<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Improvements to opening devices for cardboard boxes".
The present invention consists of improvements to opening devices for cardboard boxes of the kind (hereinafter referred to as the kind described) in which an end closure is effected by means of hinged tabs formed by extensions of the side walls of the box. the box. There are already known opening devices for cardboard boxes of the kind described (see British Patent No. 404026) in which a cutting cord is fixed inside the end closure of the box, the arrangement being such that 'After the box has been opened by the action of the cutting string, it is possible to form a discharge hole by pressing between a finger and a thumb the sides of the box so that the slit made by the tape s' opens.
One of the aims of the invention is to provide a com @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
combination of the means of the kind described by means of which the discharge orifice is formed at the same time as the operation carried out by the cutting cord.
Pursuing this aim, the invention consists of a cardboard box of the type described, and comprising a cutting cord located between two of the end closure tabs, characterized in that the tab or tabs located below of the cutting rope are perforated or notched on all or part of the surface normally covered by the rope, so that when the boot has been opened by the action of the rope, a discharge hole (or holes spillage) delimited by the edges of the placket (s) at the perforated or indented locations or by the edges and the adjacent side of the boot is provided.
Specific examples of the invention, applied to a cardboard box of oblong cross section, will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the box open at the top, ready to receive its contents.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the short end legs and one of the closed side legs.
Fig. 3 shows the top of the box fully closed, with the cutting cord secured in position.
Fig. 4 shows the appearance of the boot during the operation carried out by the cutting cord and the orifice which has been produced by this operation.
Fig. 5 is a view corresponding to FIG. 1 / of a modified form of box.
Fig. 6 shows the appearance of the box shown in FIG. 5 during the operation of the cutting cord, and the orifices which have been produced by this operation.

The same reference numerals indicate the same parts in the different figures.
The boot is made of a single blank folded in the usual manner in the form shown in FIG. 1, in which it is ready for packaging a powdered, granulated, flaked material or the like. After the boot is filled, the mouth is closed by folding -inward the two opposite short end legs 1 and 2, these legs resting, when folded up, in the same plane with a gap between their ends. extremities. One of the legs of the long sides 3 is then folded over and fixed by means of adhesive material to the legs 1 and 2.
This tab 3 is notched along its free edge, as shown at 4, over a length equal to or less than the interval between the ends of the tabs 1 and 2.
This scalloped portion has a width, for example about 1/4 inch, approximating the width of the lace which is intended to be used as a cutting cord. This lace 5 is first placed over the tab 4, covering the notched part and in a position close to the hinge of the second long tab 6. The lace extends over the entire length of the top of the boot. and extends a small distance beyond the edge of the boot so as to provide a tip which can easily be gripped by the fingers. The tab 6 is then folded back and fixed to the tab 3 and also to the lace 5 by an adhesive material.
Tab 6 has a short notch or notch or other reinforcement a short distance (e.g. about 1/4 inch in length) at point 7, at the end of the tab next to the end of the lace and lying at the above the edge of the lace away from the hinge of the leg. When it is desired to open the boot, the end of the lace is drawn back along its anchor line, with the result that the strip of tab 6 covering the lace is torn.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
rée and is detached from the top of the box with the lace, leaving a suitable discharge hole 8 as shown in fig. 4.
This orifice is formed by the edges of the tab 3 around the indented part 4 and the upper edge of the adjacent side 9 of the box. The notch or like notch 7 ensures that the tearing of the tab 6 begins at the desired location and if it is desired that the tab can be easily torn and the tear continues in the correct direction, it is cutting can be continued along the length of the tab in a line covering the edge of the lace under the firm of a notch or a partial notch. Similar notches or notches can be made along the hinge of the tab connecting the latter to side 9 of the box.
When the first folded legs overlap each other or when the gap between them is not wide enough to allow a discharge hole of sufficient length between their edges (as would be the case if the box had approximately a square section), the part of one or both legs which lies below the free end of the next folded leg may be fully indented or, which is preferable, on a an amount less than the length of the tab so as to provide a hem that matches the notched portion of the next tab to be folded over.
In the variant of the invention shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, the tab 3 instead of being notched on the edge to provide a simple discharge slot is perforated, as shown at 10, by four threes of suitable size and shape by which, when the cutting cord is drawn back, the contents can be spilled. In this example, the perforations
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
10 are located in the middle of the tab 3 and the cutting cord is placed above the perforations, below the tab 6, and is held in position by an adhesive material.
This arrangement has the advantage that a better grip can be obtained between the tabs along the edges of the tabs when closing the bolte, and also that the edge of the boot is not deforated by the fact that the orifice is formed very close to the edge. Preferably the tab 6 of this arrangement is cut or perforated along both edges of the lace cord to ensure that the desired part of the tab is removed by the cord or lace.
The part of the tab or tabs situated below the tape may in either of the above examples be provided with a single hole or with several holes arranged in one or more rows over the whole or part of the surface normally covered by the lace.
