<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Mechanical reverse rectifier.
Reverse rectifiers are already known which operate on the principle of current chopping by means of mechanical contactors and for this purpose using a rotary current switch as contactors.
The present invention relates to similar arrangements and consists in that the relative current switch mentioned is employed at the same time as a switch for the motor which operates it. This not only results in a very notable constructive simplification but also
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Further, as the circuits of the motor controlled by the switch are in series with the use circuit, the number of revolutions of the motor automatically adapts to the inductive load of the use circuit at each instant.
For obtaining an optimum effect, it has been found advantageous to give the rotary current switch a particular shape and according to the present invention, the insulating segments of this current switch have an unusual width and are preferably even about as wide as the contact segments. In this way we already obtain at first glance that the current curve approaches to a certain extent the sinusoidal shape and we obtain a consequently stronger tendency towards the automatic tuning of the number of revolutions of the motor on the natural frequency of the system electric.
Not every engine will work without special measures with a switch that fulfills the condition mentioned last. Motors in which the systems movable with respect to each other (field, armature) are both made of soft iron but in which only one of these systems carries a winding, have proved to be the most advantageous.
If this winding is mounted in series with a current switch of the kind described above, actuated by the armature itself, so that its circuit is closed or opened periodically with about 90 phase shift with respect to when the iron magnetic circuit closes under the action of the armature, this armature is attracted each time by jerks in the field which is interrupted a little before obtaining the optimum magnetic position to continue the operation of the armature under the effect of its inertial force until it receives a new control impulse, in the same direction of rotation.

A reverse rectifier equipped in this way is shown in fig, 1 in side view and in fig.
2 in plan, In the field of the electromagnet 3 provided with pole pieces 1 and 2 is arranged so as to be able to rotate around the axis 5 a Z-shaped armature 4, free of winding, also made of soft iron, On this axis is mounted at the same time the rotary current switch 6 on which the balances 7 and 8 rub.
Winding 3 is mounted directly in the circuit of switch 6-8. If a current source is applied to terminals 9, the armature 4 is drawn into the field between the pole pieces 1 and 2; then cuts this field by means of the current switch 6-8 and rotates, by the inertia obtained by nearly 90, to switch the field back on and thus receive a new control pulse in the same direction of rotation. 16 is a flywheel with fins in the air.
When then the armature 4 of the motor is not in the position shown in the drawing but in a position perpendicular to it, the conductive connection between the brushes 7 and 8 is cut. In this case, the engine cannot start by itself. To make it possible to start the engine from any position, an auxiliary magnetic field has been provided according to the present invention which brings the armature of the engine to the starting position. In the exemplary embodiment shown, a separate auxiliary armature 17 has been placed on the shaft 5 of the main armature, advantageously in the form of a Z, which rotates in the field of the electromagnet 18, 19.
Field winding 19 is connected to current source 9 in parallel with the entire reverse rectifier device.
In series with the field coil 3 and the switch 6-8 is mounted the primary winding of the transformer 11 which can be wound as well as a step-up transformer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
only as a reduction transformer and at the terminals 12 of which the secondary voltage is collected. To reduce the formation of sparks at switch 6-8, a capacitor 13 has been mounted in parallel with the latter, which is completed by resistor 14 to form a phase shifter. This phase shifter is advantageously connected with respect to the natural frequency of the entire system so that a phase shift of 90 between the current and the voltage occurs for this frequency. The extra-currents are then almost completely extinguished.
A particular advantage obtained when using the special motor described with the aid of the drawing is that the closed nature of its magnetic circuit and therefore the inductivity of its coil 3 undergo a periodic variation by the movements of the armature 4, variation which already produces as such in the transformer current variations which are phase-shifted with respect to the pure action of the switch, are superimposed on the latter and, in particular when the armature has a Z shape according to the f ig. 1, help to bring the current curve closer to the sinusoidal shape.
This effect can be further increased, according to the present invention, by the fact that the yoke of the motor is used as the core of the transformer; it suffices for this purpose to give the field winding dimensions such that it is capable of absorbing the full voltage of the network and then for example placing the secondary winding above it. This gives a very simple unit, of extremely small size and advantageous operation.
Finally, it is possible, for example for the operation of illuminating tubes, to use the field winding 3 itself as an auto-transformer and to take the secondary voltage directly in parallel on the brushes 7,8. The most favorable conditions are then obtained when, before the consumer (lighting tube), we mount
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of a bridge formed by a resistance for example 1000 ohms).
Fig. 3 shows an exemplary embodiment of the use of the field winding simultaneously as the transformer winding. The coils 20 and 21 of the field winding then serve at the same time as the primary winding and the coils 22 and 23 as the secondary winding of the transformer. Current switch 6 is mounted between coils 2.0 and 21 and in series with these coils.
It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to the use of the engine described last or of the assembly indicated. On the contrary, the advantages mentioned at the beginning are always obtained directly when the switch of a somewhat suitable motor is used as a current switch for a reverse rectifier. Claims.
