<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Polygonal container made of paper, cardboard or the like as well as the method and mechanism for its manufacture.
The invention relates to a container of polygonal, preferably quadrangular, section made of paper, cardboard or similar material, with \ .It bottom and / or a cover inserted into the body of the container, bottom or cover whose edges are s. 'extend outward from the surface of the bottom or cover and rest against the inner edge of the container body itself. The invention further relates to a method and a mechanism for the manufacture of such containers.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Paper containers of round section and methods and mechanisms for making them are known, the container of which the edges located above the surface of the cover are narrowed. Containers of this kind are made, among other things, by a process which observes that a dry base is pushed into the body of the still wet wound container. After the body dries, it shrinks; as the bottom star is opposed to the narrowing, the body narrows a little above the bottom face. This produces a small bulge on the outside of the body which tapers downward into a conical shape.
Disregarding the fact that such a precedent presents great difficulties for crimping the bottom in a polygonal paper container and that it involves making the body by winding, these known containers also have the disadvantage that on the outer face of the body there is a protruding bulge. For this reason, it is impossible to place, for example, one next to the other, quadrangular receptacles at the bottom inserted in this way, without there being intervallea filled with air between them. different paper containers.
When using the containers as packaging for frozen preserves produced according to the so-called contac process, such intervals must be avoided which allow no leaving. air.
In addition, in quadrangular or polygonal receptacles a difficulty arises which is of no importance for round receptacles and which consists in making the angles watertight. The known method for making a rim on the receptacles
EMI2.1
round, a process which consists in producing circular constrictions or dei gorgea, is not practicable for polygonal vessels precisely because of the angles. The operation by the-
EMI2.2
which one produces the rim causes a stretching of the fibers, which law can admit in the containers with round section; yeah, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
polygonal receptacles, it would result at the angles of inadmissible forces of the material.
An elongation of the material would occur at the angles which could cause tearing of the latter. In polygonal containers, pressure hemming of the edge of the body at the corners of the container is practically impossible without incisions. The realization of the sealing of the angles, that is to say in the interior angles of the body, constitutes a particular problem which arises only for polygonal containers and which cannot be solved by the aforementioned hemming methods.
According to the invention, the polygonal container is characterized by an accumulation of material in the area of the bottom and / or of the lid, at the angles near the edge of the container.
To produce this accumulation of matter, we can proceed in different ways. The blank cut to close the bottom or the lid may be provided with additional material, at the places intended to later form the corners of the bottom or of the lid, in order to ensure an accumulation of material in the corners during the formation of the bottom or of the cover.
The accumulation of material can also be obtained by the narrowing of the body of the container with the bottom or cover inserted, or else by the combination of the two aforementioned methods, that is to say by the narrowing of the body of the container with a bottom or cover consisting of a cut blank provided with additional material,
According to the invention, the polygonal container is characterized in that the edge of the container body is narrowed, together with the edges of the bottom or of the lid which rest against it, with respect to the prismatic smooth part of the container. The fact that the edges of the body or the junction places are reduced to a smaller extent of the perimeter makes it possible to obtain a good sealing at the corners.
It allows to have an excess of material to reinforce the places of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
junction; at the same time, the material is expiated at very high pressures * @e displacement of the edge of the casing inwards, at the same time as that of the contiguous parts of the cover or the bottom, produce a backflow, this is is to say a bringing together of the material to be shaped. This avoids subjecting the fibers to excessive stresses due to stretching. Methods are known for inserting the rectangular bases or lids into a container body.
For this purpose, one is satisfied to apply or to press the lids or lea funds, in original size, against the walls of the body of the container without repression or bringing together of the material. A watertight seal, in particular at the corners, can only be obtained with difficulty by such a process.
By fixing a bottom or a cover in the body of the paper container according to the invention, strong pressures can act on the parts to be connected to each other without the remaining part of the container or the contents of the container being exposed to any strain. This therefore results in a very tight and solid connection of the bottom or of the cover to the body, without these parts having to be made of a resistant material.
For the production of polygonal containers, the procedure is preferably carried out in such a way that after the introduction of the cover or the base, with the raised edges, into the end of the body of the container, the edge of the body is pressed together with the edges of the lid or the bottom which are applied against its inner face, and is thus brought to a section smaller than the original section, by pressure forces acting transversely with respect to the axis of the container.
According to the invention, the containers are made so that a prismatic container body is made first and that after the introduction, either from the bottom,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
roof of the cover, either of the two, the edges of the body located at the bottom below the bottom face / or above the top face of the cover are pressed inwards and reduced to a smaller section of the recent.
Preferably, the edge of the body which is hole in the vicinity of the inserted bottom or cover is pressed inwardly, so that the face of the inserted cover or bottom bulges inwardly. Therefore, the surface of the lid or the bottom can act as an expandable membrane, this property also being appreciated, for example for the use of the container for storing the quick-freezing goods.
The container according to the invention further has the advantage that the neck can be attached to the container in a more simple and secure manner after the latter has been filled with product. The known polygonal containers, with the fonda or lids firmly inserted, require special small openings for the introduction of the product, which openings must then be closed, on the other hand by special lids. Such containers have the drawback that filling with the product can only be done slowly because of the smaller dimensions of the opening; in addition, such a type of container closure is expensive.
In addition, the container according to the invention is distinguished by the possibility of rational and easy manufacture. The container body can be made first, in the form of a flattened pipe, on the machines used for gluing the folding boxes, machines which have an extremely high production capacity. The cover or the base is made from a flat blank with grooves, punched out from the material, an operation which can also be carried out quickly. The blank consists of a central part and four side legs formed by one or two branches. The blank is given the shape of a box and is introduced into the body of the container.
This insertion can be done, as needed, on fully automatic machines or on small devices operated by hand.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The blank should be given a shape such that

The use of such a decoded part for conforma-

tion and the insertion of the cover or the bottom in the e mpo of the container according to the invention, comprises the formation of acoumnlatiora of material, from that which and found between the different edges, at the angles between the surface of the cover or of the bottom and the edges.
Thanks to these material oaemulatiom a particularly satisfactory seal is obtained between the bottom or the cover and the corners of the body *
It is also within the spirit of the invention that, during the shaping of the cover or the bottom, accumulations of material then produced exceed the polygonal section determined by the raised edges. this has the effect, in-

different meters, as shown in fig. 2 to 6. The diffarantaa pieces of the column can be connected to each other, either by the use of a single kind of adhesive material as shown in Fig. 2, or by further narrowing termination by pressure, as shown in pins 3, 4, 6 and 6. The rim of the inaaraa closure piece can cover the bard of the body of the container 6Dir fig. 2 and 3) or apply only

on the interior wall of the body (see figs 4 and 5).
An additional ring 103, which is rubbed against the body 101, can be applied to increase the resistance force of the closure of the container.
The narrowing of the connection of the cover with the body can be carried out either above the bottom of the inserted cover (fig 3, 4, 6), or above .. or. from this bottom, as shown in fig. 6. In the latter case, the bottom of this bomb *
The container body 101 is made of a cannulated blank. We fold the blank and glue it coame as shown in * figs 7 and 8. The end caps are also made from a cut blank. Fig. 9 shows such a blank cut, namely for a U-folded end plug, of a rectangular paper container.
This blank has a central panel 108 and four outer flaps therefore each consists of an inner part 109 and an outer part 110. To form the final shutter, by means of this blank, they are first raised to the effect of form a container as shown in fig. 11. The rectangular end plug is then inserted into the body and the plug is joined to the body in a sealed manner by the use of an adhesive material and by the application of pressure. In order to further increase the tightness of the angles of the shutter, the cut blank is formed, from which the shutter is formed, so that accumulations of additional material 111 are provided between the interior parts 109.
These accumulations have rounded edges in fig. 9, while fig. 10 shows accumulations of material 111 with rectilinear edges.
After raising the edges, the accumulations of material take a shape 112, similar to that of a horn (fig.ll).
The body of the container 101 is formed by a cut blank which is glued along a longitudinal seal to constitute!
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
thus a flat sheath. To insert the end caps into the upright body, it * and recommendable to use thermoplastic glue or adhesive material. This glue or adhesive material can be applied either to the flap of the blank with the aid of which the end shutter is formed (see fig. 16), or to the edge of the container body (see fig. 13).
If the Body $ is provided with an end shutter folded in the shape of a U on the edge of the body, the seal between the shutter and the casing can be formed by the application of glue or adhesive material along the edges of the corpa, both on the inside and on the outside. In fig. 13, lines 113 represent some of the tandia interior glue strips that lines 114 represent the adhesive material applied to the exterior face of the body. The longitudinal joint of the body is designated by 115.
If the glue or adhesive material is to be applied to the blank of the end plug instead of to the blank of the container body, the rails of adhesive material are applied to the parts of the shutters as described above. a indicated on fig 16 by the references 116 and 117.
Generally, the blanks for the container body as well as the blanks for the end caps are produced by cutting a continuous strip or large sheet of raw material. It is general practice to provide the flâna with grooves or other indentations and, if necessary, also to cover them with an impression before the flâna are cut from the sheet or strip.
It is also often advantageous to apply the glue or thermoplastic adhesive material to the blank as well while the latter is still attached to the sheet or strip.
In this case, the adhesive material is applied in long parallel lines. Figs. 14 and 17 show a plan of the flâna cut out

To fonaer and insert the part used * nt to close the ends there is provided a fixed entoutiaaage channel 166 which constitutes a part of the feed table 149 (fig. 19 and 23). According to the invention, an elastic guide nozzle 167, intended

the punch 157 which is strongly clamped there. The plate 159, subjected to the pressure of a moaort, eqt intended to retain the shutter until the punch 157 is released from the shutter.
As shown in Figs. 23, 24, 25, as, the stamping channel 156 comprises side walls 160 to 163 intended to receive a blank of an end shutter of rectangular shape.
The side walls have the upper edges 164 and 165 rounded (see Figure 23). According to the invention, the upper ridges 164 of two opposite sides of the stamping channel 156 are disposed at a greater height than the upper ridges 165 of the other two sides. Therefore, during the formation of the end plug, the two tabs of the blank which rest on the higher edges 164 are raised, when the end plug is formed, before the two tabs which rest. on the lower edges 165, so that the cornet-shaped corners 112, shown in FIG. 11, are formed in an irreproachable way.

While the punch 157 continues to dISCl # -l, the preformed plug is pushed into the body 169, after which the lifter 170 descends again, driving the body 169 with the plug inserted.
This body 169 is then led to the second part B of the mechanism to complete the closure. Fig. 27 represents the bond

between the shutter and the body at the exit of the forming mechanism! and inserting the shutter.
Fig 21 shows the definitive closing mechanism B from the front. This mechanism is represented, seen from the side, on fig 22. On this mechanism B the folding of the shutter tabs, already inserted in the body, ends. pattea being will then bend in U around the borders of this corp; this mechanism also presses these folded tabs on one another and borders them with the body of the container. The mechanism essentially consists of two separate tools, namely the pressure head 200 and the lifting table 201.
The pressure head 200 included a central part 202 fixed to the main frame 203 by means of a support 204, cane shown in the pins 21 and 22.
At the lower end of the central part 202 is fixed the internal pressure member 205. A support 206 is also fixed to the internal end of the central part 202. On this support are arranged four levers 207 with two arms which rotate freely around the pivots 208. Rollers 209 are shown on one arm of the levers 207 so as to be able to rotate.
These rollers 209 operate in sliding parts 210 which move radially in tents provided in the support 206. The pressure members 211 are mounted on the sliding parts 210. The other arm of the two-arm levers 207 also carries a roller 212. This roller 212 moves on the curved face of the ramp 213. A spiral spring 214, placed around the pressure head 200, is housed in the ends. - notches provided for the four levers 207. This spiral spring 214 exerts on the levers 207 a traction directed inwardly so that the rollers 212 apply with a certain pressure against the curved face of the ramp 213 .
The ramp 213 is rigidly connected to a sliding ring 215. The sliding ring 215 itself is arranged by

so as to be able to mount and d88Cendl: -e, on the piece contra 9u.
When the sliding ring 215 has made a releasing movement, it drives the role 213 and, thanks to the curved face of this ramp M39, the gallota 212 of the lever Eo7 spread outwards. Therefore, the levers 207 rotate around the pivots 208, so that the arms of the levers 207, which carry the rollers 209, make an inward movement. Thanks to this movement @

the arm in front of the levers 20? is pushed inwards by the spiral spring 214, so that 108 cheerfulness 209 are displaced towards the end together with the preseion members 211.
Immediately below the pre4aton display, four bending tools (221 and 229) are mounted in color, A special device, not shown in the figures, printed at

these bending tools move back and forth in a horizontal plane. The operation of these folding tools 221 as well as that of the pressure members 205 and 211 will be described later in more detail.
The container 224 with the end plug already inserted is placed by hand on the table 201. As a result of the disengagement of the coupling which operates only for one revolution, the table 201 rises with the container 224. guidance

Fig. 28 shows the first stage of the folding operation. The end shutter 296 is inserted into the body 227 so that the legs 228 spend the body 227. The four folding members 221, only two of which are shown, are provided with plates folding 229 at their anterior ends.
These four pUage 229 plates are formed. so that when the organ. folding plates are in their outermost inward position, the tabs 228 of the end shutter 226 can be raised above the lower ends of the folding plates 229, as shown in FIG. 28.
Next, the folding members 221 move outward, whereby the inner ends of the folding plates 229 fold the tabs 228 at right angles to the edges of the casing 227. This position is shown in Fig. 29. folding members 221 complete their movement towards the outside and at the same time retain the legs 228 in their horizontal position. Then the container body is lifted with the end plug inserted. As a result, the protruding tab 228 is bent in a U-shape over the edge of the body 227 by the folding plates 229, as shown in FIG. 30.
The folding members 221,229, intended to fold the lids or the bottoms 228, are fixed immediately below the pressure members, so that they advantageously constitute an inlet hopper for the supply of the container to the pressure tools 205,211 . The container continues its upward movement until the folded legs of the end shutter come into contact with the internal pressure members. 205.
The outer pressure members 211 then move inward and
<Desc / Clms Page number 21>
present the tabs of the end shutter together and border them with body 227 (see fig. 31,38,33). The internal pressure tool 205 has a surface 230 which protrudes and which acts as a stop (Fig. 33). According to the invention, while the rims 228 and the body 227 are pressed together, the front ridges of the body 227, covered by the edges of the cover or the bottom, are applied by pressure members, acting transversely to the axis of the body, against a surface 230 which acts as a stopper and which is associated with these organs.
Preferably, the pressing of the front edges of the body 227, covered by the edges of the cover or the bottom, is carried out against the aforementioned stop 230 by the same stroke which passes the upper edge of the body, with the cover or the bottom, between the folding members 221, 229 for folding the edges of the lids or the bases. Thanks to this way of proceeding, one obtains an irreproachable compression and live edges as indicated, on a larger scale, in fig. 33.
The pressure mechanism 205 and 211 can be made to achieve not only compression but also narrowing of the end plug. When a thermoplastic adhesive material is employed to join the end plug to the container body, the inner pressure members 205 and / or the outer pressure members 211 may be provided with heaters which provide, during pressing, the pressure. heat required to achieve adhesion. to obtain an impeccable closure of the container, special attention must be paid to the conformation and the arrangement of the pressure members. Figs. 34 to 38 show different conformations of the pressure members used to constitute a recrient with a quadrangular section.
Fig. 34 shows the container 231 between the four pressure members 232 to 236 before the omen, According to the invention, the two raors of
<Desc / Clms Page number 22>
External pressure 832,833, opposite to each other, are longer than the sides of the container on which the more must press and the other two pressure dies 234, 235 have the same length as the final length of the sides of the container on which these dead 234 and 235 must exert their pressure. These pressure jaws 232 to 235 are mounted on the head 200 and are controlled by the ramp 213 (see Figs. 21,22).
The ramp 213 of the head 200 is preferably constructed so that the two longer outer pressure jaws 232, 233 have completed their inward movement, when the other two shorter pressure jaws 234, 235 are still moving. towards the inside. By virtue of this arrangement, the short pressure jaws 234, 236 slide along the inner surfaces of the pressure jaws 232, 233 and thus prevent the container material from being pressed out, between the long jaws and the short jaws, particularly at the angles. In order that the application of the short pressure jaws against the long pressure jaws is done in an irreproachable manner, it is advisable to chamfer the ends of the short jaws as shown in fig. 35 and 36.
Fig. 35 shows the four pressure members in their position during pressing.
The compression members shown in FIGS. 35,36 produce sharp-edged angles at the end plugs.
If these obturators are to have rounded corners, the two short pressure jaws can be provided with a beak-shaped wedge. Figs. 37 and 38 show such pressure members 241, 242 with the nozzles 243.
