<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

method and devices for the manufacture of twist-free barbed wire using steel wire.
The barbed wire, of which the strand is made of steel wire, must be executed in such a way that it does not have twists, otherwise the steel wire s tend, due to their elasticity, to give a twist. to the strand after the $ stranding, and in addition the strand led or laid under torsional tension is recalcitrant and tends to form knots or twist. The invention relates to a method and devices for the manufacture of barbed wire steel wire, free of twist.
The method of the invention consists in wiring the steel wires on a wiring machine equipped with a device for backward rotation for the reels of the wiring baskets and shaping devices for the wires, and in arming, in the same process. work, therefore at the same time as the cabling and before winding the thread on the winding drum, the needle thread or egrets. By this wiring, even the steel wire
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
do not undergo rotation about their axis, because the reels or asple of the wiring baskets do not describe any relative rotation with respect to the surrounding space, as a result of their backward rotation, despite the continuous rotation of the wiring basket.
In addition, the elementary steel wires are, when passing through the shaping devices, already bent - before their combination into strand - in the hollow helical shape that they must take in the final strand or wire. or barb is made rationally before the point where the steel wires combine with each other. The barbed wire thus obtained is free from toret and is as easy to handle as a barbed wire made of soft iron wire. on the other hand, it presents vis-à-vis the latter the advantage of being able to be manufactured under diameters notably smaller s (with equal load), because of the greater resistance and the greater hardness of the steel compared to the soft iron; this advantage is reflected in a significant saving in weight.
A machine suitable for implementing this method is shown in fig.1 of the appended drawing. This machine is the combination of a cabling machine and a machine for manufacturing barbed wire. In the cabling basket 1 are mounted two asplesou reels 2 and 3, for steel wires 4 and 5, these arples being provided with a rearward rotation device.
The steel wires unwind from this reel and pass, in the direction of the wire gauge 8, through the shaping devices 6 and 7 fixed in the wire basket and each formed of three cylinders. This gauge of wiring has an opening, a passage larger than the double diameter of a steel wire. The steel wires are drawn through the gauge by the winding drum 9. 'Due to the large opening of the gauge 8, the steel wires 4 and 5 only come together, only braid in place. 10, beyond the caliber.
Between this point 10 and the wiring gauge is mounted a device II known in the ma-

chinesà make the barbed wire, to bring and cut the material forming the barbs or aigrettes, and which introduces the wires 12 and 13 forming the aigrette between the steel wires 4 and 5, in the still remaining intervals. The rotating fingers 15 provided in the hole in the turntable 14 between the wire gauge and the barb wire feeder, then wind a few times around the steel wires. The ends of the barb wire protruding between the barb wire. s wire 4 and 5 and thus close, at the same time, the braid, the cable at this point.
The control of the feed, cutting and winding device, for the wires 12 and 13, is carried out in the manner known in the machines for manufacturing barbed wire.
The method according to the invention can be modified in that the s barbs or tassels are introduced s only into the completely formed cabled yarn, before the latter is wound on the winding drum. It is then necessary to subsequently open the braided cable, in order to be able to introduce the barbs or crests between the wires or elements of the braid.
A machine suitable for carrying out this process is shown in fig. 2.
The machine again forms a combination of a cable, as previously described, and a special barbed wire machine, 16 here denotes the cable basket, with the two decoilers 17 and 18 for the s wire. 'steel 19 and 20, this reels comprising a rearward rotation device. 21 and 22 are the shaping devices of the steel wires, fixed in the cable basket. The steel wires are pulled by the winding drum 25 through the 24 gauge wire which here has an opening corresponding to the steel wires.

scale in figs. 3 and 4. It has rotating fingers 27 for unwinding beards, and is combined with devices 28 for feeding and cutting the wire forming the beard. internally, the spindle 26 contains a hollow cylindrical body 29, easily mounted to rotate with respect to the spindle, thanks to a presgian biled polier 30.
The torr free material is passed through this cylinder. At its end adjacent to the end of the pin 26 which carries the fingers 27, the cylinder 29 has a stud 31 which passes through it diametrically. At the opposite end, cylinder 29 is fitted with two stop pawls 52, as is usually provided in barbed wire machinery at the barb winding device.
The operation of the cylinder 29 can be seen with reference to FIG. 4, which shows the winding pin 26 and its inner body 29 partly in section. The pin 31 which passes through the hollow body 29 has the function of continuously opening the thread 25 which passes through the device, in order to be able to introduce between the elementary threads of the braid 25, through the advancement device 28 , the wires necessary for the formation of the barbs.
The cylinder 29, with its through spindle 31, can freely follow the stranding helix of the braid 25, during the operation of the machine, thanks to the fact that it is freely rotatably mounted in the spindle 26 during the formation of the beard itself, the inverted body 29 is held, by means of the pawls 32, by a special stop device controlled by the front shaft of the machine, and this locking takes place in a position such that the forced opening. born in the braid before the location of the location takes in the machine the position required for the introduction of the bar @ e tar the device for feeding this wire.
After the beard has been ingested at the desired spacings and has been cut to length by the known cutting device, the cylindrical body 29 of the. pin 26 is again released, so that the opening formed in the braid 25 by the pin 31, closes automatically.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
As an alternative embodiment of the inner body 29 of the barb winding spindle, it is possible, instead of the diametrical spindle 31, to provide in the body 29 a disc-shaped body having the separate steel wire guides. elementary elements of the braid 25. This variant is shown in fig.5. Here, 29 again denotes the internal cylindrical body of the spindle 26. 33 is the disc inserted in the body 29, and provided with holes 34 and 35, made in the shape of a funnel to obtain a better introduction of the steel wire. The disc 33 is preferably removably mounted, so that it can be replaced if necessary.
