<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE MANUFACTURING OF HOLLOW OBJECTS BY
DISCHARGE OR CREEP.
The invention relates to the. manufacture of hollow objects such as air or gas cylinders, or hollow propeller blades, in light alloys, more especially in aluminum or magnesium alloy.
When making by upsetting or deep drawing objects such as air or gas cylinders, it has been proposed to stretch, push back or stamp the open ends, but in this way of operating one encounters difficulties, mainly when, as is frequently the case, the neck or root is thin in section because longitudinal cracks readily occur in the extent where the punching is performed.
Known methods of manufacture are also subject to the disadvantages resulting from a large number or series of operations and from the need to heat the material between successive work passes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the invention is to provide improved methods and apparatus for the manufacture of hollow objects such as gas or air cylinders or hollow blades of aerial propellers and thrusters, by means of which these drawbacks are overcome and the production is simplified and accelerated, while the quality of the object is not impaired or is even improved.
The method of manufacturing hollow objects using light alloys, according to the invention, consists in pushing or creeping the material constituting the object on a mandrel and through an orifice between the mandrel and the wall of the container for the material, to shape the material, at the front of the mandrel to form an end closed to the object during upsetting or creep, to form an externally thickened wall at the location of the open neck or root of the object, and subsequently closing the thickened wall to reduce or eliminate the neck opening.
The externally thickened wall at the site of the open neck or root of the object, is closed either as a final operation of the upsetting or creep matrix, or it may be in a separate operation to form a reinforced neck, and the a satisfactory product due to the longitudinal flow of the metal throughout the object is obtained with great production convenience.
The same general method is adopted for the manufacture by upsetting or creeping of hollow blades of aerial propellers or thrusters having closed ends, the externally reinforced or thickened root being reduced or shrunk, so as to completely or notably close the perforation or cavity. central to the root of the blade, either as a final opera- tion of the backflow or creep matrix, or if necessary in a separate operation.
The blades are preferably upset or flowed approximately in shape, employing an aerodynamically shaped die or container, and a cooperating mandrel, and preferably also the discharge or flow die is conditioned to be modified simultaneously, so as to provide the necessary modification of the section of the upset hollow blade.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Alternatively the upturned hollow blank may be cylindrical, the aerodynamic shape subsequently imparted to it by machining or other suitable manner, in which case the cylindrical upsetting die may ultimately act as a stretching die to reduce the reinforced root, such as. an integral phase of the discharge process.
In addition, it is possible to associate with the delivery or flow die a mold or shaping device in which the blade is forced or flowed and which gives it a slight twist or a conformation in a portion of a helix, which is necessary, or else this conformation can be communicated by subsequent hot work of the pale.
The invention will be described more fully below with reference to the accompanying drawings which schematically illustrate, by way of example, embodiments of a press for making hollow objects such as blades of aerial propellers or air bottles. or gas, using light alloys, by upsetting or creep, and in which:

Figs. 8 to 10 illustrate a modified form of press, showing the different stages in the production of a cylindrical hollow object, such as an air or gas cylinder;
Fig. 11 shows the general shape of the object before it is finished.
Referring to the drawings, but first of all more specifically to Figs. 1 to 3, 1 generally designates the container or body of the press, comprising a vertical perforation 2 of cylindrical shape, suitable for receiving a billet or a bloom 3, which has preferably received a prior conformation having a recess or hollow central 4 intended to receive the mandrel or nose 5 of a plunger with two diameters, the major portion 6 of which is cylindrical and adapts to the opening or perforation 2 of the container or body 1. 7 designates a collar or shoulder provided between the mandrel 5 and the large diameter 6 of the plunger.
The container 1-is shown as removably mounted on a support or frame 8 by means of bolts 9, the support comprising a vertical opening 10 through which passes the returned body, and above which, to the lower end of the perforation 2 of the container or body, is arranged a delivery or flow matrix 11, preferably of almost elliptical shape, corresponding to the large external section of the air helix blade to be delivered or flow, the die 11 preferably comprising a chamfered wall 12 leading to the delivery orifice, to facilitate the flow of the; material from the perforation of the container to this orifice, and for the purpose which will be described below.
In the practice of the invention, with this form of press, the heated billet 3, made of light alloy, is placed in the container and occupies the lower part of its perforation 2, adjacent to the chamfered wall 12 of the delivery die or creep 11, and, during the initial movement of the plunger, its nose or mandrel of smaller diameter, 5, plunges into the billet 3, first of all in the previously formed recess 4, and, after filling this recess, it forces a certain
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
part of the material of the.
billet to flow backwards, upwards, into the annular space between the mandrel 5 and the perforation 2 of the container or body, while in the continued advancement of the plunger, before the end of the mandrel does not dasse in the discharge die 11, the shoulder or collar 7, from the anterior end of the large diameter portion 6, enters the opening 2 and causes the discharge or flow of the material from the mandrel. billet through the opening of the die It ..
Subsequently, in the continued movement of the plunger, the nose or mandrel 5 enters the opening of the die and internally conforms the closed end, as shown in 13 da, ns fig. 2, and as this mandrel moves forward with the epqulement 7, the latter causes the discharge or flow of the material of the billet through the annular space between the periphery of the mandrel 5 and the orifice of the die 11, the hollow center of the driven object being therefore considerably longer than the mandrel 5, as shown in fig. 2, and having a closed and solid front end 14, and an outer neck or root. thickened, 15, still in container or body 1.
The mandrel is then withdrawn and the repressed object is removed, so that its externally thickened root can be necked so as to completely close, or notably the central perforation or cavity, by hot hammering or in another suitable manner, to unless it is decided to carry out this reduction of the outer diameter as a final operation. of the upsetting process, using the chamfered wall of the upsetting die 11.
In the latter case, after withdrawal of the plunger and removal of the mandrel 5, the washer or collar 7 is replaced by a pressure plate 15 (or alternatively a second plunger can be used) and then, as shown in, fig. 3 the press is closed again and the pressure plate or plate acting on the posterior annular wall of the eroded root
16, pushes the object 17 downwards through the converging walls 12 of the die 11, thus completely closing the opening.
AT

ture or central cavity 18 of the root of the pale.
The mandrel 5 is preferably elliptical in shape, in accordance with the elliptical opening or orifice of the discharge die 10 and with the section required for the upset blade, and advantageously also its section is variable in accordance with that of this. blade.
When it is desired to modify the thickness of the wall of the blade, recourse can be had, as previously mentioned, to the arrangements schematically represented in FIG. 4, in which the delivery die 11 is provided with movable segments 20 and 21. arranged to move laterally, outwardly of the opening of the die, while the delivery continues and in accordance with the movement of the plunger.
Similar reference numerals denote the same or equivalent members and, as in the embodiments illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3, the opening of the die 11 is equal to the largest cross section of the blade 17 to be delivered, but during the initial phase of the delivery operation, in order to form the reduced portion of the blade which is adjacent from its end, segments 20 and 21 close off the die opening and thereby reduce the extent of its effective cross section as is clearly shown in fig. 5.
While the delivery continues, the segments 20 and 21 of which progressively moved away from their obstructed position, using the actuators 22 and 23 connected, in any suitable manner (not shown), so as to move the segments laterally outward during a predetermined displacement of the plunger, .so as to reproduce the external configuration of the body of the blade 17 at the opening of the die 11.
Figs. 4,6 and 7 also show the mold or conformator which can be associated with the press and in which the blade
17 is driven back in order to impart to it the slight twist or conformation into a portion of the helix required.
The mold or shaper consists of two parts 24 and
25, bolted together at 26, and detachable from each other @
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
in order to allow the removal of the blade 17, the mold being placed below the support or frame 8, in alignment with the opening 10 formed therein, through which passes the expelled object, and comprising a vent or opening 27.
In the arrangement shown in the figs. 4 to 7, the blade as it is pushed back, is almost elliptical or of approximately aerodynamic section, but as will be understood, the hollow blade can, if desired, be of three converging shape, or cylindrical, and can subsequently be given its final shape by pressing or stamping, with or without machine finishing, the reinforced root 16 being reduced or necked in the manner described with reference to figs. 1 to 3.
Hollow propeller or propeller blades produced by the methods described from alloys of magnesium and aluminum, in addition to the advantage of extremely low weight, have shown a satisfactory longitudinal structure which communicates desirable strength properties to them.
In addition, the hollow interior can be easily shaped to adapt the blades to determined conditions of balancing and distribution of material or weight within wide limits, and this interior can, if desired, be filled with cellular material. - milk and preferably inert.
With reference to the freezes. 8 to 11, in which, for the sake of convenience, the manufacture of a cylindrical object has been considered, such an object, that is to say an air or gas cylinder generally designated by 31, is shown in FIG. pnur Ion finishing or final machining operations, such as threading its neck.
In this method of manufacture, a three-part press is used, comprising a container 32 for the heated billet or bloom 33, an upper plunger 34 provided with a nose 35 suitably shaped along the contours of the closed end 36 of the air or gas cylinder 31 and, in conjunction with the diver
34, a sleeve or follower member, external, 37 conditioned to cooperate with the container 32 and drive it downwards, after execution of an initial relative movement determined between the plunger

34 and this container.
38 denotes a lower plunger, or die, telescoping in the container 32 during the movement of the latter, and with which at the end of its stroke the nose 35 of the plunger 34 cooperates to conform the closed end 36 of the bottle to air or gas 31.
The billet or bloom 33 may be a forged blank, previously worked to such an extent that, concurrently with the work carried out during the upsetting, by the press, until the conformation of the air bottle. or gas 31 illustrated in FIG. 11 imparts the desired characteristics to the material of this article, and this billet may be of any suitable or suitable shape, with a generally cylindrical billet being illustrated.
The container 32 has an enlarged diameter mouthpiece
39, in which the billet 33 is disposed at the beginning of the operation and, in the vicinity of this widening, it is provided, in its perforation 40, with an annular projection directed inwards, or constriction, 41, forming a discharge die controlling the outer diameter of any plastic passing through it.
During the initial movement of the plunger 34, the material of the billet 33, during or after it is forced downward by the plunger nose 35, in contact with the lower die plunger 38, is also forced to flow. outwardly and flow backward, through the constriction or creep hole 41, around the plunger, into the enlarged diameter mouthpiece mentioned above, 39, of the container 32.
Fig. 9 illustrates the suitable relative positions of the plunger 34 and the container 32 upon completion of the initial movement, the material of the billet 33 flowing outwardly, having formed an annular neck 42 at the upper end of the the expelled object, the wall of which is inclined towards the section of minimum extent of the die, which forms the discharge opening 41 for
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the major remaining portion of the cylindrical wall of the bottle 31.
Subsequently, during the descent of the plunger 34 its sleeve or external follower 37 comes into engagement with the container 32, which then moves downward with and at the same speed as the plunger 34 as it approaches the lower plunger. laughter or die 38, causing further backward flow or creep of the material of the billet 33 through the constriction or creep orifice 41, due to the reduction of the space for accommodating this material there between the peripheral walls. - ques of the opening 40 of the container on the one hand and the faces in mutual approach, formed by the end of the nose 35 and the concave surface 43 of the lower plunger 38 on the other hand.
This backward creep of the material passes through the narrow annular space delimited by the internal annular projection or creep orifice 41 on the one hand and the surface of the plunger 34 'on the other hand, thereby determining the thickness. of the cylindrical wall of the air or gas cylinder 31, and the. making it substantially uniform throughout its extent.
Fig. 10 shows the parts or organs of the press in their final position, immediately before the removal of the object, the cylindrical wall of the air bottle having flowed upwards, through the orifice 41 , in the manner of a sleeve, around the plunger 34 to an extent corresponding to the length of the completed air cylinder.
Note that the downward movement of plunger 34 and container 32 is stopped before the marginal edge of concavity 43, and lower die or plunger 38 butt with the wall of the internal projection or protrusion or creep opening.
41, so that a handling or protection ring 44 is kept in the form of a circular external protection on the cylindrical wall of the air or gas cylinder 31, in the vicinity of its closed end 36.
After removing the upper plunger
34, and the lower plunger or ma, trice 38, of the container 32, the hollow object can be removed from the latter using a mandrel @
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
which pushes it down relative to the container, observing that the upper surface 45 of the internal annular protrusion 41 is chamfered, whereby it can act as a stretching die during removal of the object, to reduce the diameter of the reinforced and open annular neck 42, so that the excess metal, adjacent to the neck of the bottle, is transported from the outer periphery to form an internal neck reinforcement, 46, as shown in fig. 11 .
Above the protruding ring 44, the outer wall of the air or gas cylinder 31, which has passed through the flow orifice 41 acting as a drawing die, is entirely smooth and cylindrical.
When, however, desired, as will be understood, instead of using the delivery or flow port 41 in the manner of a drawing die to reduce the neck portion of the hollow object, the container 32 can be established in two or more parts, with longitudinal divisions, in order to free the object, which then has its reinforced annular neck or end 42 reduced by hot forging, or hot drawing or hammering, in a rotary hammer or by mechanical upsetting using suitably profiled rollers, any means which can be used to close or shrink the internal reinforcement illustrated in fig, 11 approximately to the section of the finished neck diagrammatically represented at 47 in this figure.
When the finished articles are of conformation other than cylindrical, they can be subsequently treated by hot forging or in another suitable manner, or else, as in the embodiments illustrated in figs. 1 to 7, the object can be forced through a suitably shaped die on a cooperating shaped mandrel.
The present inventions provide a convenient and economical method for the manufacture of hollow objects, such as air or gas cylinders, or air propeller blades or propellants, from light alloys, by discharge or cloud , giving perfected products.
