<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Le fonctionnement se comprend aisément à la simple inspection des dessins représentés aux fig.9,IO,II. En effet lors du retropé- dalage,sens de la flèche voir fig.IO,la came 43 fait osciller le levier 49 en 46 et provoque par le cliquet 51 la rotation de la roue à rochet 16 tout comme déjà expliqué antérieurement;

"" AUTOMATIC "DERAILLEUR FOR MEN'S, WOMEN'S, CHILDREN'S BICYCLES, TANDEMS AND OTHER VEHICLES MOVED BY MUSCLE STRENGTH OR OTHERS".
The object of this improvement patent to the main patent recalled above, as in the main patent, is the use of backpedaling to automatically activate, by means of appropriate control devices, the derailleur mechanism acting on the chain. driving the various pinions of the rear wheel of the bicycle or the like *
Backpedaling can, as in the main patent, cause a pawl or cleat disposed on the toothed wheel or large pinion of the crankset to act, but also activate a pawl or equivalent means which can be placed either on the crank arm. right or left, either on the axle of the gear inside the latter, or outside the gear on the left or right end of this axis.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Thus, in the improvement patent, certain embodiments of devices capable of controlling the actual mechanism of the derailleur described in the main patent will be described as exemplary embodiments, in addition a new embodiment of the frame supporting the frame will be described. derailer mechanism.
It should be noted that with the use of back-pedaling to activate the ratchet attacking the derailleur mechanism, a control by linkage or by cable can be replaced by hand from a suitable place of the bi- oyclette or the like, for example of the handlebars or of the frame.
In order to bring out the above description more clearly, the appended drawings represent, by way of explanation and not by way of limitation, some of the embodiments envisaged above, namely:

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Referring to fig.I to 5, 1 shows the gear of a bicycle which will be considered as an example freewheel and provided with a pinion 39 at three speeds. 2 and 3 represent the tubes of the rear fork. The crankset wheel is shown by 4,1 the gear axle by 7 and the right and left crank arms respectively by 5 and 6. The chain is represented at 24. The pawl or cleat 30 disposed on the wheel 4 of the crankset is intended, as in the main patent, to drive a ratchet wheel 16 mounted on an axle 14 which can rotate in a socket 9 of the frame 8 on which it is held by the nut 15.
The frame 8 is fixed and clamped on the frame by the bolt 12 passing through the support cross member 31. The ratchet wheel 16 is provided laterally in 17 with notches or teeth 17 in which the end of a pusher 25 acts. housed in the frame 8 and biased by a return spring 2b fixed by a screw 28 engaged in the sleeve 9. The purpose of this pusher 25 is to maintain the ratchet wheel 16 in the position given to it by the pawl 30 , and thus ensure the maintenance of the given speed until a new displacement of the wheel 16.
The same wheel 16 is provided at its periphery with a toothing 18 thus forming the ratchet wheel intended to be driven in a single direction of rotation by the cleat or pawl 30: during the back-pedaling movement. This wheel 16 carries. te on its outer side face a crank button 19 engaged in a slide 20 forming ---- one of the ends of a lever 21 which can oscillate or pivot at 22 on the tube 3, the other end of which 29, fork-shaped, embraces the chain 24 along its upper strand which,
when back-pedaling becomes floating and can thus easily occupy the position given to it by the fork 29. The lever 21 is held between two guides 11 fixed at 13 at the end of an arm 10 in one piece with the bati 8 or referred to the latter. Thus, a single bolt 12 is used to fix the entire derailleur mechanism.
The operation can be understood by the following.
When back-pedaling, the pawl 30 attacks the top of one of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
teeth 18 of wheel 16 and rotated it through a certain angle at the same time as the crank knob 19 of wheel 16, which has the effect of moving the slide 20 and thus pivoting the lever 21, this which causes the fork 29 of the lever - 21 to laterally move the chain 24 by a value corresponding to. the distance between the teeth of two adjacent pinions forming the three-speed equipment 39, discussed above. This given position is maintained as indicated above, by the pusher 25 immobilizing the wheel 16.
In FIGS. 6, 7 and 8, another device for controlling the derailleur mechanism has been shown and consequently the latter comprises a constructive variant which will be described below.
In this embodiment, on the axis 7 of the gear 1 is fixed by a half-collar (see fig. 6), a lever 32 carrying at its end the articulation 34 of a pawl 33 provided with a return spring 56. This pawl 33 is intended to engage the teeth 18 of a ratchet wheel 16 engaged by its shaft 60 in the upper part of a frame 35 fixed to the frame of the bicycle by a bolt 12 and cross member 31. end of the shaft 34 is fixed a c8nic pinion 36 whose teeth 38 mesh with the corresponding teeth 40 of another pinion 39 engaged in the bush 42 integral with the frame 35. This pinion 39 carries a crank knob 41 engaging in the slide 20 of the lever 21.
The pusher 25 immobilizing the selected speed is also housed in the frame 35 and acts on the teeth 37 formed on the face opposite that of the teeth 38 of the bevel pinion 36. The other construction details are the same as above.
The operation is easily understood, given the above.
In fact, by the back-pedaling movement, the lever arm 32 rotates so as to drive the wheel 16 in angular displacement and from there causes the movement of the slide 20.
The fig.9,10,11 relate to yet another control device of the derailleur mechanism.
The control is effected by a cam 43 attached or coming from one piece, with the axis 7. The beak of the cam 43 attacks during the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
back-pedaling see fig.IO the end of a pawl 44 engaged in a slot 58 of the gear 1 and articulated at 45 to a lever 49 and biased by a return spring 57 fixed on this lever 49, which is itself articulated in 46 on a fixed pivot consisting of a screw 47 engaged on a clamp 48 embracing the tube 2.
At the other end of the lever 49 is articulated at 50 a pawl 51 with a return spring, not shown, intended to drive the wheel 16, see fig.IO, by its toothing 17. This wheel 16 is as in FIG. 3 engaged by its axis 14 in a socket or frame 59 integral with the fixing collar 56 to the fork tube 2. A nut 15 retains the axis 14 as in fig.3. The wheel 16 as in FIG. 3 carries a crank button 19 engaged in the slide 20 of the lever 21.
The immobilization of the wheel 16 after a back-pedaling maneuver is obtained by engaging in the notches or teeth 18 distributed over the periphery of the wheel 16, a pusher 52 provided with a return spring, not shown, and articulated at 53 to a clamp 54, the branches of which are joined together and clamped on the fork tube 2 by the screw or bolt 55. The other members with reference numbers are the same as before.
The operation is easily understood by a simple inspection of the drawings shown in fig.9, IO, II. In fact, during backshifting, in the direction of the arrow see fig.IO, the cam 43 causes the lever 49 to oscillate at 46 and causes the pawl 51 to rotate the ratchet wheel 16 as already explained previously;
From the above description, it can be seen that the object of the invention can lend itself to numerous embodiments of the control means of the derailleur mechanism and of the mechanism itself.
In addition, the number of control means mounted on the various members subjected to back-pedaling may be greater than unity so as to obtain, by one revolution of the crankset, two or more than two speed changes. All of these considerations depend on the number of gears, the destination of the bicycle or anything else.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
be technical or commercial consideration.
It goes without saying that whatever control device it may be like already. signaled to be put into action not by the back-pedaling, -only, but with the help of Ci 'un, 8 any command, 1 under these conditions it would no longer be automatic. @@@@@@

In cessas, the fork 29 of the lever 21 will act on the lower end of the chain, that is to say on the mixed end.
We can also give the cleat or pawl or any other equivalent means meeting the enviBaged goal (control of the derailleur mechanism) any suitable embodiment without having to be limited to the representations shown by way of example.
Likewise, the ratchet wheel of the mechanism may have a number of teeth greater or less than four, this number four having been chosen in the typical example, for a three-speed change. We can have two speeds or a number greater than three and consequently the ratchet wheel will be shaped accordingly.
