<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Fig. 2 en est une vue de côté, et
Fig. 3 est un schéma des connexions.

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
(1) la longueur des antennes e (= #)
2 (2) le parcours autour de chaque section ellip- tique du cylindre et par ses foyers (=#); (3) la distance de l'écran réfléchissant , (= un multiple de 1 );

Improvements in the propagation of radio waves.
The present invention relates to the radiation or reception of radio waves and is particularly applicable to systems according to British patent no. 256,786. The main object of the invention is to increase the purity and efficiency of beam radiation by a fundamental wave beam emitter.
Harmonics in wireless transmission antennas are generally avoided as much as possible because they interfere with reception over a wide range.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
scale of frequencies, that they radiate energy according to the square of their frequencies and that they interfere with each other by interference.
According to the present invention, these drawbacks can be eliminated.
The invention consists of an arrangement capable of concentrating the electromagnetic waves into a beam or its equivalent, in which a radiating antenna is surrounded by a reflecting envelope such that the fundamental wave circulates, is reflected and is reamed. born to this antenna in unison with the new radiations of the latter and in which measures are taken to prevent the harmonic radiations of this antenna from leaving the envelope.
According to another characteristic of the present invention, capacitive surfaces are connected to the harmonic potential nodes of the enveloped antenna.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the odd harmonic frequencies of the energy radiated in the envelope by the antenna are transformed into the fundamental frequency of the energy radiated by the envelope of this antenna.
According to another characteristic of the present invention, the even harmonic frequencies of the energy radiated by the antenna inside the envelope are transformed into an even sub-multiple frequency of the energy radiated by the envelope. of the wrapped antenna.
According to another characteristic of the invention, one combines with any of the above characteristics an electromagnetic wave concentration system according to English Patent no. 256,786.

The invention also consists in the arrangement more particularly described below with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In these drawings, which schematically represent the invention by an exemplary embodiment in its application to the device described in British patent no. 256,786:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the improved device,
Fig. 2 is a side view, and
Fig. 3 is a circuit diagram.
In this embodiment, an impregnated wooden frame (not shown in the drawings) is used which supports an appropriate number of insulated busbars a, for example 64, each of which is 2.5 in length. meters (=), these bars being placed according to the ge-
2 nératrices of a cylinder or the moats of a barrel, whose cross section perpendicular to these bars is an ellipse with a major axis of 2.5 meters in length and an inter-focal distance of 1.25 m. (=), leaving a space of 0.625 m. (=) between each focus and the top
8 of the ellipse which is closest to it. This particular degree of eccentricity is recommendable, but by no means essential.
The oval cylinder formed by the conductive bars a is surrounded on the outside by a metal screen b made up, for ease of inspection, of a network or lattice of metal wires; this screen avoids the effects of the external capacitor which are prejudicial to very short waves, but it is by no means essential.
Sufficient space is left between the cylinder and the screen to allow the installation of a pair of oscillating valves.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tes c and circuits, which are arranged between the cylinder and the screen, preferably at the tops of the elliptical cylinder, while the conductors are connected to the screen by means of capacitors of large capacity d (Fig. 3) .
Additional metal screens b1 protect the oscillating valves c and their circuits.
Each of the two antennas e arranged at the foci of the ellipse comprises two parallel bars of copper or other metal, e1, e2 having a length of 2.50 meters (= #) and juxtaposed without touching each other; Moon
2 of the bars of each pair, for example e2, is interrupted in the middle at e and between the two ends thus produced are connected in series three small variable capacitors f1, f2, f3 mounted on a board f, loops "pick- up "g being mounted between the second capacitor and the first and between the second capacitor and the third. The length of each loop is equal to half the length of the interrupted bar a2 of the antenna, plus the length of the connecting wire between this bar of the antenna. and the first or the third capacitor.
Each valve circuit is provided with a finely graduated capacitor h connected between the grid and the valve plate.
The device is arranged in such a way as to allow continuous variations of the electrical and magnetic coupling tight between the loops g and the valve circuit i. For this purpose, only the parts des'boucles which are turned towards the valve circuit i must be movable relative to the latter.
If desired, it is possible to use only one antenna / antenna arranged on one of the focal lines following the

Beyond the rear end of the elliptical cylinder is fixed a metal screen 1, the center of which is in the axis of the cylinder and the plane of which is perpendicular to this axis. The distance from this screen to the center of the cylinder is any multiple of ±, that is, 1.25,2.50, 3.75 meters, etc. This screen reflects the beam directed back through the cylinder, so. re to reinforce in the suitable phase the beam directed forward.
The relative speed of these forward and backward beams is 2v (i.e. double the speed of light), so that a screen displacement of
4 causing a delay of 9 in the rear beam, causing a slowing in space of .2v = / \ relative to the front beam.
Short-circuiting blocks k are placed between the interrupted bar e2 and the continuous bar e1 of the antennas e in two nodes of 5e. harmonic potential on either side of the middle of the antennas. At one of the 15th potential nodes. harmonic to one side of the middle, and to one of the 3rd potential nodes. harmonic on the other side of the middle of each antenna are established discs 11,12 which constitute capacitive surfaces. These surfaces can also be placed in the middle of the unbroken bar e1 and at the 17th. harmonic as indicated in 15 and 14 respectively, 14 being connected only to the continuous bar e1.
According to this arrangement, the fixed elements determining the natural wavelength of the system are as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
(1) the length of the antennas e (= #)
2 (2) the path around each elliptical section of the cylinder and through its foci (= #); (3) the distance from the reflective screen, (= a multiple of 1);
4 (4) the harmonic intervals imposed by the disks and the short-circuiting blocks.
The following variable elements allow the tuning to be varied: (a) the capacitor h in the valve circuit 1 between the gate and the anode (b) the three small variable capacitors f1, $ f2, $ f3.
(c) the variable coupling between the pick-up buckles g and the valve circuit i.
For operation, these variable elements are set so as to produce the maximum field strength in the plane of the main axis of the cylinder and it has been found that at a remote receiving station set for a wavelength = # , one obtains according to the present invention a fundamental radiation much more energetic than can be obtained according to the English patent n. 256,786; furthermore, there is no trace of harmonic radiation.
On the contrary, the introduction of harmonics on an ordinary antenna, or rather the difficulty of being able to eliminate them entirely, has the well-known effect of considerably reducing the intensity of the signals received on the fundamental wave, while each harmonic can be received at a distance, causing the interference which the radio transmission legislation seeks to combat especially in all countries.
