<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
En pratique, lorsqu'une commande est appliquée par une chaîne ou une courroie à l'organe mené, l'anneau à dents rapportées, étant libre et flottant, est placé dans la position désirée par le fait que la longueur de le chaîne ou de la courroie est réglée jusqu'à ce que le brin de commande et le brin de retour de celle-ci soient tendus;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La mise en position angulaire fixe de l'anneau à dents rapportées en prise avec l'organe mené sous la forme d'ùne roue fixe à dents rapportées montée ,sur le moyeu d'une roue de bicyclette ordinaire réduit le'frottement à un mini- . mum lors de l'usage d'un rapport élevé de transmission quand cette forme de commande fonctionne sous des charges excessives à des vitesses variables, et la mise en position fixe angulaire de l'anneau-de transmission en contact avec un rouleau libre, comme cela sera spécifié, empêche tout jeu inutile des pédales lors du freinage en cas de nécess-ité urgente comme dans l'application à la course sur piste ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The Company known as: Northern Patent Developments Limited and
Mr. Benson George Willis, Bartletti both of Darlington, County, Durham- (England) Means of transmitting motive power by belt or chain, enclosing a floating toothed annular gear. International Convention: British Patent Application No. IS.069 filed August 12, 1943.
The present invention relates to motive force transmission means, particularly means enclosing a toothed driven pinion gear, meshing with an internal toothed toothed gear of a floating gear ring, the outer part of this ring being connected by means of a chain or belt to the driving member.
In motive power transmission means of the type described, it is desirable, in order to increase the efficiency of the gears for variable loads and variable speeds, that the point of contact of the driven pinion and the inner gear ring, , when transmitting a command, either
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
disposed on the side of a line passing through the axes of the driving member and of the driven member where the control is applied to the driven member, and on. has found by testing that for the best fit, this point of contact should be placed such that a line passing through it and through the axis of the driven member makes an angle of about 150 with the line passing through them. axes of the driving organ and of the driven organ.
In practice, when a command is applied by a chain or a belt to the driven member, the ring with attached teeth, being free and floating, is placed in the desired position by the fact that the length of the chain or of the belt is adjusted until the control side and the return side of the latter are tight;
the purpose of this change is to provide a means by which this ring position is maintained when a command is not transmitted. When a transmission means of the type described has been employed in racing and for other applications, particularly when employing small diameter rear hub wheels, the defect has been observed that the desired position of the '@nnecu of gearing, obtained when a command is transmitted, is lost during braking or when other ceases,
had to transmit a command and that when the braking is effected by applying reverse pressure to the pedals, there was play in the pedals.
A motive force transmission means of the type described in accordance with the present invention comprising a chain or belt engaged with the outer part of the floating ring, said chain or belt being adjusted and tensioned so that the ring is placed in the desired position when issuing a command,
is characterized in that a roller rotatably mounted on a fixed axis is located inside the ring and is intended to make contact by rolling with a track formed internally on the gear ring in view to retain this ring substantially in the desired position when a command is not transmitted or when braking is effected by reverse pressure applied to the driving organ, and in such a manner that the gear ring is moved by the chain or drive belt
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
out of contact with the roller when a command is transmitted.
The device comprises a means by which a fixed angular position of the floating ring in engagement with the driven wheel provides. Advantageous results of economy of force, of the means by which in the control position the adjustment of the tensioned chain prevents the gear ring from loosening beyond a certain angular position and in same time when a fixed rear wheel is used, a. means preventing the floating ring from tilting upwards on the cooperating tooth of the rear fixed wheel, 'in the strand acting towards the front of the chain or belt during the act of producing a braking by the pedal on the road following the usual practice of track racing.
The fixed angular position of the toothed ring engaged with the driven member in the form of a fixed toothed wheel mounted on the hub of an ordinary bicycle wheel reduces the friction to a minimum. -. mum when using a high transmission ratio when this form of control operates under excessive loads at varying speeds, and the angularly fixed position of the transmission ring in contact with a free roller, as this will be specified, prevents any unnecessary play of the pedals when braking in case of urgent necessity as in the application to track racing;
It should also be noted that this setting in angular position of the floating ring with attached teeth with the coacting teeth of the driven wheel, as has been specified and as shown in the drawing, does not limit the advantageous use of the invention has fixed hub wheels for racing and that the control and the specified angular position of the transmission can be applied with advantage to tourist machines provided with a freewheel, as required.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig, 1 is an elevational view of one form of the driving force transmission means according to the invention applied to the chain drive of a bicycle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Fig. 2 is an elevational view showing an enclosure pe enclosing the device according to FIG. 1.
It is the driving chain wheel, 12 the driven fixed toothed pinion, with reported teeth, mounted in the rear hub on the axis 13 of the bicycle. A ring 14 ′ is provided with an internal toothing 15 which is with attached teeth and is intended to come in prized with the teeth of the pinion 12 and it is provided with an outer chain wheel 16 intended to come in -orise with a chain 17 by which a control is transferred to the ring 14 and thence to the pinion 12 driven by the driving chain wheel 11. A bracket 18 is mounted on the axle 15 and by means of a clamp 19 on the bar 20 of the frame of the bicycle.
An adjustable idle roller 21 can rotate on the console 18, preferably on an axis 22 disposed in a slot 2 of the console, nuts 24 being provided on the axis 33 to wedge the roller in a suitable position on the console. . The roller 21 is particularly intended to come into contact with the teeth 35 of the internal teeth 15 when the mechanism is in the rest position, so that the correct adjustment of the chain and the angular contact imposed between the ring and the component driven during power transmission and during braking action / in case of urgent need, while racing or otherwise.
When the transmission is assembled or adjusted with a loose chain, idler roller 21 is allowed to assume a position in bracket 18 which allows floating ring 14 to swing upward to allow chain to remain loose. The roller 21 is then moved backwards, that is to say away from the driving wheel 11, until, by meeting the teeth 35 of the ring 14 and thus pressing this ring and moving it down and back, the control and return strands 25 and 26 respectively of the chain or of the belt 17 are tensioned.
The length of the chain or belt 17 is such that when the chain is adjusted, the contact point
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
37-between the internal teeth 15 and the driven pinion 12 is above a line passing through the pinion axis 13, and the axis 28 -of the driving member 11 and the line 27-15 is an angle of about 1300 with the 13-28 line. When a command is transmitted, the 'ring' 14 is. moved slightly downwards and out of contact with the roller 21 which remains stationary ,.
When reverse voltage is applied to the chain to produce brake action by the pedals only when a fixed wheel is employed for the. racing and other applications; the tendency of the ring to rock upwards causes the teeth of ring 14 to lift up hard upon contact with roller 21, the roller thus helping to retard movement during the braking action -and at the same time limiting the upward floating movement of the floating ring by retaining it in its desired position in order to eliminate the play on the pedals during braking in speed by a reverse movement, of the foot only as one the fact in the normal practice of the race.
The device can be enclosed entirely in an envelope 34, as seen in FIG. 2. @
It can be seen that this form of control can be applied advantageously to the propulsion of chain-actuated mechanisms of all kinds, and particularly to patient chairs and chain-actuated lawn mowers, and also to track devices. used in military tanks, and all well-known forms of crawler control where endless tracks are employed,
the toothed floating ring as specified eliminating all sharp angles of the chain links to save motive force when transmitting a command under varying loads and at varying speeds.
The surface of the freely mounted roller, engaging the teeth of the floating ring may be made of a non-metallic substance so as to spare the life of the gear teeth if required. ., saire.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The present invention is not limited to teeth of the type shown on the floating ring with attached teeth and on the attached attached toothed wheel forming the driven member; Straight teeth reported. Like teeth can be formed on the ring and on the driven member and the cooperating teeth can be of any known or other shape, metallic or non-metallic as desired.
The invention is not limited to a chain drive as specified and the toothed floating ring can carry an outer pulley surface of any formation. appropriate. It can be seen that with this type of transmission, the feed strand and the return strand of the belt or chain are automatically placed under tension during the transmission of motive force.
The invention is not limited to. the standard form of freewheels and the inner teeth of the ring and driven member could have a composite formation, each of which has a central channel which houses an attached tooth for the purpose of promoting the rolling action -ment of the gears in engagement.
Insert teeth may be press-fitted in the gear ring and be fixed by screws or rivets or the like, or they may: be press-fitted and have a circumferential groove cut so that a raised circumferential portion of the ring may be pressed into this groove and thereby secure the teeth in position, or the teeth may be secured to the ring by spot welding, or some other manufacturing process.
The mating teeth of the driven member, having the shape of a free or fixed rear wheel, can be press-fastened thereon or riveted or welded or partly screwed into the rear hub by means of a pitch. screw on the left, retort in the usual practice of the manufacture of slugs when fixed wheels are employed.
