operation. A coupling established in accordance with the invention is particularly applicable to trees of which at least the adjacent ends are hollow and it requires in any case that the elements within the line of trees are accessible.
According to the invention; there is provided a flexible coupling for amber or the like intended to withstand a tension load, comprising, on the one hand, at the ends of the shafts to be coupled, radial torque transmitting elements spaced apart axially and joined together by their outer edges and, on the other hand, an axial tensioning element arranged coaxially
