<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

;

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
Tbut
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
Les corps de récipients g glissent à travers le guide 44, dont le diamètre d'ouverture est un peu plus grand que le diamètre extérieur des corps de récipients, jusque dans les supports 33 qui se trouvent au-dessous du guide 44 sur le tronçon inférieur des chaînes. 31. Les rails 46 sont adaptés aux supports 33 du tronçon inférieur des chaines 31. Au-desauf du chemin des supports 33 qui se trouvent sur le tronçon inférieur des chaînes sont installés d'autres dispositifs d'insufflation 47 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>
<Desc/Clms Page number 20>
<Desc/Clms Page number 21>
<Desc/Clms Page number 22>
<Desc/Clms Page number 23>

Paper container and method and apparatus for its manufacture.
The invention relates to a paper container for containing oil and further relates to a method and device for manufacturing this container.
Paper containers for containing oil are already known, the inner wall of which is provided with an oil-tight coating. In known paper containers, the oil-tight coating is however very brittle and therefore very sensitive to any mechanical stress, for example to shocks. The object of the invention is particularly
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the use of an oil-tight coating for the inner wall of paper containers, which coating is very elastic and therefore does not come off under impact and the like. The invention further relates to an embodiment of the paper containers such that even the outer walls of the paper containers provide resistance to drops of oil, water, etc.
The invention finally extends to a solid and oil-tight way of closing paper containers.
The process is known which consists in making bottle-shaped paper containers from a tubular sheath by constituting, by means of folding and subsequent compression, a neck which fits. narrowing. The process for the manufacture of such paper containers, according to the invention, makes it possible, in particular for large production, to obtain a clean and regular folding and, therefore, also to achieve a regular bottle neck. and particularly resistant. The invention further relates to an advantageous impregnation process, by which, on the one hand, economical use of the product used for the impregnation is obtained and, on the other hand, damage to the impregnation is avoided. during manufacturing.
The method according to the invention allows a safe and oil-tight closing of paper containers filled with oil. In particular, it is avoided that during closing the neck of the paper container is subjected to excessive forces or that impurities - for example materials used to form the seal of the closure - (- reach as far as in the oil that is in the paper container.
Tools and machines also conform. according to the invention serve for carrying out the method and the invention and allow economical mass production of the paper containers.

Making the tubular sheath.
In the manufacture of the paper container, one begins by winding, according to the known method, a tubular sheath, shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, made up of several layers of paper, rolled up on top of each other and glued together. The outer layer is advantageously constituted by metallized paper; the metallized side faces outward and protects the paper container against damage from drops of oil and water, which can easily reach the outer surface of the container. Drops of oil and water, as well as dust and dirt that may have adhered to it, are easily removed from the metallized surface at any time.
;
Preparing for folding.
: One of the ends of the tubular sheath, shown in fig. 1 and 2, is shaped - according to a known method - by forming overlapping folds and by compressing these folds so as to form a bottle neck. For the preparation of the folding, the fold lines a and 1 are - according to the invention and as shown in FIGS.
3 and 4 - plotted in advance at the end of the sheath, before the end of the sheath is noticeably narrowed or bent, therefore before any major transformation of the part of the sheath to be shaped has taken place. occurred. In this way, a precise position of the lines to be used for folding is ensured and a regular folding is consequently obtained.
On the contrary, in the methods known hitherto, in which the end of the sheath is brought into a solid shape.
EMI6.1
f "1:; -. tapered without any preparation, irregular bending can easily occur. Thanks to the preparation of a sinuous bend following the cross section, bending in which -
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
as shown in fig. 12 - the bands which are on the outer face of the neck of the bottle cover the edges of neighboring bandas, which are on the inner face of the neck of the bottle, thanks to a further development of the invention, alternately two plotting lines a, a and i, i are printed on the outer face and the inner face of the sheath.
For the execution of the indicated working method, one uses, -according to the invention, a mandrel of scribing rules and engaging in one of the ends of the sheath, mandrel of which the outside diameter differs only very little of the inside diameter of the sheath and other scribing rules acting against the outer surface of the liner are used, which rules operate between the scribing rules installed on the mandrel.
A vertical shaft 1 (fig. 29 and 30) carries the mandrel 2, which is provided on its periphery with protruding scribing rules 3. The mandrel 2 is surrounded by radially movable scribing rules 4, which are supported by protrusions 5 on the upper front face of the mandrel 2 and which are guided in the slots of a sleeve 6 also fixed to the shaft 1. On the back inclined and directed outwards from the outer scoring rules A hollow cane-shaped guide 7 engages, which is attached to a hollow shaft 8. The outward facing surfaces of the scribing rulers 3 and the inward facing surfaces of the outer scoring rulers 4 are hollow, so that each of the plotting rules
3 and 4 have sufficiently sharp edges.
The external tracing rules 4 are - as well as in fig. 30 shows this - offset with respect to the internal tracing rules 3. At the start of the working process, the tools are in the position shown in FIGS. 29 and 30.
The upper end of the sheath is then slipped onto tool 2 fitted with scribing rules 3 and tool 2 is engaged in the sheath by lowering the shaft 1. Immediately the shaft
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
hollow 8 is pushed down with the hollow cone-shaped guide 7 attached to it, which has the effect of tightening the outer folding rules 4 inward and causing them to act against the outer surfaces of the upper end of the sheath. By virtue of this action of the outer folding rules 4, the desired parts of the inner surface of the upper end of the sheath press strongly against the inner folding rules 3, which thereby imprint fold lines at the bottom. inner face of the upper end of the sheath.
If, after the end of the action of the bending rules, the hollow shaft 8 and the guide 7 are again moved upwards, the outer bending rules are again pushed outwards by a spring 9 in spiral shape acting against their protrusions 5. These tools should be used in particular if the sheath is made of a sensitive raw material.
If the sheaths are made of an insensitive raw material, the tools shown in FIGS. 31 and 32 can be used. These tools correspond to the device described above with regard to the stamp I and the mandrel 2 provided with bending rules 3. A hollow shaft 10 and enclosing the rod 1 carries the hollow cylindrical tool II, which is provided with rules. of tracing 12. These outer tracing rules 12 engage, in the radial direction, in the interstices located between the inner tracing rules 3.
In the use of this device for the preparation of the sleeves to be shaped, the upper end of the sleeves is slipped onto the tool 2 which is engaged in the sleeve by lowering the shaft I; immediately the shaft 10 is pushed down with the hollow cylindrical tool 11. At this point, the ridges of the scribing rulers 12 produce marks on the outer surface of the upper end of the sheath, which meet. at the same time sits tight against the inner 3 way folding gels. such that these 3 folding rules also print lnes
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
centered as the final shape of the bottle neck to be made.
Above the tool 14 is disposed a shaft 15 movable upwards and downwards, which carries a sleeve 16. In the guide slots of this sleeve 16 are arranged, opposite the grooves of the bending tool. 14, folding rules 17, which are supported by a ring 18, this ring itself being fixed to the above-mentioned sleeve 16. The front end of the shaft 15 is cone-shaped and s engages in a corresponding recess of the lower folding tool 14; in this way, the sleeve 16, with the bending tools 17 adapted to it, is centered with respect to the lower bending tool 14. The shaft 15 is surrounded by a hollow shaft 19, also movable upwards and downwards, which carries a guide casing in the form of a hollow cone 20.
The oblique upper part of the back of the folding rules 17 is clamped against the hollow cone-shaped guide surface of the guide casing 20 under the effect of a circular spring 21, which surrounds the lower part of the cage formed by the folding rules 17.
At the start of operation of the device described, the upper tools 15 to 21 are located well above the shaping chuck 13 and the folding bell 14. The shaping chuck 13 carries the sheath traced previously.
The lines drawn beforehand are in the correct position opposite the grooves of the folding bell 14 and opposite the folding rules 17. The correct position of the tool is ensured by the fact that the preliminary marking takes place. - say that the sheath is already on the shaping mandrel 13, which supports the bending bell 14. It can be seen from figs. 29 and 31, that the tools 2 have recesses and that the folding pocket 14 can penetrate during the preliminary marking in the recess of the grooved tools 2.
Shaft 15 and shaft 19 are moved down. Tbut
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
firstly, these two parts, as well as the tools 17 and 20 which are adapted to them, are in the position shown in FIG. 33. As soon as this position is reached, the shaft 15 remains stationary. However, the shaft 19 is pushed further downwards. The upper part of the folding rules is inclined inwards under the effect of the casing 20 which acts against their back, against the force of the spring 21. In this operation, the ring 18 serves axis of rotation to the folding rules 17 which tilt inward.
The folding rules 17 penetrate into the grooves of the folding bell 14 and operate the pre-bending. The constitution of the correct folds is favored by the fact that the folding rules 17 and the ribs of the folding bell 14 have sharp edges. For this reason, the ribs of the folding bell 14 have hollow surfaces on the outside. After the described operation of tools 15 to 21, the shaft 19 is immediately moved upwards with the guide shell 20 attached thereto. The shaft 15 and the parts which are adapted to it 16,17,18,21 follow.
Compression of folds.
The folds having undergone the preliminary breakage according to the method described are first of all, in accordance with the invention, compressed flat only on the upper edge, as shown in FIGS. 8 to 10. Since the upper edge, which, as the future neck of the bottle, receives the smaller diameter, is quite prepared by the preliminary breaking, one obtains at the upper edge more easily than at other places , during the compression of the folds, a regular overlap which makes that, during the subsequent pressing of the other parts of the neck of the bottle, the regular position of the folds will continue to reduce symmetrically to the bottom.
For the flat compression of the upper pord, the tools shown in fig. 35 and 36, namely: a
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
Collet chuck 22 and an adapter sleeve 23 attached to a shaft 24. The upper part of the collet chuck 22 is thinner than the recess of the release sleeve 23. The previously broken sheath is pushed onto the collet chuck 22; then the chuck 22 and the sleeve 23 are tightened against each other, which produces the result shown in figs. 8 to 10.
The regular sinuous shape, obtained at the upper edge of the paper container, determines the final regular shape, which results from the pressure between the clamping tools 26,27, which correspond exactly to each other and which are shown in fig. 37 and 38, these tools determining the final shape of the container - fig.II and 12 - and operating in all points a wandering. flat folds.
Impregnation of the internal walls of the paper container.
The internal face of the sheath finished in accordance with fig. It and 12 is provided with a protective coating before the bottom is inserted. The application of the protective layer on the internal face of the body of the container before the insertion of the base is advantageous because, in this state, the body of the container has two openings and the interior is therefore easily accessible. In this way, the volatile elements contained in the body used for the coating can be easily spread; when hot application of materials, the coating can be quickly cooled. It is further advantageous that the application of the protective layer takes place after shaping of the container body, because otherwise the protective layer could be damaged during the folding and clamping process.
When applying the protective layer, the body of the container will advantageously be held in such a way that the narrowed neck is directed downwards, as appears in FIG. 13. The material used to constitute the protective layer is immediately projected onto the internal surface.

dull body of the container. The excess amount of the sprayed material flows downward through the neck of the bottle. For paper containers which are to be used to contain oil, it is advantageously possible to use for the protective layer a polymerizate or a derivative of unsaturated organic combinations, in particular of the type acrylic esters or esters. vinyls, for example aceto-vinyl esters.
These polymerizates provide a coating which is not only oil tight, but also very elastic and therefore very resistant to any stress to which the paper containers are subjected, for example to shock.
These impregnating agents can be applied in the form of solutions. Solvents are expensive; e it is therefore recommended to provide an installation for the recovery of the dispersed solvent. However, it is preferable to emulsify the mentioned polymerizates which serve as impregnating agents with water. By employing aqueous emulsions, costly solvents are spared as well as inconvenient recovery facilities. The conditions for preparing and using the emulsion are improved if small amounts of a solvent - for example low volatility bitanol - are added.
In order to remove the solvent and the free parts of acetic acid which still emerge from the formation of the acetic esters, as well as the aqueous elements of the emulsion, a current of air is blown through the paper container. , which produces rapid evaporation of the material to be removed.
If an aqueous emulsion of highly polymerized derivatives of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons is used for the impregnation of the inner wall of paper containers, it can be done only after evaporation of the aqueous element from the emulsion. the polymerizates remaining on the internal surface of the paper container completely cover the internal surface,

but form a large number of corpuscles not entirely welded to each other. In this case, it is recommended to moisten the internal surface of the body of the container with alcohol or with another very volatile solvent after the aqueous element of the emulsion has evaporated, for example to rinse. the body of the container with alcohol.
Under the effect of alcohol, the various corpuscles of the polymerizates are slightly dissolved on their surface, so that during the evaporation of the alcohol which follows, they merge together. sort of with each other.
For the application of the protective layer on the inner surface + of the body of the container, the device shown in FIGS. 39a and b and 40. In this device, on two pairs of toothed wheels are guided transport chains 31, which are connected to each other by shelves 32 arranged perpendicular to the direction of movement of the chains. . On the shelves 32 are arranged pieces of pipes 33 as supports for the container bodies E to receive the inner protective layer. The chains 31, with the shelves 32 attached thereto and the supports 33 for the container bodies g, constantly rotate in the direction of the arrow P with a low speed.
The container bodies to be treated ± are brought on a conveyor belt 34 provided with buckets and pushed by the pushers 35 into the supports 33. The pushers are raised after the pushing movement in the direction of the arrow R and return to their position. high, so that during their backward movement they do not interfere with the supply of other container bodies. After their movement backwards, the pushers 35 again occupy the position shown in fig. 39a and they will, from this position, push the next group of container bodies into the supports 33.
So that the container bodies do not slide out of the supports 33, as soon as they are brought from the horizontal position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
tale in a vertical position, along the path of each support 33 are arranged two guide rails 36, on which rests - as shown in fig. 40 - the neck of the pieces.
A slide 37 animated with an upward and downward movement and placed in a vertical guide is equipped with a carriage 38 movable in the horizontal direction. For each support 33 arranged on a shelf 32, a spray jet 39 and an air blast jet 40 is adapted to this cart 38 movable in the horizontal direction. The slide 37 and the carriage 38 are directed such that the sprinkler and air inflation jets 39 and 40 enter the receptacle bodies, moving downwardly within them. here and follow their movement at the same time.
After the jets mentioned 39 and 40 have traversed almost the entire length of the body of the container, they are rapidly brought upwards and then - counter to the forward movement of the bodies of the containers g - brought back to their position. starting position.
While the water jets 39 accompany the paper containers and go from top to bottom, the material to be applied as a protective layer is projected in the form of a very fine beam of circular section all around against the wall. internal body of the container, so that this wall is completely covered. The excess quantity flows through the neck of the bottle and drains into the manifold 41. From the air insufflation jets 40 is blown, during the upward and downward movement. , a violent current of air vertically against the sprayed internal wall of the body of the container, which has the effect of regulating the coating applied.
The compressed air is supplied to the air blowing jets 40 from the main pipe 41b by the telescopic pipe 42 arranged in a hinged fashion at its ends ...
In. following their advancement, the bodies of the receptacles
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
provided with an internal coating are brought under the large fixed blowing jets 43, which are also connected to the main pipe 4Ib, so that large quantities of air are brought through the container bodies.
As shown in the left part of fig. 39b, the rails 36 which support the neck of the container body end before the upper section of the chains 32 reaches the second pair of cogwheels. A transition device is installed here, which generally consists of a guide 44 and an insufflation pipe 45. As soon as the supports 33 have left the area of the support rails 36, they pass under. the insufflation pipe 45, the air current of which drives the bodies of the receptacles out of the supports 33, which as a result of the narrowing of the neck of their necks offer resistance to the air current.
The container bodies g slide through the guide 44, the opening diameter of which is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the container bodies, into the supports 33 which are located below the guide 44 on the lower section. Chains. 31. The rails 46 are adapted to the supports 33 of the lower section of the chains 31. Above the path of the supports 33 which are located on the lower section of the chains are installed other insufflation devices 47;
below this path there is another collector 4Ia for the liquid which would still drip from the bodies of the receptacles. Thanks to the mentioned arrangement, the upper section and the lower section of the transport chains 31 equipped with supports 33 are made usable for the process of coating application and aeration of vessel bodies. It is advantageous that, for this operation, the direction of the axis of the container bodies is not changed.
In the event that in one place an application is made in too large a quantity, the excess quantity will run out in a di-
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
rection; this flow will not be impeded by the fact that the container is overturned when the supports 33 circulate around the perimeter of the second toothed wheel. After crossing the second section, the supports 33 leave the zone of the lower support rails 46; The containers are then driven by an insufflation pipe 48 out of the supports 33 and arrive via an inclined plane 49 on a transport belt 50.
It is further recommended to recommend each individual watering jet 39 by means of a particular sensitive member so that, during the downward movement of the watering jet 39, the projection of the material to be , apply cease, if, in the support 33 assigned to the watering jet in question, there is no container body. The means concerning the execution of such sensitive organs and such commands are known, so that it is unnecessary to say more here on this subject.
The draining of the excess quantity of the material serving to constitute the protective layer can be facilitated by the fact that, in particular at the upper section of the chains 31, a shaking movement is also imparted, for the production of which it is possible use, for example, a small hammering device or a non-circular, irregularly shaped pulley, the effect of which is felt on the upper section of the two chains.
In cases where, with the device shown in fig. 39 and 40, an emulsion of highly polymerized derivatives of aliphatic hydrocarbons will have been sprayed on the inner wall of the bodies of the receptacles and in cases where, after the evaporation of the aqueous element of the emulsion, the polymerizates precipitated on the internal surface of the receptacle bodies do not constitute corpuscles completely welded together and with the others, the receptacle bodies once again pass through the corresponding device, in fig. 39 and 40. With
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
watering jets 39, alcohol or another solvent is then sprayed onto the impregnated internal wall.
By blowing in air by means of blowing jets 40,43,47, the alcohol is evaporated, the corpuscles of the polymerizates dissolved by the alcohol at their upper surface then bonding together.
The resulting residues which contain evaporated alcohol are sucked out of the device and can be taken to a recovery plant according to a known method.
Insertion of the bottom into the body of the container.
After the container body has been provided, according to the above data and in fig. 13, with an internal protective layer h, a strip of adhesive 1 is placed at the end intended to receive the bottom (fig. 14).
To manufacture the base intended to be inserted into the body of the receptacle, the washer c of thick paper or cardboard shown in fig. 15, a part in the form of a bowl, in which a rigid cardboard washer d is inserted in order to reinforce the actual surface of the bottom, as shown in FIG. 16. It is recommended to join the washer d over its entire surface with the part ± in the form of a bowl by means of an oil and waterproof adhesive.
In addition, the outer edge and the surface, later intended for the interior of the container, of the base prepared according to the method described c are provided with a coating e of the same adhesive, which is also added as a protective layer to inside the container body g.
After this preparation, the bottom is introduced into the body of the container, as shown in fig. 17. During this introduction, the adhesive 1 applied in sufficient quantity is somewhat pushed back inwards, so that at the place of the transition between the body and the bottom of the container a adhesive layer 11 of annular shape, filling the angle between the body of the container and the surface of the bottom, layer by which the seal is ensured
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
between the bottom and the body of the container.
After this assembly of the bottom and the body of the container, the lower edges of the body of the container and the bottom are crimped, so that they rest against the washer d and support it (fig. I8, in which in view of (a clearer picture, the protective and adhesive layers h, l, e have not been reproduced). The devices necessary for the performance of this work are known; it is therefore not necessary to describe these devices here.
Oil-tight seal of the neck of the paper container.
To close the neck of the paper containers manufactured in accordance with the above data, it is possible to use known lids, advantageously made of sheet metal; the edge of these covers, in the form of a gutter, receives the upper end of the container. We know the method which consists of. interposing a seal material between the neck of the container and the edge of the gutter-shaped cover, which is clamped with the top end of the container.
The danger of the seal material falling into the container is avoided in accordance with the invention by introducing a flexible material into the edge of the gutter-shaped cover prior to assembly thereof with the upper end. It is particularly recommended to pour into the edge of the gutter-shaped lid a gasket material which has been made liquid by heating and which after cooling will assume a soft solid state. For the oil-proof closure of paper containers it is possible to pour animal glue into the gutter of the cover; it is advantageous to mix this animal glue with an emollient. For the same purpose, it is also possible to use the polymerizates of derivatives of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons.
Depending on the purpose for which the paper containers are intended, other materials can also be used, such as, for example, asphalt,
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
gutta-percha, etc.
Figs. 19 and 20 show the above-mentioned oil-tight closure of the neck of a bottle-shaped paper container filled with oil.
The cover 52 made of sheet metal is provided with an edge in the form of a gutter r, into which has been poured animal glue in the hot state, so that the channel formed by the edge r is gradually filled. close to two-thirds. This glue is mixed with an emollient, for example glycerin, so that, after cooling, it takes on a flexible solid state.
Assembling the cover 52 with the paper container
51 only takes place usefully after the glue poured into the gutter-shaped edge r has hardened, so that by handling the cover 52 there is no danger of the glue p still liquid spilling out .
The cover is placed on the neck of the paper container, while the paper container is on the turntable 54 of the device shown in FIG. 41. The cover is tightly clamped on the neck of the bottle by means of the piston 55 movable up and down, the head of which is arranged so as to be able to turn slightly on the shaft.
The turntable 54 and the bottle on the table are then moved in a slow circular motion; the crimping wheel 57 which is on the carriage 56 is clamped con. be the edge of the cover 52, which has the effect of crimping the edge. The strong and flexible glue completely fills the space around the edge of the cover, to which it has been rimmed, and makes a good seal. The interior connection of the ring of adhesive p to the neck of the bottle can be improved, particularly in cases where the glue contains no or virtually no emollient, by heating the edge of the bottle. cover during assembly with the paper container, which can be achieved for example by means of a piston re-

heated 55.
In this case, the head of the piston 55 is equipped with an electric heater. It is also possible to proceed in a corresponding manner when assembling the bottom part with the body of the container.
In another embodiment of the closure, corresponding to the invention, there is interposed between the neck of the container and the cover provided with an edge in the form of a gutter a sheet of paper, of metallic paper, of fabric, etc., which is provided with a coating formed by the elastic and jointing material, mentioned above. Preference will be given to a material which - such as, for example, the polymerizates, several times mentioned, of elastic unsaturated hydrocarbon derivatives - has adhesive power.
Figs. 21 to 23 show the closure corresponding to the preceding data of the neck of a bottle-shaped paper container filled with oil. Between the neck of the receptacle 51 and the cover 52, when closing the receptacle, a circular sheet 58 made of paper, fabric, mica, metallic paper, etc. is interposed. This sheet 58 is provided with a coating m, which is preferably annular in shape. The coating can further extend over the entire underside or also over both surfaces of the sheet 58.
The various sheets 58 can also be produced by punching out a strip prepared for this purpose. It is also very convenient to use prepared strips, which correspond to FIG. 23; the sheets 58 can be removed from these strips as they go. By wandering the edge r of the cover 52 over the neck of the receptacle 51, the sheet 58, which consists of a very elastic material, adapts at the neck of the container; it is then that the outer edge of the cover 52 is crimped.
During this operation, the sharp edges of the lid are clamped against the wall of the container; these sharp edges, pressed against the wall of the. \\ container, cut off the protruding parts of the widely measured sheet of paper 58.
<Desc / Clms Page number 21>
Where the coating consists of materials which become liquid - or heat tacky, it is recommended to undertake the tightening of the cover or the crimping of the edge with heated tools. Such tools are known, so that their description is not necessary.
Reinforcement of the conical neck of the paper container.
It further results from the invention that the conical neck of the paper container can be reinforced by the production of an outwardly projecting bulge; a neck of a paper container reinforced in this way by a bulge w is shown in figs. 24 and 25.
This annular bulge protruding outwardly on the neck of the paper container is produced when the previously folded upper part of the tubular sheath is compressed by pushing in the direction of the axis of the tube. container. The execution of the process and the tools necessary for this purpose are shown in fig. 42 to 44. For the compression of the previously bent end of the sheath g and for obtaining an annular bulge w, a die 60 and a piston 61 are used. The anterior end of the piston tapers several times. times and ends with a journal 62, provided with a conical end.
The die is composed of the two main parts 64 and 65. These two parts are tightly clamped together during the pressing work. Between the two parts 64 and 65 is arranged a divided ring 66. Next to this ring, a groove 67 is made in part 65. At the outlet of the die is fixed a cutting plate 68. The sheath ± folded beforehand is placed. on the piston 61 and pushed by this piston inside the die 60, so that the leading edge protrudes a little beyond the cutting edge of the cutting plate 68.
When inserting the piston (fig. 43 and 44) the most are compressed. At the same time, the front edge of the sheath ± is pushed in the direction of the axis, so that the ma-.
<Desc / Clms Page number 22>
The material subjected to the thrust fills the groove 67 and forms an annular bulge w projecting outwardly. As the edge 63 of the piston 61 enters the hole in the cutting plate 68, the upper edge of the compressed sheath is cut clean. The paper container provided with an outwardly protruding bulge in this manner is impregnated by the method described above after compressing the folds of the neck and producing the bulge.
Closure of paper containers, the neck of which is provided with a bulge protruding outwards.
The outwardly projecting bulge, described in the preceding paragraph, can, according to a further development of the invention, be used to hold a closure cap, which engages over the annular bulge. mentionned. Such a closure cap is shown in FIGS. 24 and 25. It is preferable to use known closure caps which can shrink. A cover t can also be fitted above the bulge w and below the closure cap s.
Closure of paper containers, the neck of which has an edge projecting inwards.
A strengthening of the neck of the paper container can also be obtained by constituting it, in accordance with FIG. 26, an edge projecting inward therefrom. It also results from the invention that it is possible to use for the closure of such a paper container a cover u in the form of a bowl made of cardboard, sheet metal, celluloid, etc., and an annular washer forming gasket = oil-proof rubber or similar material. The lower surface of the bowl-shaped cover u is provided with a stamped groove v. The inner diameter of the annular seal washer x is smaller than the diameter of the neck of the container.
The washer x forming a seal est.posée on the neck of the receptacle; then-. as shown in fig. 27 - the cover
<Desc / Clms Page number 23>
u is tight inside the neck. The inner edge of the gasket washer x is thereby introduced into the neck of the container. The lower edge of the cover is widened by crimping and clamped against the lower surface of the edge thus introduced y of the neck of the container, which is shown in fig. 28. By this measure, the washer forming the seal is also tightened strongly against the upper edge of the neck of the container and thus a tight seal is obtained.
The extension of the lower edge of the cover is promoted by the groove v. During crimping, the material which constitutes this groove flows in a way in the radial direction outward; throat flattens out or even goes so far as to completely diaparise. By virtue of the flow of the material out of the groove towards the outer edge, one avoids subjecting the material to an excessive force by extending the lower edge of the cover.
