<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

for: Pneumatic tire with large tread surface and low volume for use on railway tracks.
The conditions of use of tires on railways are very different from the conditions of use of tires on the road. On the one hand, the crushing of the tire is subject to fewer variations because the surface on which it rolled is more even. On the other hand, this crushing, in the event of deflation, must be automatically limited otherwise disturbances may occur @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
dangerous in the seat and in guiding the vehicle.
The subject of the present invention is a pneumatic tire specially designed for these particular conditions. It is characterized by the combination of a chamber of flattened section with a rim with a flat or slightly concave, or even convex, base, this convexity being able to be obtained by the addition of one or more linings forming an extra thickness, this chamber which contains a very small volume of air which can thus, in the event of deflation, completely collapse without the wheel collapsing by more than ten millimeters, which allows it to continue to travel on the rail in conditions compatible with the safety of passengers and equipment.
Thanks to this arrangement, there is therefore no need to add an internal safety device to the wheel, and thus a serious mechanical complication is avoided,
The envelope naturally has a shape compatible with the glue that the chambra must have when it is put in place and inflated.
Provision is also made for the addition to the tire of an air reserve, external to the air chamber and which may be contained in a receptacle fixed to the wheel or forming part of it, this receptacle carrying a pressure valve. inflation and communicating with the interior of said chamber. The purpose of this reserve is to prevent minimal air loss from causing the tire to flatten too quickly and also to increase the total volume of pressurized air, h

The description which will follow, with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented.
Figures 1 to 6 show in cross section (partial in the case of Figures 4 and 5) a combined tire and rim produced in accordance with the invention.
In the embodiment of the invention represented in FIG. 1, the inner tube 1 rests on the rim 2 which is supposed to be of the flat base type, by means of linings 3 of any number and of suitable material. These linings form extra thickness and wedge the beads of the casing 4. The shape that the latter take under the load is indicated by the lines 41 in phantom lines, The casing 4, the rods of which have been shown at 5 is retained on the rim 2 by the usual means, for example by the fixed rim 6 and the removable ring 61. The air chamber 1 can be connected to an air reserve contained in a capacity 7 which communicates with the interior of this chamber through channel 8 and carries valve 9.
The guide flange 10 of the wheel can, as shown in FIG. 2, hearth formed by an extension of the rim 2 or be connected to the latter or to the web of the wheel in any other way.
Fig. 3 shows another embodiment of the invention in which the air chamber 1 laterally carries solid nozzles 11,11 which are interposed between the rim 2 and the casing 4; the latter is fixed @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
by the usual edges 6,61 and its profile is such that the air pressure in the chamber produces the automatic locking of the beads 12,12 in their housing. This arrangement eliminates the trim 3.
The end pieces 11 may, by way of a variant, be constituted by rings, continas or fragmented, independent of the chamber 1 (fig 4).
The envelope 4 can also be made in the way which is indicated in FIG. 5. The beads 12 are extended at 121 to the rim 2 and ensure the locking of the casing against the edges 6,61 by the inflated chamber 1.
Finally, FIG. 6 gives a final example in which the lining 3 has a rectangular section having the effect of increasing the protrusion of the tire without increasing the volume of the chamber.
It goes without saying that various modifications of detail could be made to the tire and to the wheel which have just been described without thereby departing from the scope of the invention.
