Fig.7 en est un détail.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

UNIVERSAL CHUCK FOR DRILLING AND TAPPING
The present invention relates to a universal mandrel particularly suitable for tapping a rotating part after having pierced it, without removing the part from the machine.
This operation very often requires in the work on parallel lathes and, now, it is accomplished by using a tap caught in a mandrel, or hand vise.
The operation is affected by many drawbacks, because the cylindrical taps are not tightened by the claws of the chuck, and they slip and bite; those with square shanks cannot be well grasped and centered between the two or three claws of the chuck.
It follows an irrational work of oblique tapping etc.
-., The device of the invention is a mandrel with four self-locking claws, which can be mounted on a machine or = tils, for example a lathe, and which can enter between its grif = fes a cylindrical drill bit to be drilled, after drilling, is rsmpla =

Cée by a tap usually square shank.
This tap penetrates into the hole in which advances forming the thread, up to the planned depth, after which it automatically releases and turns with the piece to be tapped in further advancing.
This device therefore allows tapping with great precision, and it is also provided with an adjustable friction which gives an automatic release if the torsional force is exaggerated, which ensures the integrity of the taps and of the mandrel itself. .
The mandrel is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which show, by way of non-limiting example, one form of construction.

Fig. 7 is a detail.
This mandrel includes a hollow body -1- provided with a -1'- cylindrical or conical shank, to mount it on the machine (lathe, drilling machine, etc.) and with a knock -1 -, to safely prevent its rotation. In the cavity of this body is arranged a cykn- dre -2- with claw head -2'- and friction sleeve -3- which can be tightened more or less using a screw -2 -.
Between the wings of the head -2 -'- which form with the cover = key -5- a square chamber, are arranged four claws -4-4 -4'-4 "- affecting the form of prisms, moving cha = along a wall of the square chamber and pushing each other without play, so that it suffices to move one of them for the others to accomplish the same movement. Consequently, by maneuvering the claw -4- by means of the screw -6-, in fact increase or decrease the size of the square space which forms the center of the claws, and which preserves
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
its shape. This operation is as precise as that of the iris diaphragms of photographic objectives, and it makes it possible to clamp a part or a tool with sufficient force.
The sleeve -3- is retained by a key -7 which engages in a groove -3'- and which is mounted in a slide -8- movable along a slide -1 "-, hollowed out in a wall of the body. -. This slider can be locked in the chosen position by means of a clamping plate -8'- and a nut -8 "-. The key -7- is mounted in this slide by means of a tail -7'- of a spring -9- and an axterne handle -10-. The body of the slide has crenellations -8 - on the outside which allow the handle -10- to be fixed, and consequently = this key -7-, at three different heights.
The groove -3 -'- opens into a groove -3 "- somewhat deeper than the groove -3- / At the intersection of the groove = re and the groove is placed a ratchet -11- which allows the pitch = wise of the key in only one direction of rotation.
The key -7- is longer than the width of the groove -3 "-but it ends with a cleat -7" -, having the same width as the groove, so that if the key -7- is in position mi = raised, it can engage in the groove and let the sleeve -3- with the body -2- rotate freely, in a straight direction, while by the presence of the pawl -il-, it always prevents it rotation in the left direction (or vice versa, depending on the pawl arrangement).
The central part of the body -2- is occupied by a conical part - 12-, with a drive notch -12 '-, to engage the tool drive tooth there.
This part -12- can be driven out by an expeller -13- with rebound spring -13'-
The operation of this tool is as follows: suppose we have to drill and tap a hole on a part mounted on a parallel lathe.
The mandrel is mounted in place of the tailstock. The bit to be drilled is caught between the claws of the chuck.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
If it is of the conical shank type one must first of all cnas = tighten the part -12-. For this, the key -7- is pulled to its highest position, in which it completely disengages from the sleeve -3- which can be taken away. A small knock on the expeller -13- is enough to eject the part -12-.
The sleeve-3- put back in place, we bring the slide -8- to the left position, and the key -7- to the lowest position. The cleat -7 "- engages in the groove -3" - to prevent axial displacement of the sleeve, and the body -7- of the key engages in the groove -3 '-, to prevent rotation.
Under these conditions, the hole can easily be drilled by advancing the tip holder screw.
Executed the hole, we release and we expel the bit which is replaced by a tap.
The key -7- is placed halfway up so that the cleat -7'- alone is engaged in the groove.
Using a graduation engraved next to the groove -1'- we place the slide -8- in the position which marks the length of tapping, then we push the tool against the piece to tap = der. As soon as it engages, the tap moves forward, pulling the cylinder -2- and the sleeve -3- with it, which can move forward but not rotate, retained by the key -7-.
If, all the same, it happens that the rotating part exerts an exaggerated force on the mandrel, the friction between the furnace = reau and the cylinder is overcome, and the latter is driven in rotation.
In normal case, the tap advances to the planned depth; at this time, the key -7- opens into the groove. and the cylinder -2- with the sleeve is driven freely in rotation.
It suffices to reverse the rotation of the workpiece to disengage the tap.
It is clear that, when the key emerges in the groove, there is a running-in of the sharp edges of the contrasting parts, which compromises the precision of the tool,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
This inconvenience is avoided by provision l118.V. or we see a second pawl -15- disposed in the unclogging position. Until this, the key and the ratchet contras = tent by flat surfaces. At the instant of unblocking, * the pawl is pushed back without any effort, which avoids any break-in. It goes without saying that, instead of a tap, a die holder can be mounted on the mandrel to thread parts of these males instead of tapping the holes.
