"Joint Universel"
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La fig. 3 est une coupe suivant la ligne 3-3 de la fig. I ;
La fig. 5 est une coupe suivant le ligne 5-5 de la figure I ;

"Universal Joint"
The invention relates to universal joints, salts; its main objective is to achieve an extremely flexible structure to assemble the ends of neighboring shafts so that these shafts transmit a rotational movement from one to the other and, at the same time, can be used individually when changing their angle ratio.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the kind, of inexpensive manufacture, composed of a series of double elements which thus form a flexible assembly between the shafts.
Another objective of the invention is to produce an assembly of the species capable of being easily sheathed.
Finally, yet another objective of the invention is to provide a device in which the forces caused by the angular displacement of the shafts with respect to one another are reduced to a minimum.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
These and other objectives are achieved by the construction method shown in the accompanying drawings, where for the purpose of representation, a preferred method has been shown.
Fig. I is a longitudinal section through a universal joint according to the invention.
The gig. :: is a combined side elevation view of the parts of the universal joint, separated, showing the angular displacement of the ribs of the various sections
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. I;
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view, part in section of a terminal element.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Figure I;
Fig. 6 is a bottom view of one of the disc-like elements.
Fig. 7 is a section taken on line 7-7 of figure 6.
Fig. 8 is a plan view; from below of a disc-like element showing in dotted lines the relative positions of the ribs of this element and those of the other elements.
In the drawings, 10 generally designates; a sheath, the end of which is designed as a concave sleeve II in which is seated a terminal joint element I @ serving to assemble the movable shaft of the shafts to be assembled.
This element is in the form of a sphere with a neck 13 intended to pass through the end of the sheath and designed as at 14 for verdi ± engage it with the movable shaft 15 which may be for example; the motor shaft of an automobile.
Element 12 has a notch on its inner face as at 16 so as to form a vertical rib 17. the notches 16 have bases curved along an arc of lesser curvature than that of the sphere forming the end piece 12 and in the same general direction as the curvature.

bure of that part of the sphere which serves to form the rib 17. The opposite end of the sheath carries a terminal element 18 of the seal, preferably hemispherical and bearing on its outer face a neck 19 as in 20 which comes in engagement with a fixed or motor shaft 21. The engagement of this neck in the opening 22 of the end of the sheath that it passes through is such that the element 18 and its neck cannot move angularly with respect to to the sheath.
The inner face of element 18 forms a complement to the inner face of element 12; it is cut with a groove 23 to admit a rib similar to the rib 17; it is curved overall to match the curvature of the bases of the notches 16 as indicated at 24. * 1, the bore 25 of the sheath 10 is a rounded body, the diameter of which is straight from the ends to the middle part.
Arranged between the end elements 12 and 18 are a series of disc-like elements 26, each of which has a face 27 similar to the inner face of the element 12 and forming a complement to the inner face of the element 18; the opposite face 28 is similar to the inner face of the element 18 and forms a complement to the outer face of the element 12. It is obvious that the faces of the discs :: 6 named in the first place forming a complement to the Element 18, they will also complement faces 28 of the other disaues so that the order in which the disks are in the sheath is irrelevant.
The groove 29 moves at an angle relative to the ribs 30 and a sufficient number of discs must be used between the elements 12 and 18 so that the gap between the groove 23 of the terminal element 18 and the rib 17 of element 12 is at least 45 degrees.
It is clear that if only one of the discs were used and if its rib 30 formed a right angle with the groove 9, at a certain point of rotation of the motor shaft 21, a force would be transmitted to it.
