@
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
@
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Perfeotionnemsnts to internal combustion engines".
In combustion engines operating by carburetion, the power is generally regulated by throttling the gas flow using a shutter or valve placed on the intake duct,
According to this adjustment method, the filling rate, that is to say the absolute pressure of the gas charge admitted into the cylinder, is all the lower as the power required of the engine is reduced.
The volumetric compression ratio of the engine (ratio of the total capacity of the cylinder to the capacity of the explosion chamber), being constant it follows that the absolute effective pressure of the mixture at the end of the compression stroke The pressure varies according to the degree of intake and may drop, during idling, to a value much lower than that corresponding to operation at full intake.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This characteristic has an unfavorable influence on the efficiency of use of the engine when it is operated at reduced intake, as is generally the case in practice.
To overcome this drawback, the present invention provides, in an engine with a variable volumetric compression ratio during operation, various means of automatically ensuring the operation of the member for adjusting the volumetric compression ratio as a function of the variations. of the filling rate so as to maintain constant the absolute effective compression pressure of the explosive mixture whatever the power developed by the engine, which will have the consequence of reducing its average specific consumption.
Various embodiments of this invention are shown in the accompanying drawings.
FIG. 1 shows a schematic section of an engine established according to a first form of application of the invention.
FIG. 2 shows a schematic section of an engine established according to a second form of application of the invention;
FIG. 3 shows, in schematic section, an alternative embodiment of the invention.
FIGS. 4 and 5 show two schematic sections of another variant embodiment of the invention.
FIG. 6 shows a schematic section of an engine established according to a third form of application of the invention,
In the example of FIG. 1, the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine cylinder 1 comprises a cylindrical part 2 in which an auxiliary piston 3 can slide, the position of which is determined by that of a control lever 4; any displacement of the @ piston 3 'causes a variation in the volume of the explosion chamber V and consequently modifies the volumetric compression rate of the engine.
The adjustment flap 5 of the carburetor 6, or intake moderator, is connected to the control handle II by a linkage 7-8-9-10.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A rod 12 also connects the lever 4 to the lever 5 so as to combine the movements of these two levers
It can be seen that under these conditions any operation of the control lever II will have the effect of simultaneously modifying the degree of admission of gases to the engine and the rate of volumetric compression, and it will suffice to suitably choose the dimensions of the various elements of the linkage so that these two simultaneous modifications lead to maintaining substantially constant the effective pressure of the explosive mixture at the end of compression,
In the example of FIG. 2, the lever 4 which controls the variation of the volumetric compression ratio of the engine is no longer connected to the lever 7 controlling the shutter of the car burator. A variable volume capacity 13 is communicated by a duct 14, with the engine intake duct 16. The piston or movable wall 17, of the capacity 13 is connected to the lever 4 by a rod 18. A spring 15 is arranged between the lever 4 and the cylinder. Under these conditions, any drop in pressure occurring in the intake duct 16, as a consequence of the closing of the shutter 5, will produce a collapse of the piston 17 which will cause the piston 3 in the same direction so as to increase the pressure. volumetric compression in the cylinder.
Opening shutter 5 will produce a similar automatic maneuver but in the opposite direction. It can be seen that this arrangement makes it possible to achieve the same results as that of FIG. I.
The examples described are for the purpose of clarifying the subject of the invention, and they have been simplified for this purpose.
In the practical embodiment, it will obviously be necessary to replace the single lever 4 of FIGS. 1 and 2 by a kinematic connection comprising an irreversible element of a known type such as screw and nut, worm screw, or slide, in order to prevent the control of the compression adjustment piston from being hampered by the high due to the driving explosion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
To reduce the force to be exerted in the maneuver, it is also possible to interpose a servo-motor mechanism of any known type between the conductive members such as 7 FIG. I or 17 fig.2 and the duct member such as 4 fig. I and 2.
To prevent the operation of the piston from taking place during engine time, it is also possible to interpose one or more springs in the irreversible kinematic connection.
Thus a continuous movement of the conductive member will be able to produce a discontinuous movement of the adjustment piston which will only move during the engine intake and exhaust times corresponding to a lower resistance.
Finally, the engine driver can be provided with the means of modifying at any time the calibration of the automatic device which is the subject of the invention by providing any known adjustment means for one or other of the linkage elements. ,
In the example shown in FIG. 3, the modification of the volumetric compression ratio is carried out by modifying, while the engine is running, the length of the connecting rod. For this purpose the connecting rod is in two parts.
A part 19a, forming the big end, ends with an external thread.
It engages in an internal thread which carries the second part 19b, which carries the small end. The small end rests on a pin 20 which forms, with the cross member 21 and the piston pin 22, a universal or cardan joint.
The piston 23 carries on the periphery of its skirt grooves 24 in which lugs 25 which a sleeve 26 carries.
The ring 26, immobilized in the axial direction by a stop 27, fixed to the cylinder or to the casing, carries at its lower part a toothing 28, which meshes with a toothed wheel 290
The wheel 29 is integral with a control shaft 4
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
operation drives, by means of the parts described above,
the rotation of the piston 24 in the cylinder 1 and consequently that of the small end 19 b. - Like the big end 19 a, cannot rotate since it is held by the bent shaft of the motor 30, the two parts of the connecting rod are screwed or unscrewed with respect to each other and this movement causes a modification of the volume of the explosion chamber and thus modifies the volumetric compression ratio
The operation of the shaft 4 can be made dependent either on the intake moderator, as in the example of FIG. 1, or under that of the vacuum prevailing in the intake pipe, as in the example of figure 2,
The example shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 relates to an embodiment of the invention in which the variation in the compression ratio is obtained by means of an extensible piston.
In the cylinder 1 of the engine moves a piston in two parts, the movable head of the piston 23 a, carries a threaded central rod which screws into the skirt of the piston 23 b; two pins 22 a, and 22 b connect the piston skirt to a double connecting rod 19.
In the axis of the cylinder and between the two arms of the connecting rod 19, the central rod integral with the piston head 23 a, extends downwards and at this point has longitudinal grooves 24 in the form of gear teeth. .
A cross member 26 fixed to the cylinder 1 or to the housing serves as a support for a rack 4, the teeth of which mesh with the grooves 24.
The operation of the rack 4, which can be controlled automatically or directly by the means described above, will adjust the volumetric compression ratio of the engine by causing the screwing or unscrewing of the movable head 23 a, of the piston relative to the skirt 23 b.
In the examples of FIG. 6 the volumetric compression ratio adjuster is supported by a spring
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
with initial tension calibrated so as to act directly as regulator of the absolute effective pressure at the end of the compression.
In the cylinder head of a cylinder 1 fig. 6 is provided a cylindrical part 2 in which can slide an auxiliary piston 3. A spring 31 presses on the piston 3, and its relaxation is limited by the rod 32 and the stop 34 so as to keep the spring 31 a certain initial tension.
The combustion chamber V is designed to be very small, corresponding to the maximum volumetric compression ratio which is desired to be obtained when the engine operates at reduced intake.
If, after having suitably calibrated the spring 31, the admission is increased until the effective pressure at the end of compression reaches a determined maximum, the auxiliary piston 3, subjected to this pressure, causing the spring to bend, will move by so as to increase the volume of the combustion chamber to the extent necessary so that the optimum pressure is not exceeded.
This form of application of the invention therefore makes it possible to achieve the aim pursued, namely maintaining an absolute effective pressure at the end of constant compression despite variations in the filling rate.
In a manner similar to what has been explained above, it will be possible to dispense, in order to achieve this third form of application of the invention, to have recourse to an auxiliary cylinder and piston and to use the piston for this purpose. engine.
For this, there will be either between the two elements of a two-piece piston, or between the two elements of a two-piece connecting rod, a calibrated spring with initial tension as described above.
In these last two cases, provision should be made for dynamic balancing of the masses, the adjustment operations of which cause the displacement in order to prevent the setting of the res-
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
In the event of a change in engine speed, the output is influenced by the variation in inertia forces exerted on the reciprocating parts.
Due to the heavy work required of the spring, it is advantageous to use an air spring.
The examples shown in the drawings and the embodiments described above are given only by way of explanation and not by way of limitation of the invention. The various means described can be used separately or simultaneously.
