<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improvements to cooling devices for fan bearings.
The present invention relates to a device serving to cool the bearings of fans and relates mainly to a device of this type applied to fans of the finned type.
The invention applies to fan bearings which are arranged in a passage through which the hot gas is delivered by the fan, and the device according to the invention is intended to pass refrigerant air through. conduits formed around the bearing. The invention is characterized by the fact that the bearing is provided with a cap constituting a duct for the refrigerating air, this cap being supported by tubular arms which also constitute conduits for refrigerating air.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The bearing cap is preferably divided into two chambers separated from each other by a partition supporting the bearing, these chambers communicating with each other by the refrigerant air ducts provided around the bearing, while they communicate with each other. the atmosphere by air intake and exhaust ducts formed by the tubular support arms.
In one of the chambers, an auxiliary fan wheel can be arranged in such a way that, with the aid of this wheel, the refrigerant air is forced to pass from one of the chambers into the other through the air ducts. planned around the landing. A tube can be mounted in one of the support arms to supply lubricant to the bearing arranged in the cap, such that this tube is surrounded by the cooling air.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, two embodiments of the invention applied to finned fans.
Fig. l is an axial section of one of these embodiments.
Fig 2 is a section through line II-II of FIG. 1, part of this figure being removed inside the x-x lines.
Fig. 3 is an axial section of the second embodiment.
Fig. 4 is a section through line IV-IV of f ig. 3.
We will first describe the construction according to Figures 1 and 2.
In the fan box 1, the shaft 3 of the impeller 2 is mounted at b, in a bearing which, according to the invention, is established for cooling by air as follows:
The actual bearing, indicated in 4 and shown as a ball bearing, in this example, is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
fitted inside a body 5, itself mounted in a cap 6 which, with the aid of support arms 7, maintains the assembly inside the box 1. The cap 6 is divided into two chambers 8,9, by a partition 10, in the middle of which the bearing body 5 is fixed by welding or in some other suitable way. The interior of the bonnet is accessible due to the fact that certain parts of this bonnet are established in the form of lids 11, 12 fixed to the cylindrical wall of the bonnet by screws 13.
The covers 11, 12 are both hermetically mounted on the shaft 3, thanks to the provision of suitable gaskets. The shafts 7 (which are two in number here, but which could be provided in greater number) are tubular and communicate with the atmosphere through openings in the wall of the box. In addition, air ducts 14 are provided in the body of the bearing to ensure communication between the chambers formed on either side of the partition 10. These ducts are separated by intermediate walls 14a which at the same time constitute cooling fins. Thanks to the duct system which has just been described, the refrigerant air can enter the bearing and leave it.
To entrain the cooling air, an auxiliary fan or a corresponding device, for example a cooling disc 15 provided with fins 16 and, can be used. which, in this example, is provided in the fan shaft and rotates with this shaft. This disc also plays the important role of dissipating a considerable part of the heat which would otherwise be transferred from the impeller 2 to the bearing by the shaft. During the rotation of the fan, the cooling air is driven in a rapid movement and passes respectively through the ducts of the bearing and of the body 5, which has the effect of dissipating the heat from the bearing and the shaft.
Since it is also important that the lubricant supplied to the bearing is also kept in a cold state, there is provided, in the illustrated embodiment, a pipe
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
17 located at some point in the path of the refrigerant air, for example inside the arm through which this air is introduced.
Of course, the embodiment described above can be modified in various ways.
Thus, in certain cases, a sufficient speed can be imparted to the cooling air without having to resort to the auxiliary fan 16, the bearing being connected inside the fan box in such a way that the impeller 2 creates a empty in the hat 6.
For example, in the embodiment according to FIG. 3, in which the same references have been used to designate the same parts as those of FIGS. 1 and 2, instead of providing an auxiliary fan 16, the necessary vacuum is created inside the cap 6 by making it communicate with the capacity situated upstream of the impeller, using a or more air ducts, for example by means of a slot or gap 21 formed between the cap and the core 18 of the paddle wheel, in which gap a vacuum is established while the wheel is the vanes rotate to expel air in the direction of arrow A. As regards the bearing of the impeller, only the outer part 5 has been shown.
The wheel receives its control via a belt or chain transmission 22, 23, 24, an electric motor 25, which is mounted on the fan box in such a way that the belt or chain 22 can move fully or partially in one of the support arms 7.
This arm also behaves in the manner of a cooling air duct. The bearing is supported by an intermediate partition 27 and cooling fins 29 between which the ducts 14 intended for the cooling air are formed. The wall 27 is established in the form of a tubular screen 28 serving to guide the air in its movement along the bearing. The path traveled by the air, inside the cap 6 is in- @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
indicated by arrows B. It can be seen that the air arriving from the outside passes inside the two arms shown at 7 to enter the cap, from which it escapes through the interval 21. To increase the 'suction action created by the wheel 2 in the gap 21, the latter is surrounded by a flange 30.
Alternatively, either of the two devices provided in the constructions described above can be used to entrain the cooling air.
Welding can be used to a large extent to fix the various parts of the construction together.
As can be seen in the drawings, the cap or casing within which the bearing is enclosed can receive a shape which is in close relation with the hub 18 of the impeller, as well as in a proper manner. to provide the minimum possible air resistance. If a plurality of bearings exposed to hot gases are used, these bearings can, of course, also be arranged in accordance with this invention.
