EPOUVANTAIL SONORE
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

SOUND SCREEN
The present invention relates to a sound scarecrow. We know that a certain percentage of the products of agricultural crops and orchards are destroyed by birds and game. The known devices which are intended to remedy these losses and which have to chase away the animals by terror become ineffective very soon after they are put into service, since the animals and birds become accustomed to them very quickly.
The present invention is a device which intermittently emits sounds intended to frighten animals and birds.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention a spring mechanism or the like wound up slowly, for example by a wind wheel, suddenly discharges when it reaches
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a certain tension by overcoming a force opposed to its relaxation, the energy accumulator serving to control a sound emitter.
Other characteristics of the invention will emerge from the description below and from the appended drawing in which an embodiment of the device according to the invention has been shown by way of example.
FIG. 1 shows this device in horizontal section seen from below.
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view thereof on a smaller scale, the enclosure of the apparatus being assumed to be cut away.
The device shown in the drawing comprises a frame 1, preferably of cast iron, provided with a sleeve 2 in which the control shaft 3 is journaled on one of the ends of which a wind wheel is detachably fixed. 4, preferably removable. The other end of the shaft 3 is provided with a lug wheel 5 which engages with a toothed wheel 6.
The transmission 5,6 which can also be constituted for example by friction wheels, is greatly reduced, so that a small force is sufficient for driving the device. The wheel 6 is mounted loose on a shaft 7 which is fixed housing in one, 8 of the frame 1. A ratchet wheel 9 is then mounted on the shaft 7, and, between the wheels 6 and 9, is wound on the shaft 7 a spring 10 whose ends are connected respectively to the wheels 6 and 9. With the ratchet wheel 9 cooperates a pawl consisting of a spring 11 which is fixed to the casing 12 of the device formed in the form of an acoustic horn which is thus put into resonance during the oscillations of the spring 11.
On the wheel 9 is also fixed a locking tooth 13 whose radial height is greater than that of the ratchet toothing. The frame 1 further comprises several lugs 14 in which are engaged several fixing screws 15 of the horn 12.
The frame also has two guide bushes
15 and 17 for a mast 18 on which the entire device
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is mounted so that it can rotate. Weathervanes 19 and 20 are fixed on the horn 12.
The operating mode of the device is as follows: The wind wheel 4 which is rotated by the wind tends towards the spring 10 by activating the transmission 5,6 because one of the ends of this spring which is connected to the wheel 6 is rotated, while its other end is held stationary with the wheel 9 by the spring-loaded pawl 11.
As soon as the tension of the spring 10 has reached a certain value which is greater than the elastic reaction of the spring 11, the wheel 9 is set in motion which causes the emis- sion by the spring 11 of a rattling noise which occurs. is still considerably amplified by the acoustic horn 12.
Thanks to its inertia, the wheel continues to rotate until the spring 10 is completely relaxed. The arrangement of the locking tooth 13 makes it possible to regulate the tension of the spring 10. To overcome the resistance of the spring 11 by this locking tooth 13, it is obviously necessary to have a greater force than to overcome it using another outside the ratchet wheel 9. Because of this, the process is repeated at specified time intervals.
As indicated above, the apparatus is supported by a rod 18 around which it rotates with the aid of the weather vanes 19 and 20, orienting itself in the direction of the wind, so as to always take a correct position. If necessary, ball bearings can be used to reduce friction, just as the casing of the apparatus can be modified without departing from the scope of the invention.
