Abstract
In the described air purification method, the particles in an air stream are electrically charged by the corona effect on needle-shaped electrodes. Due to the specific shape and distance between these electrodes, a negative and a more powerful corona can be formed than with known methods, without excessive ozone production. The charged particles are collected by a self-supporting electret, which reduces the risk of filter breakage. As a result, higher air velocities can be applied than with traditional electro-filtration, so that a device using the method can be of compact design. This entire process takes place in a magnetic field, generated by a permanent magnet, which traps magnetic particles from the air and makes the process more efficient.

The present invention relates to an air purification method and device therefor.
The object of the present invention is to offer a compact air purification method that can purify large air flows with good efficiency, with a low pressure drop or internal resistance and with a low risk of filter breakage.
The invention also relates to an apparatus for applying the described method.
Traditional mechanical filters offer a high resistance to the air flow, so that the fan that has to move the air through the filter must have a large capacity. These filters also offer.
Daarbij is bij een grote bevuiling en bij hoge luchtsnelheden het risico op filterbreuk groot bij mechanische, niet zelfdragende filters.as they filter finer and / or become more polluted, more and more resistance to the air flow, so that they absorb more and more energy / power. In addition, with high soiling and at high air speeds, the risk of filter breakage is high with mechanical, non-self-supporting filters.
Traditional electrostatic air purification systems use electricity to purify air, this is electrofiltration. The air is usually charged with a single electrode (wire, needle, ...) under positive voltage (WO 01/28692), traditionally between + 3,000 V and + 20,000 V (WO 97/23294) and captured on a grounded collector surface. Higher voltages and / or negative voltages on the electrode would contribute to a higher air purification efficiency, but are not desirable because of excessive ozone production. The air flow must therefore remain in contact with the electrode for long enough to be sufficiently charged. Electrofiltration of the air therefore requires low air speeds (<1 m / s) to work efficiently. As a result, these devices quickly have large dimensions for a limited purification capacity. Due to these specific design requirements, traditional systems for electrofiltration are difficult to integrate into existing ventilation systems. In addition, some particles are difficult to charge electrically, such as, for example, stainless steel particles (US6632267). The particles are collected on a collecting surface. A method for making particle capture more efficient is to provide the collecting surface with an opposite charge (US 6656248). However, this requires 2 high voltage generators, making the method expensive and bombastic. These collector surfaces can be cleaned mechanically and / or chemically (US 6,632,267). However, highly adherent dirt creates the necessary problems here and makes the chemical maintenance insufficient or the mechanical maintenance very intensive.
In summary, the technical problem is to develop an air purification method that combines the following properties: a low pressure drop, compact, large capacity, high efficiency, low risk of filter breakage at high air speeds and the lowest possible ozone production.
In the method described, the particles (solid or liquid) in the air stream are electrically charged by a negative, powerful corona on a series of needle-shaped electrodes and are collected by a fixed, self-supporting, mechanical filter whose fibers are electrostatically charged (a self-supporting or fixed electrode). This entire process takes place in a magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet, so that magnetic particles are better captured from the air and the entire process runs more efficiently.
The device that uses the described method is preferably tubular, so that it can easily be integrated into existing ventilation systems. The device can also be used independently.

In the method described, the corona effect is used to generate negative ions. Charging the particles is done in such a way that, with as little energy as possible, the particles are charged as efficiently as possible. This is done by using multiple needle-shaped electrodes that are placed on a longitudinal support. Due to the specific shape and distance between these electrodes, a negative and more powerful corona can be formed than with known methods, with an ozone production that remains far below the standard of 0.050 ppm. The needles are supplied with a high negative voltage (- 20,000 V to - 30,000 V). This creates negative ions in the air. The created negative ions charge the particles in the air stream that flows through the device. After this "loading step", the particles are collected in a self-supporting electret. Since the particles are electrically charged in the charging step, the self-supporting electret is more efficient in collecting the particles than it is for non-charged particles. Due to its rigidity, this electret can handle higher air velocities than a non-self-supporting mechanical filter, with no risk of filter leakage, and it only generates a minimum pressure drop. in larger air volumes.
In this method, a final purification step can be integrated through an active carbon filter to also remove gases and odors.
Periodically the self-supporting electrode and the optional active carbon filter can easily be replaced.
The arrow (6) indicates the direction of the air flow created by the axial fan (5) or another device therefor. The metal frame (1) of the device is grounded. The air is drawn into the device through the inlet (7). In the air stream, negative ions are created by a series of needle-shaped electrodes (8) arranged on a longitudinal support (2). The needles are arranged in such a way that with a minimum of needles a maximum of negative ions can be generated. Typically, a number of wreaths are provided with 6 needles, the tip of the needles pointing towards the metal frame of the device (1), which is grounded. The distance between the tip of the needle and the outside of the device (1) cannot be more than 150 mm. The negative ions that are created in the air stream (6) charge the particles in the air stream. These particles are then captured on the self-supporting electrode (3). Behind the electret there is a permanent magnet (4) with a magnetic field strength of> 1 Tesla. The permanent magnet (4) increases the efficiency of the entire process by attracting and capturing metal particles from the air stream. The electrode (3) and the permanent magnet (4) can easily be replaced periodically. The air stream leaves the device through the outlet (9).
Due to the tubular shape, the device is very easy to install in existing ventilation systems by using standard components.
It is obvious to one skilled in the art that the described method of air purification and the apparatus therefor is not limited to the example described above, but that they are based on the following claims.
