<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Suivant l'une des caractéristiques de l'invention, les objets à traiter sont portés à des températures de trai- tement thermique préalable à la métallisation, dans un mélange gazeux dont les composants, strictement contrôlés sont : l'hydrogène, la vapeur d'eau et l'azote;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
EMI5.1
Q = (T - t) X 0 X 1 X e X V X d dans laquelle
Or de t,els écarts se traduisent dans un four con- tinu par des écarts très importants de température Pour main- tenir la température d'immersion t strictement constante. la vitesse V est rendue automatiquement variable et inversement proportionnelle à la section de la bande . à cet effet, on a prévu un dispositif automatique qui comporte t un appareil de réglage de température automa- tique 17, avec son élément sensible 18 placé à l'endroit de l'immersion;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Le dispositif de palpage périodique 25 du servo-controller 19 agit à des intervalles réglables sur le palpeur 26 qui complè- te à son tour périodiquement et pendant un intervalle de temps réglable la fermeture soit du circuit commandant l'enclenche- ment du contacteur 20, soit du circuit du contacteur 21 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
15, mais aussi dans la zone du four comportant les éléments 14 il est aspiré - en vue de sa récupération et de son renvoi en 32 après avoir été purifié par des procédés connus - par le conduit 34 placé dans la même zone où la bande est soumise à la température de recristallisation ou de recuit, de telle sor te que la bande 1 se trouvant pendant un certain temps main- tenue à cette dernière température;
Le mélange gazeux constituant l'atmosphère de la zone de chauffage du four 4 ne peut donc pas affecter la com- position du mélange gazeux circulant suivant les flèches 33, car la quantité de gaz admis par 29 et 30 et susceptible d'ar- riverr diffusion jusqu'au tube 34 est pratiquement négli- geable ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
Dans le cas où la vitesse de déplacement de la bande est lente, le bain suivant le procédé connu dit "au plomb peut être utilisé pour diminuer le temps d'immersion de la ban- de dans l'aluminium en fusion :C'est ce que montre la modifi- cation de la figure 3, suivant laquelle le bain d'aluminium en fusion 16 est contenu dans une cuve sans fond 36, plongée dans le bain de plomb 37;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
taire qui consiste à porter la surface de la dite bande se dé- plaçant dans un plan vertical, à une température dépassant nettement le point de fusion du revêtement daluminium, de fa- çon que ce dernier perde son brillant et acquière une surface mate, colorée et lisse ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
Il est certain que l'on peut traiter dans les mêmes conditions des objets métalliques sous la forme de fils conti= nus; de tôles séparées, ou d'objets isolés de forme quelconque;

French patent application in his favor of February 18, 1942.
The present invention relates to improvements made to methods and apparatus for the hot metallization of metallic objects, and more particularly for the manufacture of steel objects coated with pure aluminum or alloys. aluminum
The object and effect of this invention is to obtain metallic objects which, having undergone a homogeneous heat treatment, possess a continuous adherent metallic protective coating, uniform and free of all foreign bodies, said coating being characterized. by the presence of a thin intermediate layer consisting only of compounds of the base metal with the coating metal.
It also aims at the production of devices making it possible to obtain these objects industrially in a much more extensive, efficient and economical way than by means of the currently known devices "Improvements to processes and devices for the coating of metal articles with protective layers of a different metal "
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The most advantageous metallization processes are those said to be hot, which consist in immersing the objects to be coated, previously annealed and pickled, in a bath of molten protective metal.
It has also been proposed, in order to eliminate the pickling, to carry out the heat treatment, prior to the metallization, in a reducing atmosphere. However, the products produced up to now have serious defects as a result. the discontinuity or irregularity of the layer of compounds and as a result of the presence in the product of particles of salts, hydrogen and other harmful foreign substances; in particular, no process has hitherto been able to be implemented for the industrial hot production of an aluminum coating.
According to one of the characteristics of the invention, the objects to be treated are brought to heat treatment temperatures prior to metallization, in a gaseous mixture, the components of which, strictly controlled, are: hydrogen, steam. water and nitrogen;
another gaseous mixture, composed only of nitrogen and a small amount of hydrogen. is used as a medium in which the treated objects are maintained at the treatment temperature and are cooled before their immersion in the molten coating metal. This procedure, alone, gives the possibility of freeing the objects to be treated of minimal traces of oxides or non-metallic impurities, while practically avoiding the harmful absorption of hydrogen by the base metal, which is the first condition, especially when it comes to producing then an aluminum coating, for the formation of an adherent, continuous, uniform layer,
of compounds of the base metal with the coating metal
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Another characteristic of the invention consists in ae that the objects having undergone the previous treatment are immersed in the molten coating metal after having been cooled to a temperature having strictly the same value as that of the molten metal, these two temperatures being only slightly above the melting point of said met al.
Another characteristic of the invention; concerning the particular case of manufacturing the coating in pure aluminum or in aluminum alloys on ferrous objects, consists in allowing the objects coming out of the coating bath to cool down to a temperature of 400 -200 C. - gradually and for a minimum of two to five minutes, in order to obtain a continuous and flexible coating
In addition, the invention will be fully understood with the aid of the description which follows and of the appended drawing in which an applied embodiment has been shown.
for example, to the coating with aluminum of a mild steel strip, it being understood, moreover, that this invention remains applicable to the manufacture of objects of any shape, in any metal, and coated with any metal or its alloys.
In this drawing: FIG. 1 is a schematic view in longitudinal section of a device according to the invention; FIG. 2 represents, on a larger scale, the inlet end of the device of FIG. 1; FIG. 3 shows a modification of one of the constituent elements of the device of FIG. 1.
As seen in Figure 1, the milking belt 1 moves in the direction of arrow 2, and enters through the sealing boot 3 into the oven 4 made gas-tight and filled with a gas mixture . The role played by such a sealing box for the effectiveness of the treatment in a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
gas mixture, as well as the essential conditions to which it must meet, were exposed in French patent N 856,593 of June 17, 1939 "Furnace for heat treatment or other applications".
Said boot 3 comprises a metal muffle 5 gas-tight, provided with several pairs of slits 6 of approximately one millimeter in width arranged at the top and bottom over the entire width of the mitten 5; linings 7 in unraveled metal sheets five to fifteen hundredths of a millimeter thick passing through the slots 6 over their entire length,
are inclined 45 so that each liner passing through the top wall touches the corresponding liner passing through the bottom wall, thus forming an angle of 90, the apex of which is directed in the direction of travel of the strip The parts of the linings 7 located on the outside of the muffle are clamped against the support plates 8 by means of bars 9 and 10 and clamping screws 11; these screws 11 being blocked, the pressure exerted by the intermediary of the clamping bars 10 and 9 on the gaskets and the seals 12 renders the assembly tight to the external atmosphere on the one hand, and on the other hand, keeps the trim in place.
The furnace has two groups of heating elements 13 and 14, of any type already used in special atmosphere furnaces and individually controlled by automatic temperature control devices. The group 13, located from the furnace o8té, has sufficient power to heat the strip to the heat treatment temperature; the second group 14, much less powerful, is used to maintain the strip at the temperature of said treatment.
On leaving oven 4, the strip cools down in
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the cooler 15 (remaining outside the invention), which forms with the furnace a gas-tight assembly, so as to have, at the time of its immersion in the bath 16 of molten aluminum, strictly the same temperature as this bath: To obtain this result, the number 0 of the calories dissipated in this cooler must be kept constant, this number being represented by the formula:
EMI5.1
Q = (T - t) X 0 X 1 X e X V X d in which
T is the annealing temperature (Constant) t, the immersion temperature (Constant) c, the specific heat of the steel (Constant) d, the specific gravity of the steel. (Constant).
V, the speed of movement of the strip, l, the width of the strip which can be accepted in practice as constant, e, the thickness of the strip which in practice varies constantly at least 5% and often more
However, in a continuous furnace, these differences result in very large temperature differences in order to keep the immersion temperature t strictly constant. the speed V is made automatically variable and inversely proportional to the section of the strip. for this purpose, an automatic device has been provided which comprises t an automatic temperature control device 17, with its sensitive element 18 placed at the place of immersion;
a servocontroller motor 19 with two bipolar electromagnetic contactors 20 and 21, a servo motor 22 and a variable speed drive motor 25 of any type. The smallest deviations in the immersion temperature t resulting from accidental variations in the thickness e of the strip are immediately recorded by the temperature control apparatus 17; the inverter 24 of which this device is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
muni immediately energizes either the circuit controlling the engagement of contactor 20 for example, in the event that the temperature t is exceeded, or that of contact 21 in the event that the temperature t drops below normal saving.
The periodic probing device 25 of the servo-controller 19 acts at adjustable intervals on the probe 26 which in turn periodically completes and during an adjustable time interval the closing either of the circuit controlling the engagement of the contactor 20, either of the contactor 21 circuit;
the triggering of one of the two contactors which results from it - Causes the temporary closing of the circuits controlling the movement of the servomotor 22, which causes the latter to turn for a certain time either in one direction , or in another,
These periodic movements of the servo motor 22, which is coupled with the speed variation control shaft 27 of the motor 23, cause the rotational speed of the drive rollers 28 which are coupled with the motor 23 to vary in a desired direction. , in the event that the immersion temperature t begins to drop as a result of a decrease in the thickness of the strip, the rotational speed of the drive rollers and consequently the linear speed V of displacement of the strip increase, and vice versa versa.
Hydrogen or a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen with a high hydrogen content -75% hydrogen and 25% nitrogen as an example- is introduced through tube 29 into furnace 4. more especially in the heating zone of the elements 13 where the strip 1 is brought to the heat treatment temperature, and a strictly metered quantity of water vapor intended to complete this mixture is added thereto at 30; this mixture cir cule according to arrow 31 in the opposite direction to the direction of displacement of the band for, finally. escape to the atmosphere through the narrow passages presented by the fittings 7 of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
waterproof boot 3.
The strip is then surrounded until it is immersed in the bath of molten metal by a second gas mixture free from water vapor, and composed mainly of nitrogen and a small amount of hydrogen -95% d nitrogen and 5% hydrogen by way of example. This mixture is introduced at 32 and circulates along the arrows 33, in the direction opposite to the direction of movement of the strip, not only in the cooling.
15, but also in the zone of the furnace comprising the elements 14 it is sucked - with a view to its recovery and its return to 32 after having been purified by known methods - by the duct 34 placed in the same zone where the strip is subjected to the recrystallization or annealing temperature, such that the strip 1 is for a certain time maintained at this latter temperature;
, has time to release the hydrogen which it was able to absorb during the previous treatments. this release of hydrogen being favored by the high temperature and the low partial pressure of the hydrogen in the gas mixture,
We can see that the paths of the two gas mixtures are absolutely distinct
The gas mixture constituting the atmosphere of the heating zone of the furnace 4 cannot therefore affect the composition of the gas mixture circulating according to the arrows 33, because the quantity of gas admitted by 29 and 30 and liable to arrive diffusion up to tube 34 is practically negligible;
this makes possible the perfect purification of the mixture recovered at 34 and returned to 32. * On the other hand, the first gas mixture can be easily adjusted so as to contain a high percentage of hydrogen and water vapor, which allows the effective reduction of iron oxides on the surface of the gas. steel strip being processed,
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
produce a surface decarburization of the steel and, consequently, obtain a surface free from all its impurities.
The steel strip, treated as just explained, is immersed for a short time in the aluminum bath 16, kept molten in a furnace 35 which may be of any type provided, however, that 'it makes it possible to maintain the bath temperature automatically and with great precision at a strictly determined value. born, should only slightly exceed the soli temperature. dification of aluminum.
In the case where the speed of movement of the strip is slow, the bath according to the known process known as "with lead can be used to reduce the time of immersion of the strip in the molten aluminum: It is this. as shown by the modification of FIG. 3, according to which the bath of molten aluminum 16 is contained in a bottomless vessel 36, immersed in the bath of lead 37;
lead having no affinity for iron, the submerged strip passes through the lead bath without the latter affecting its surface in any way, and then passes through the aluminum bath 16 while not remaining in contact with the latter that during a time which can be very short
The strip coated with aluminum leaves the bath either by a wiping device, not shown. either freely The surface of the bath can be protected against oxidation at the strip outlet, as seen in FIG. 3, by a gas or a protective gas mixture which is fed through the tube 38 into a box formed by the bottomless tank 36 and its cover 39, which has a slot 40 for the passage of the strip.
In the embodiment of Figure 3, the aluminum strip undergoes on leaving the bath an additional treatment.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
which consists in bringing the surface of the said strip moving in a vertical plane, to a temperature clearly exceeding the melting point of the aluminum coating, so that the latter loses its shine and acquires a matt, colored surface and smooth;
heating elements 41 ,, which may be of any type, are provided for this purpose. This reheating treatment is carried out either in atmospheric air or in the presence of a special atmosphere
It has been found that it is possible to manufacture a matt coating, which in certain environments constitutes a particularly effective protection against corrosion, that on a single surface of aluminum objects or even on only a part of selected surfaces, the surfaces not reheated retaining the characteristic shine of aluminum.
The strip is then cooled by passing through the heat-insulated mittens 42, the number and length of which are provided so as to achieve this cooling very gradually to a temperature between 400 and 200 Ci for a minimum time of two minutes, this gradual cooling times can be extended for a thick band to five minutes, and even longer.
The mittens 42 are preferably arranged vertically, as shown in Figure 1, the strip being guided in the vertical position by the drums 43 which are also heat insulated by the fittings 44; ventilation openings 45 are arranged at the top and bottom of each muffle, and these openings are closed by adjustable registers 46, so as to adjust the cooling regime of the strip by circulating around it, more or less vigorously, atmospheric air, which is sucked in through the orifices at the bottom and is evacuated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
by the natural pulling of the openings at the top.
The progression of the strip through the apparatus is ensured under the conditions specified above, by the drive rollers 28. These rollers can be formed in certain cases by the working rolls of a rolling mill, which while ensuring the progression of the strip through the apparatus, at the same time gives it a light work hardening. sometimes desirable * when it is for example a product intended for the manufacture of canned bundles.
In this regard @ it is not without interest to point out that mild steel strips which have been industrially coated by the above-mentioned processes and means, with commercial aluminum (99.5% Al.). we were able to carry out all the folding, rolling, crimping and stamping operations required for this manufacture of cans or other packaging, without the aluminum coating having cracked or peeled off.
It is certain that metal objects in the form of continuous wires can be treated under the same conditions; separate sheets, or isolated objects of any shape;
which would be moved inside the device described above by means of any conveyor
CLAIMS 1 Hot metallization process according to which the objects brought to the pre-heat treatment temperature are subjected, before their immersion in a bath of molten coating metal, to cooling to a temperature having strictly the same. same value as that of the bath, the latter being maintained at a strictly constant temperature and slightly above the melting point of the coating metal.
